What is the paint/finish on EPIC? Is it powder coated? I'm not very happy with it. It looks fine, but it chips off too easily. Every shoot I find another chip off of it, albeit small ones. So far I've been using it without the bottom plate or cage configs like FMJ's ribs, but now I think I'll get it just to protect the body from getting messed up. Maybe I'm being too sensitive about it, but the way I see it, if my car's paint chips off I'd be upset too. And my EPIC costs more than my car.

I dont think I could carve paint off my RED ONE, but it also is built like a tank. Maybe this is a downside of the getting the EPIC down to the size and weight that it is? I dont see how one relates to the other, but maybe that is the case somehow.

Just hate having a delicate finish. I can only imagine what my EPIC will look like after a year of field production. This happening to others?

My epic M's paint isn't coming off at all. The paint on the power button is wearing off, and the side handle on the bottom edges has some wear, but the body itself looks great. You should post a pic to see where it's coming off. I am with you though... Tough

@Mike: Yes - but usually directly connected to the mounting points for accessories & stuff...
It happens quite easily when using noga-arms or tight-screwing any other rigging-related stuff.
Maybe you can avoid it by really taking care but in reality you often don't have the time to do so (on set)...

After the first minor scratch caused by mounting a noga-arm I'm using thin/small plastic shims (don't know if that's the correct word) with all the bigger screws and I think it pays off already - but as mentioned, I've also got one spot with "screw-marks" on our EPIC already... but nothing to worry about (after all it's a "working horse"). Compared with the RED One I'm with you -> our One had a more solid feel to the surface... but of course also a lot more weight.

Yeah, its not a big deal. Just more annoying as opposed to problematic. I'll post pics to see what i mean. Basically, its just black chippin off exposing silver.

When shit like that happens, I'm not thinking about "keeping my baby pretty," I'm thinking about resale value. Down the road if I have to sell my EPIC, I dont want to be haggled because of paint chipped off the body. Anyway, seems like a good excuse to buy a cage setup.

Do you really think a Case setup would protect the camera enough to not have the paint be chipping off?

The RedOne was bullet proof so it surprises me that this is happening with the Epic.
Do Red know about his?

Mike have you contacted Red Support and made them aware of this?

It's not a car, look at it as a sledge hammer... then the little rental scratches will not hurt as much...

Any camera or lens, for that matter, is going to show wear if its used a lot. Things don't stay new if they are doing their job. I know I haven't...

My red one is well over 1000 hours and practically without a scratch, except for on the red logo, and we put that camera through its paces mostly on-location. I guess I was expecting the same toughness in build quality from the same company. We used a ratchet strap for added security to a car mount shot two days ago, and we had to reposition the strap cause a part of it was bending the top vents. Not used to having to worry about durability with RED. Makes me appreciate my RED ONE... tough hunk of camera.

Whats the difference in finish between the two cams? I dont know about manufacturing processes. RED's finish is smoother and a little more glossy. EPIC is flat kinda like powder coating, it would seem. Anyone care to elaborate?

No, I'm not gonna contact RED. It aint a defect, just not bullet proof. I was simply wondering if others noticed it too.

Does the M oxidize at all? I forget now what it is made of. The X bodies (Epic and Scarlet) are aluminum, yes?

Wow that's a bummer. I ordered a stage 4 and have been thinking about getting the cage for the same reason. I would agree that the Red One seems like the finish is much more durable in my 4 years of rentals compaired to the Epic rentals (but I have only used the Epic M, not the X yet... if there is a difference in finish). Anyone from Red have a comment on this other than it should be expected because it's a tool.... specifically why Epic seems more delicate than Red One.

Scarlet has been put through hell in the last month and not a scratch nick or mark. USe a tactical top plate for mounting no more noga marks no worries with ratchet straps on vents. You'll never look back.

red paint started falling off my red 300 prime a couple of weeks after getting it, and early signs of rust. the r1 had many rusty screws and bolts from the get go, straight out the box. i mentioned this in posts years ago, .. the r1 body/finish itself though was/is solid, apart from the rusty bits, probably a minor issue for epic compared to blackshadegate, freezegate, flaregate and deliverydategate .. why am i writing gate after everything, ive forgotten..

Sand blast, any one buffed alu does not look to bad, even though it's not the smartest color to choose for reflections.. :)

I really cannot say enough about the FMJ cage system from Brook and Viewfactor.

You can easily get by with two sidearms. Especially if you intend to use the sidehandle a lot.

However, with the sidehandle off ... and all four VF sidearms bolted on ... the camera is extremely well armored.
