  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Received Scarlet-X: "00" 775 Perth, Australia

Hey Patrick! Great to see another RED in Perth! When I'm next in town we should definitely catch up (I'm out of town on a doco at the moment and probably wont be back until April). If you need a hand with any accessories let me know, my Epic is quite well kitted out (and still in Perth), but not everything is being used (I've got 6 REDVOLTS but my REDBRICKS get used on most hires).

Also, say hi to Trainos for me. He was actually one of the subjects of the first doco I made.

We should definitely get all the REDs together in town. We are just kitting out our new studios at the moment.
Should be finished within a month or two. We couldn't find any decent grading facilities in Perth so we are building our own DaVinci color/finishing suite.

When you get in to town send us a message.

Small world with Trainos. We were actually at his former studio TRAFFIC for the shoot.

Hi Patrick from another Red Owner in Perth. As Sam says, excellent to see more Reds in town. It is a great idea to establish some sort of local Red User group.

Had a commercial shoot yesterday in Margaret River. Can't share the footage just yet but I can show you these pulls from RCX.

Still hoping for some release footage by the weekend.

Loving the camera. Incredible quality. We have been running a 2 man skeleton crew and getting cinema quality images in hours.

This shoot was done in 2 hours and had 0 lights. Yes it is lazy, yes picture quality suffers at times, yes it shouldn't be a habit but it sure is nice to know it can be done.

Shot with Contax Primes.

It would be great to set up a group. Even though we don't work locally very much it is always good to know where we can find fellow redusers if we get in a bind or just share war stories.

Hi Patrick, I have a Contax set also. Which lenses did you use above? Also wondering what adapters your using? Leitax?

Best

The shots above were on the 25mm 2.8 and the 35mm 1.4 except the water shot. That was the 50 I think.

The adapters are el cheapos from fotodiox. not expensive. They are definitely not nice. i bought 4 and only use one as it is the only one machined half way decent.

We recently got a quick chance to test out the Scarlet on a real job.

It was only a little spot filmed over a 2 hour period with 2 crew. We didn't have time to set up lights or anything like that. Bad practice but it was nice to see what would come of it.

For the workflow and other info check out the Vimeo description.

Great work Patrick, those Contax primes look tasty.

I felt the audio could have been given a little more love, seemed like the foley and music were a touch too high, therefore not as immersed in the VO as I could have been. What was the VO recorded on?

Overall a job well done. Congrats!

No doubt Harry. Definitely could have done with a little more time.

The VO was recorded with a RODE Procaster straight into Audition.

The Contax Primes are great.

Thought I would share our very first still from a Scarlet motion capture to go to print. This was pulled from a commercial we shot today for the Perth Glory.

The still ad will also be running in the national newspaper.

The still workflow worked just as advertised. Awesome.

We have a bunch of behind the scenes photos from today's shoot as I have been getting questions about our workflow (both on the day with a two man crew in a commercial environment and in post as a one man band).

We are shooting a little piece tomorrow which will hopefully answer alot of the questions we have been getting about going from camera to web/tv for the Scarlet user.

Here it is:

(A little more green in the skin tones than I like but in the end it wasn't my call on the look they went with. I gave them several options and this is the look they liked the best. To each their own.)

Thought I'd share our latest spot here shot on the Scarlet.

This one was really just two shots and just about the quickest shoot ever. There ended up being a continuity problem that couldn't be avoided and we had to scratch our plan on set. This is what we came up with instead:

We got the still from above and the commercial all with one light, the kessler cineslider, and a 25mm contax zeiss.

I also put together a little video on how we are doing our workflow with the footage. I'm hoping it will spark some idea sharing on getting the most out of your footage with the least downtime.

Stay tuned for that as it is uploading to vimeo right now.

Shot a live event for the first time this weekend using the Scarlet. It went fairly well. I was actually surprised with how easy it all was. I managed on just 7 redvolts to stay powered up for most of the event.

All shot on C/Y Zeiss 35 1.4 & 50mm 1.4 wide open. There was no light at this thing once the people got past the red carpet. It was really really dark inside. The camera performed flawlessly. A little pass with Neat Video cleared up all the excess noise.

Clip to follow once released.

Here are a few stills:

Good job! These stills are looking very zeiss contax! Like you, I like using the 35 and 50 wide open. I do sometimes find them a bit too contrasty for low light situations though, but it is a matter of taste over the look you are going for!
