  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Any word on Dragon on or bigger sensor?

Nikon just released 7.3k, 36 megapixel camera for just $3k and D4 offers clean images in the range of ISO 100 to ISO 12800 on a full frame. Sure, it is not RAW motion, but DSMC camera nonetheless. Very impressive.

I think 6k sensor wold be absolute minimum to expect from the Dragon. Significant improvements in low light sensitivity would be welcome too.

Ahm... are we forgetting it still only shoots motion at 1080p? Line skipping, aliasing, moire, heavy compression, the works... all of that is still there. It's a digital stills camera with the same DSLR motion capture we've seen since the 5D. Only RED is true DSMC.

I heard somewhere that the Dragon sensor "is the shit" :) Regardless of speculation, I'm sure I will be blown away with the spec once its released. Its a sensor coming from those guys that didn't know better and introduced a 4K S35 cinema camera for 17.5K with variable frame rates 5 years ago... What was happening then in the market? 720p60p with 2/3 ccd's for 40K ?Or 1440x1080 "full hd" 2/3rds CCD "digital cinema" cameras for 50K?

yes, but DSMC is supposed to include Stills, and the Nikon D800 just upped the game for every pro stills photographer. If Red still want to corner some of that pro stills market, 14MP isn't going to be enough. It's already not enough for Corbis and has not been for some time.

I've had my EPIC less than 6 months, and now the board is off to waiting for the next big thing...

Not me folks. I'm having a blast with my EPIC, and I have not scratched the surface of all it's potential.

You speculate about the dragon, I'm gonna play with my EPIC. I'm not ready to move onto the "next big thing" just yet.

I'll let Jim and the boys worry about the future.. I'll stay in the present. It's fun

Jay

Totally agree Jay!

is the RED ONE ever gonna get another sensor upgrade ? is Dragon going to be compatible ?

Yup me too, I get that people are happy with their EPICs, but I'd still love to know if I'm going to have the option of upgrading my R1MX further (people keep mentioning that Jim or Jarred said that R1 sellers will be disappointed).

The ONE did already get a sensor upgrade. The one to MX. But the Dragon is a different beast. So until now RED ONE is not going to be in the upgrade path and I'm sure it won't be changing in the future. RED offered the upgrade from the RED ONE to EPIC so the claim "obsolescence obsolete" would hold true! It just doesn't make sense to keep on pushing these upgrades into the ONE since EPIC is alive. I don't know right now where the post is, where Jim or Jarred mentioned that the RED ONE is not going to get anymore upgrades, but I'm sure they will stick with it.

That said, everything concerning RED is subject to change. ;)

There are a lot of Red Ones out there. A lot of those Ones would definitely be converted to Dragon if it were possible. That's reason enough to think that it might well come to pass.

Here's to hoping, at least.

Yeah, but people keep saying that there was a post by Jim that said people will regret or be disappointed selling their R1s; like something upcoming was going to change their minds. If anyone knows where that post is could they link it plz? :D Or if Jim or Jarred could confirm the other statement about R1 def not being upgradeable any further, that would give some clarity about the future of the R1.

For me it's a money thing. I bought a R1MX package a couple of months before the big Scarlet announcement, based on the fact that I didn't want a 2/3 chip or different smaller lenses. It's already made me sad enough that I spent so much on something I could have got in such a smaller form factor, with the future possibility of a dragon upgrade, for less, brand new.

The fact that the RED ONE is still on sale, and the fact that they deeply care about it, plus it being between scarlet and epic at least in terms of frame rates, could be a hint that it will be in there along with the upgrades...
Cool let me know if you find a quote either way.

Jim said, at the SCARLET launch event, that the RED ONE was reaching End-Of-Life (per the reports of those who were at the event) and he has stated on this forum that they will continue to support RED ONE owners and users with software updates and other things as needed after they stop selling the camera and that the RED ONE design could not handle the camera tech that they are working on and would not be upgraded with future sensor designs and internals. Look at the previous threads about this subject if you want the exact quotes and whatnot.

They even posted that.. Still looking for it ;)

"Obsolescence Obsolete... we said it. We believe it. We are delivering it. The RED ONE was advertised as such. But we realized that it could not live up to the ongoing advancements we had envisioned, even though we offered the MX sensor upgrade which is well beyond what any company had ever done for their customers. So we developed EPIC. And we gave our RED ONE customers a way to upgrade to EPIC without any pain. Stage 2 and Stage 3 are our solutions to Obsolescence Obsolete. Choose one if you are a RED ONE owner. They are your choices. Don't think past these choices... anything beyond these are not fair to us." - Jim Jannard on REDUSER @ 03-22-2011, 02:23 AM

"Red One is not end of life but close" - Mike Seymour per his Twitter postings summarizing Jim Jannard's talking points during his presentation @ the Scarlet Launch Event

Hey Giacomo!

I played fourth in "Resevoir" whats good brotha!

It's feeling like they are going to phase out any upgrades for the R1, I wouldn't expect to see another sensor upgrade for that cam, but as with many things on these boards...that's just speculation.

Cool let me know if you find a quote either way.

Sorry Scott, so I think my first hunch was correct... still the RED ONE is a stronger camera than the scarlet in quite a few ways. So it's awesome as it is, and I think it still will be for quite some time, living side by side with the other two brothers.

Perhaps Scarlet with the Dragon upgrade will match R1 frame rates at least. That would be a nice replacement for the R1.

I'm guessing that Dragon will make the Scarlet "more Epic" and make the Epic "more better". Potential for higher resolution, better dynamic range, as well as a full frame sensor with lower noise as well. Sensor tech has come a long way. I'm sure Red is investigating everything. Those are just possibilities.

I wouldn't be shocked if the upgrade lets Scarlet X shoot 5k at speed. Epic certainly has the bandwidth to shoot much higher resolution at speed.
