Hi All,

Just curious about whether scarlet will be able to shoot single still frames when it arrives. In addition to motion work I've been working as a commercial still shooter for many years and being able to shoot individual frames right off the bat would be nice. Somehow I suspect this has not been implemented yet. Can anyone confirm this?

Nope.
I actually would like if they made the record button on the side handle a snapshot button. Nice to do screen grabs at different exposures etc and it feels like the natural place for a still button. same as the canons slr's etc.

what was that all talking (by RED) about having Epic going in stills mode ??? like a year ago ...

it is not there??????

I was under the impression that the slide switch on the side handle would change the trigger button to stills from motion, The version of the Manual that I have said it was currently not functional but since I don't have the camera yet I have no way to confirm this. Guess it will be a bit of a challenge to bracket shots until this is working. At least without making needlessly large files.

By the way thanks Bjorn for doing that Super Baltar lens test. I've got a set that I'm hoping to use at some stage in the future when I'm able to get a BNCR mount. Cinemods looks like they will be making one. Looks like it will be kind to faces and my set has been sitting for 13 years since my last opportunity to load my Mitchell.

WAIT WAIT WAIT WAIT...WTF scarlet doesnt shoot stills? i really didnt know this until now.

i have no idea why some one would buy a scarlet over a used mx other than the canon mount

It's coming with firmware... Not enabled YET.

And I'm happy to not be cracking my spine under the R1Mx form factor thankuverymuch. Tho I can get my hands on one easy enough if slomo is so required.

HDRx? Smaller size? The fact it's new and not used? Updates that will unlock more features?

I'm sure I'm forgetting a lot...

So as there have been clean answers I'll tangent slightly and ask - I understand the original poster saying that he'd prefer to shoot straight stills every now and then, but this reply makes it seem like that is somehow greatly important. I always thought the idea was being able to pull high res photos from a video stream, defeating the need to have a well-honed trigger finger and a bit of luck to get the 'moment'. If I was just shooting stills alone I'd just pull out my still camera and my strobes since I'd get RAW frames while allowing me to use cheaper flash lighting that freezes action better.

Put another way - I don't know why I'd ever plan to use the still mode rather than 5k 6fps HDRx. (noting that my camera is not arriving until next week so this is speculative)

Hi William,

I work as a studio photographer in addition to the video and other things that I do. Not all of my work involves animate objects and shooting 48 to 96 frames on a piece of jewelery or oil drum or whatever my project may involve when I could be shooting a simple bracket of 3 to 5 frames is just a waste of my storage space . Also getting a consistent bracket from shot to shot may be a challenge .With people shoots or moving objects it makes perfect sense to shoot in bursts but not all still photo shoots involve people. I often need to archive 10 gigs of data from a day of still photography shooting static things. Multiply that 3 to 5 times and the data storage issue becomes clear.

Sorry for re-hashing an old thread but are there any updates I may have missed?

I'm trying not to purchase the 5D MkIII for stills if possible. Would be absolutely happy with 5K APS-H for stills if the Scarlet can do single frames.

Any updates on firmware for battery life?
