From my experience all of the Cubes work best with a router. The router that myself along with the guys at Teradek have had the most success with so far has been the D link DIR-825.
Can the router work as a connection point between the two without an actual internet connection? Like if you're out in a corn field or something?
Brian, do you know if it will work with a PC too? I'm not running Mac anymore...
I've successfully connected RED and Cube 120 to my girlfirend's crappy Dell laptop. Just needed to install Teracentral and it was no problem. Apparently proxy recording is also possible on a pc as well, but the whole file sharing set up on it seems much more confusing than it is on Mac. However, they constantly are improving set up tools on Teracentral. It may be easier now. But, as far as simply monitoring, it works on a PC no problem. Stupid easy setup.
Regarding the OP about ipad monitoring, in my experience, the ipad does have slightly more latency than compared to a macbook or decoder into a monitor. Though many times it got pretty close. To me, my problem with the ipad monitoring was with setup and consistency. Sometimes it catches the video signal easily, other times not so much. The worst is having to shut the camera down or changing the battery on encoder (if you're powering it that way) and needing to refresh the signal to the ipad. Sometimes, the video just wont refresh. I believe the weak link lies in OplayerHD. I say this because teracentral on the ipad always will refresh a current thumbnail image from the camera, but then i still cant get the video signal onto oplayerHD. I'll be happy if Teradek figures out a way to let Teracentral do everything without the need for oplayer. Maybe that'll never happen but everything seems to work great in Teracentral. To have it all on one app would make a world of a difference and probably be more reliable.
Despite my small problems with the ipad, the Teradek system overall works very well. Macbook and VLC is solid, and so is a Decoder on a production monitor (or consumer monitor even). Not being tethered made a huge difference in set up speed. Sadly, I do have mine listed in marketplace cause I can't afford to keep it... or maybe it wont sell. Whatever. Is this a plug for my listing? Yeah it is. Great product.

I agree Mike. Though I'd say once you know how to set it up, a macbook pro is pretty reliable.
