  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet-X with cinemods NIKON mount

Just attach any Nikon lens to a nikon camera and wiggle the lens. The slight movement was not acceptable for me. It will be the same as the Cinemods mount.

Is this mount now approved by RED?

Are there any warranty issues with installing this mount?

What you are suggesting is that the Nikon mount has inherent play. You may be right but I have certainly never noticed it before. I haver never noticed actual play for example on the D300 when I was focusing up and I have only ever used older mechanical lenses. I have sold it so I can't go back and check. In my books any play at all essentially makes a mount unuseable. I would be concerned every time I used it with a follow focus. This is what used to happen with the original nikon red mount which was very poorly constructed.

I think that it is important to have a more detailed account of what is happening. Telling people that the Cinemodz mount has a "bit of play in it" is going to mean that people simply won't purchase it.
 
For an extra $500 you can get the OptiTek ProLock Nikon mount for Scarlet/Epic which also controls aperture. No play, rock solid PL type mount.

Seriously, for $500 you can make every shooting day a pleasure rather than a compromise. I like saving money as much (or more) than the next guy but you do need the right tools for the job, and the ProLock is no compromise.
 
For the record I have nothing against Cinemods. I am just pointing out that since they use genuine nikon parts, it would behave like a typical nikon camera. I have plenty of Nikon lenses. 14-24, 24-70, 70-200, and a bucket load of primes. When I put these on my D3 there is a small amount of play. This may not be a problem for most. Put a FF unit on there, and that small bit of play was not acceptable. I then decided to go with the Optitek which for an extra $500 got me control of the iris on G lenses, and a rock solid mount. I advise anyone to try out on a nikon camera the lenses you plan to use on the RED and see for yourself. You may be cool with it.... I wasn't.
 
I've been shooting video & stills with all the Nikon bodies from the D90 to the D3s & I am aware of the slight play in any Nikon mount...I have NEVER witnessed any loss of quality due to this. NEVER. You'll be fine. I too bought the Optitek from Jacek...Per Bob, IS RED approved.

Per Jacek...if the mount DOES NOT interfere with any communication from the MOUNT -to-the- BODY, it won't void the warranty.

But I would confirm with Jerrard.

Thanks Marq for your experience. I should mention like Marq that I wasn't saying there is a loss in quality. My main issue was noise. Quick movements with a FF was clicking too loud. The play will not likely show in the image.

For me this mount is just going to be an interim solution while Red sorts out the electronic Nikon mount. Having said, I can appreciate what people are saying about the ability to lock the lens down to get a rock solid connection. Concerning the Optitek mount, which I currently have on my Red One, there were several design features that I found annoying. The first was the recessed nature of the mount - it was difficult to get to the aperture ring. The second was using the outside ring to operate G mount lenses. You could not get repeatable exposure because of the lack of exposure marks. The third was the fiddly nature of having to turn the lens one way to try and engage the exposure tab on the Lens and then turn the locking mechanism the other way to lock it down. If I had to nominate one I found most annoying it would be the first. Is the Optitek Nikon mount exactly the same design for the epic as it was for the Red? Have some of these issues been addressed?

AFAICT all of the issues you mentioned could be a result of not fully understanding the features of the Prolock.
Not sure , but could be....
And I should know by now after almost 3 years of feedback since it was introduced.
As always if the instructional video and the pdf manual fail to do their job I'm more than happy to do a one-on one coaching over the phone or skype.
Email me and I'm sure we can resolve most of , if not all of these annoyances.
We are very committed to customer satisfaction-in our industry it's a must IMO....
 
Hi Jacek. On reflection I think you are right. Just got caught up in the discussion. I DO want to say that people should keep my comments in perspective. I would still buy and use the mount in preference to any other nikon mount I have tried. It is as many other people have said a work of art. it locks the lenses beautifully. After my experience with the original red mount I am not about to buy another Nikon mount on which you can feel play on your lenses!

I have actually found an image showing the Optitek mount on the epic and it does appear to be a slightly different design in that it is no longer recessed making the aperture ring easier to get to. Normally speaking I would use the aperture ring on non G lenses in preference to the aperture control on the mount.

I really appreciate the offer of assistance and will send you an email directly. Your website though could do with an upgrade :)

Patrick, the ProLock for Epic works on Scarlet since they are the same body. I have it on my Scarlet at the moment, switched over from my Epic. Works great on both!

Hi David, I asked my BS rep this very question - wanting to use a M42 adaptor for some old lenses. His response was essentially as long as it a) went on the lens (ie not a mount on the camera) and b) didnt have any electronic interface then it should be ok.
but..
It would be nice for someone from RED to jump in here and answer this question specifically. I have a lot of glass with a lot of adaptors which I'd love to use, but don't want to fall into any issues later down the line
 
I was looking at this mount and have been holding off for a while now as it is not RED approved, well it wasn't about 2 weeks ago when i last checked with them. It's well under half the price of the Optitek mount and would be perfect if only using manual lenses as it doesn't have the iris control. I don't think however there would be any argument that the Optitek mount would be a better, more solid mount and having iris control...you pay for what you get. The Cinemod is a simple and effective mount at a low price point but no price point is worth voiding a warranty. But then again, how would RED know what mount was on there in the first place.
