  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Leica R Cine Conversion - aprox $8000 high quality 7 lens prime set in Canon EF

What camera body was the lens on? Is there an adapter on it?

my 24mm has very little shift. You can observe some at 10x but nothing that would be objectionable to me.
I'm not sure how much is due to the cheap mount adapter I've got it in on my 7d or the helicoid. I'll do a
proper test using the Allstar when I get one of my epics in had again. IQ is not so bad on the 24mm either...I'm
glad that Minolta snobbery has kept the price down...

Kipon adapter on 7D body. Temporary solution for testing lenses till I collect my set and order Leitax. Shifting was definitely there on the lens I wanted to buy today. Shame, it was like new..

Thanks for answering. And I agree. Thanks to the Minolta snobbery it will be easier for me to find a copy with no to non objectionable shift..

I'm getting together a set of R's myself. Just had a question (maybe it's answered somewhere in the thread, I looked a little bit around but didn't find anything)
Have you encountered any difficulties in using follow focus or wireless follow focus units with these lenses?. Some of them being rather small, does the ff need to be pushed too far back on the rods (maybe it hits the camera or something). And are they wide enough to be attached to the ff? (I guess the width of the gears resolves that problem) Would you recommend using specific ff units, maybe some work better with the cinevised R's?

Hi Vassili. I can answer this question. It depends upon the follow focus you use. I use a Chrosziel Studio and it has no problems at all because it has an arm system. there is plenty of room for it. I cant see you having any difficulties with the Arri FF4 or FF5 either. But you might have a difficulty with smaller follow focus units that do not have an arm because the gear box can be quite chunky on some of these eg Durus Cinevate.

Don't have my Scarlet yet, but I'm pretty sure (my) Shoot35 will not work as well (15mm LW rods). Hope the Genus superior will do the job (also I prefer nikon focus direction and Genus can reverse)
 
Hi Vassili. I have never used the O Focus Mini but I was certainly considering buying it and using it with my Leica R set. It looks like a really terrific unit and cheaper than the Chroziel! If you look at Abelcine's site in the video review section you will find a very good review of it by Mitch Goss where you can see pretty well how it might work with shorter lenses. I think it may work because you can put the gear on either side of the gear box and it looks low enough not to interfere with a matte box. I tried the Genus Superior with shorter lenses and the gear box was too big.
 
I tried the genus superior with a short nikon lens (the 20mm) which would be pretty similar to a number of Leica R lenses. It was on LW 15mm rods. The gear box hit the side of the camera. I tried switching it around and then it hit the mattebox. You could certainly use it without a mattebox. On a side note was disappointed in the amount of play with the unit as well.

I'm putting a set of Leica R's together as well, and I ran into this same issue. I have the Redrock MFF Blue now, and you can flip the gear box. Works just great now.

Now I just have a different issue, which is the follow focus hitting my mattebox!
 
Hi George, yeah, I was suspecting that would happen. The o-focus seems to have a thinner/lower gear box that could resolve the problem...
 
Finally put together my Leica-R lens set. They all have Duclos Cine-mode w/80mm Front, Iris De-click, and press-on delrin fous gear.
Also, I put Allstar mounts on these lenses and they are really solid.

Here is the list of the lenses.

Leica R Elmarit 19mm/2.8
Leica R Elmarit 24mm/2.8
Leica R Summicron 35mm/2
Leica R Summicron 50mm/2
Leica R Elmarit 60mm/2.8 Macro
Leica R Summicron 90mm/2

Duclos did a really great job for de-clicking so there is no Iris creep and they feel just right.

Try the True lens Services Raven matte box, its a well kept secret and very, very well made, and not expensive. Options for 3 stage side flags swing away. The guys that make this kit are Ex Cooke so know a thing or two........

Yes, my set is quite similar - 19 f2.8, 24 f2.8, 28 f2.8, 35 f2, 50 f2, 90 f2, 135 f2.8 all with Nikon mounts.

David, thanks for the tip concerning True lens Service. I will look in it. I actually think that they are the makers of the Genus Superior follow focus which is simply rebadged. Just one question concerning the matte box - how does it deal with the Leica R lenses lenses extending when focusing? Is there a flexible bellows unit availalble?
 
Wow Jay, I love your set! I'm thinking about going the Allstar mount route myself. Any complaints? I'd love to put together a similar set someday. Thanks.
