Hey folks,

After months of backorder, Lemo have finally started to deliver connectors! First and foremost that means that the APU-IDX and APU-AB are back in stock!

If you've been dying to get one, now's the time. We have a limited stock of connectors and while we have tons more on the way, distributors are doling them out in batches.

While we've been waiting for connectors we've been finishing up the entire APU [Auxiliary Power Unit] line of products:

Battery Plates

APU-IDX V-Mount and IDX battery plate
APU-AB Anton Bauer battery plate

Cable Lengths

6" [ideal for direct body mount, RED Backpack and RED Module Adapter]
14" [ideal for RED Gunner, Clutch and iris rod mounts]
6' [ideal for belt clip and specialty rigs]

Interface Adapters

Bolt-through Interface Adapter
Interface Adapter for RED Module Adapter & Modules
Interface Adapter for RED Backpack
Belt Clip
Shifter Plate for Anton Bauer

Power Distribution

P-Tap to USB Converter
Something new coming soon…

So, mounting the APU... here's the way that you're used to:

We always set out to make our APU the complete industry-standard power solution for the Epic and Scarlet. This is how it works.

First, the Shifter Plate for Anton Bauer

Some of the largest Anton Bauer batteries [namely the super-beefy Hytron 140] are wide enough to interfere with the removal of the SSD from the Epic. Since the Epic is so narrow and the Hytron is so wide, the battery plate must be shifted off of the camera's centerline to eliminate this interference.

Some Anton Bauer batteries also extend below the bottom of the battery plate. In most configurations this is normal, but with some shoulder pads there can be interference. Trevor Meeks describes one example in this thread.

The Shifter Plate moves the Anton Bauer battery plate to a slightly higher mounting point just to the right of the camera's centerline. This eliminates Hytron 140 interference with the Epic SSDs and prevents Anton Bauer batteries from extending below the bottom of the AB mount.

We made this for a few customers who wanted to move their battery plate and decided to make it available publicly. It's a specialty product for very specific circumstances so don't worry - if you don't think you need it, you don't need it.

Next, the Interface Adapters

Interface Adapters are the APU's way of quickly connecting to things other than the back of the camera body. They are exactly the same for the APU-IDX and APU-AB. The first is the Bolt-through Interface Adapter.

As it stands, the APU has five 1/4-20 tapped holes on it for accessory mounting. The Bolt-Through adapter lets you attach the APU to anything you can screw a 1/4-20 into.

For many people, this will be the ideal way to mount the APU to either an iris rod bracket or to RED's Gunner or Clutch. Here's a look at bolting the APU to some FMJ-Sidearms.

First, screw the Interface Adapter to your intended surface. Here it is attached via 2x 1/4-20 bolts.

Next, snap on the APU just like you would as though it were the back of the camera!

The cables have been removed from this rendering.

Remember, you can bolt this Interface Adapter to anything that you can screw a 1/4-20 into. This is going to be the most dynamic and low-cost solution for changing quickly between multiple configurations with the same battery plate.

Next, the Interface Adapter for RED Backpack

This adapter lets you use the APU with RED's Backpack accessory platform. You simply snap the APU onto the Interface Adapter and slide it into the backpack.

We also added through-holes to lock the Interface Adapter to the APU if you want to make it a more semi-permanent solution.

Here's an exploded view, I'll let the pictures speak for themselves.

Next, the Interface Adapter for RED Module Adapter & Modules

module1.jpg

module2.jpg

This adapter lets you mount the APU on the back of RED's Module Adapter or on any module with RED's interface on the rear. To date, every single module that we have seen from RED [either as products or renderings] has the module interface on the back.

To use, simply snap the APU onto the Interface Adapter and mount the APU just like you would mount a module. Sean Brown and Tim Whitcomb made a great video showing how RED's module interface functions.

Here's an exploded view to see how it all pieces together:

This Interface Adapter is the most valuable in my mind... particularly because it will enable the eventual execution of the way that I've always envisioned the Epic looking in a cinema environment:

loooooong.jpg

[cable removed from rendering]

That's a placeholder in the shape and size of the most recent Pro IO Module we've seen from RED. When the rest of the "camera body" is attached with an APU on the back, you can start to see how the Epic will eventually be able to take on the shape of more traditional cinema cameras. It looks a little peculiar today but trust me... when you see how it's going to look when all is said and done, it's going to be a very familiar shape to a lot of folks in the film industry. Gotta love the modularity of Epic...

The fourth Interface Adapter is the Belt Clip. I don't have a rendering tonight since I'm still experimenting with different belt clip shapes, but the concept is the same as every other Interface Adapter. Simply snap the APU onto the belt clip and you're in business. The 6' cable completes the package.

As you already know, both the APU-IDX and APU-AB have a single P-Tap power output. To enable charging your REDmote while the APU is installed on the back of a camera, we introduced the P-Tap to USB Converter. This converter also works perfectly to charge your iPhone right from the camera.

The P-Tap to USB converter is in stock and shipping now.

We have another trick for the APU up our sleeve... a BIG one. I'll leave it at that for now, but it's something I've been needing since day one.

I'll come back tomorrow and update prices, links, and production details. It turns out that knocking out renderings takes a long time and we're exhausted!

As usual, stay tuned... I hope you guys like it!

6" Cable - $100
14" Cable - $110
6' Cable - $120

Cable length will be selectable upon checkout in the next few days for those who are placing an initial APU order.

We're ordering stock and finishing up details for the interface adapters, we should have numbers by the end of the week. Then we just have to snap a few pictures and pop them in the store!

Niiiiice, Brook. Thanks man! Looking forward to that bolt-through adapter and a 14" cord for use with THE CLUTCH. Thanks for the mention as well.

Now get some sleep!

Brook, Brook, Brook... how long do you think you're going to last on RED FORUM selling these things... they getting too good, and you deliver so quickly...

These V lock power options are fantastic, between you and Woodern Camera, REDs accessories manufacturing side must be grinding there teeth wondering how you two do it so quickly. NOT knocking the quality of RED's products one little bit as most of my accessories are RED parts anyway... but then again, I have a lot of yours too.

Keep up the great work Brook... It's good to see you doing so well.

Would it ever be possible to get rid op the power cable, and power the epic through the module connector pins, that would be even nicer, less cables, less hassle :) If brook isn't allowed to make is, it would be great thing for red to make :)

Wow, amazing products. My amex card is staring at me now...

Awesome concepts Brook! It's always easy to say after they have been announced, but I was thinking about getting you on to the belt clip adapter and a "mount wherever" adapter idea. Great to know they will be coming. Now i have to get 700+ a couple hundred more $ to get the idx apu plus batteries.... Sigh! :)

Keep on rocking. Really curious what will be next!

Way to go Brook and VF. I love it when a new product release is just the tip of the iceberg. All of these adapters and modules increase the value of the APU exponentially. Thank you!

I ordered Friday night :-)

Been waiting for this with GREAT anticipation after getting to borrow one for a shoot in January. It was the most perfect piece of kit I could have hoped for and was a great addition to the camera.

Now I hope it gets here in about a week as I have a shoot up north I REALLY want this to be in my kit and ready to shoot!!

Some very interesting new products! It's great to now have the option of mounting a battery to the side of the brain.

Thanks! Showing the plate on the side of the camera was just as a placeholder since I didn't have a Clutch, Gunner or iris rod bracket handy to show some other configurations. I'll take pictures of a lot of different placement options in the next week or two depending on what parts I can get my hands on.

While that's certainly the holy grail of power input to the camera, that connector is for RED only. :)

Very impressive renderings, are these from within Solidworks? If Solidworks can do this, I may give up on Inventor. Having to use 3DS Max to get decent renderings is pretty annoying.

Curt's pretty freakin' good, eh? I'll let him post the details.

Awesome, Scott! Glad to hear you finally have one on the way.

Hey Brook, do you know when you might start selling the bolt-through APU interface adapter, and how much it might be?

Brook, i'm glad i found this thread.

The AB APU looks awesome, finally, i don't have to mount of 19mm rails. is it possible to drop by the office and pick one up?
