  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo...

I am wondering : what DCP server support 4K SDi output ?
The dolby i believe can output only 2K ....

maybe this is the reason why many theater that have 4K projectors , but they have 2K version of the Girl Wit The Dragon Tatoo

Most theaters with 4K projectors are equipped with Sony 4K packages, which consist of a 4K SXRD projector with a media block (Digital Cinema Server) underneath the projector, mounted in the housing. Theaters usually don't manage their shit properly because nobody knows what the heck they are doing beyond the popcorn machine, which is why you have no consistent 4K advertising or exhibition management beyond what the theater chains coordinate with studios for exhibition of specific films like Taxi Driver. Theaters can request the 4K DCP files, when and where applicable, but they simply show whatever gets sent to them in most cases.

I gotta say I was pleasantly surprised when I found out it was shot using RED cameras, after the film I could have sworn they used film.

I went to see it in 4K last night, and even though it looked fantastically sharp at times (which there were many of) I often felt that the work of the focuspuller, uncsharp lenses (or at unsharp stops) and the very dark scenes often will take the glory away from the 4K potential. Nothing that ruins the movie experience at all, but something that needs to be taken into concideration.

Hey Jesper - where did you see it in 4K in Copenhagen? I know Cinemaxx have some theatres that are projecting 4K but maybe you know more? :-)

Hey just saw it in 4K at a Century Cinema theater in Corte Madera (Marin Co.) and yeah, it was gorgeous. According to the manager, they just had a BARCO 4K projector installed recently and they just got the 4K file. He even rattled off the model number so I figured he knew what he was talking about.

I was surprised they had 4K there. The only other 4K houses I knew about are in SF according to the Sony 4K finder.

Anyway, I agree. Everyone of us here should see it in 4K if possible.

Very cool seeing the RED logo in the credits (even though it was in B&W).

I must say, Blur's title sequence was pretty bad assed...

Hey Tony, I did see it in Cinemaxx. I don't know how many 4K screens they have but I deliberately asked if it was projected from a 2K or 4K original file. And the guy at the counter told me they had one screen in which they showed it in real 4K, which was Cinema 5 if I remember correctly.

I called Regal cinema in Battery Park NYC ,
The projectionist said : i holding the Hard drive we got for the movie : it say 4K ...

so i went , watch it on Sony 4K (thither 10)

Artistic Judgment : LOVED the movie , Fincher is a warranty to me ....

Technical "4k wise" judgment : Absolutely nothing special ...
Image was Soft ALL the way (with i actually Liked a lot ) probably due to the kind of cinematography ,
image never been any sharper or "denser' of any movie shot on sony F35 or Alexa as 2K DCP that i have seen in that Theater (or Any other Regal or AMC that have sony 4K projector...)

The inly Ultra sharp image i have seen yesterday was the trailer of "21 jump street" ... for the first time i said ""wow" ...that is something i never seen ... maybe was part of the 4K DCP delivered with TTWTDT and was mastered at 4K?

but regarding TGWWDT in 4K ...ultra disappointing ....off course i cannot know for sure if : Cinema server--->projector was connected properly ...(i mean who knows ...maybe they had a 4K master and have their server set as 2K output .... or maybe was not even true that they had the 4k master (but the las read e the label of the drive by phone ...) or maybe the Sony 4K projector was ""fucked up"" ???

i wish i could stop by at Light Iron and watch it Properly on their 4K setup to judge if a 4DCP i an "experience from another world "" because what i have seen yesterday was absolutely nothing new or better that i have ever seen shot on alexa or sony F35

i thing thought : Resolution aside (with i really kind of don't care (but here we are discussing this new 4K distribution frontier ...) I ABSOLUTELY LOVED the Cinematography and the GRADE , it never felt digital for even 1 second , and the grade was absolutely one of the best i have seen on Red material , i have the feeling they shot it with ""softer lenses ?? or Low Con filter ? ir rally feel diffused and soft (in a good WAY ) , but for sure i did not have the WOW effect because of the 4K not even for a Sec

again who knows if in that theater they have there server set up for 2K video signal output (that would not surprise me ....)

Thats too bad. They shot the film with Master Primes which are considered some of the sharpest lenses in the industry so if your image looked soft maybe the projector's focus was off?. I got to see it in 4k and every stray hair on a head was visible. Pretty cool if you ask me. I've never seen footage so detailed on a theater screen.

I saw it last night in 4K and it was maybe the best movie image I've seen. Super detail throughout the tonal range. Subtle gradations in the blacks. The sky in the windows glowed. Detail in the flames when the car exploded. Our Regal downtown here in Knoxville is fairly new plus their corporate headquarters is here in town. Maybe they go the extra mile to get their 4K looking good here.

I was glad to see Fincher get a DGA nomination this week. I'd be very surprised if Jeff Cronenweth doesn't get a nod from the ASC as well. Given the number of good films released in 2011, it's good to see GDT still get recognized.

I've seen it both ways now: confirmed 4K DCP in Emeryville and 2K in Seattle. The 2K may have had additional projector problems. But in any case, I can confirm everything good said about the 4K version and everything bad said about the 2K version. If you were not impressed with resolution (you could scratch yourself on Mikael's stubble) and tonal gradations (even in flat outdoor scenes), I'm sure you saw 2K.

Now that I've also read the first two books, I'm also impressed with the screenplay. Quite true to the feel of the first book, with some plot streamlining (one major - though probably necessary for budgetary reasons) and some minor additions that enhanced the drama of this visual medium.

Saw it on an AMC screen projected in 4K and the film was breathtaking. Absolutely amazing look and feel. Hats off to writer, director, and cast. Rooney Mara's performance was incredible. Hats off to all the folks at RED. Red One and Epic did you proud. Go see this film. It is everything celluloid offers and more.

Saw it.........and it looked like FILM.....damn the Red One and Epic are nice!

Arclight Hollywood has it. Saw it on screen lower 3.

What I love about Arclight Hollywood is that you can call them and the guest services will tell you which theaters are 4K enabled. I called the other day and made a list of each screen and whether it is 2K or 4K.

That's what I thought. I definitely saw it in 2K, and was a bit underwhelmed by it. Would love to be able to see this in 4K...

Hmm I tried that the other day and they told me all were 4k...
that the whole complex was recently upgraded, to 4k.

According to the guy I talked with, there are three or four screens that are still 2K. I'd share if I had my list in front of me, but I'm currently in a mixing session. I'll post it up here later, if anyone is interested.

UPDATED: According to my list, screens 4, 5, 11, and 12 are 2K at Arclight Hollywood. Everything else is 4K.

I saw the film on 35mm print. Great looking film and if I had not known the film was shot on Epic I would have just assumed it was 35mm negative. Great work from all involved and really shows the Epic camera as a very capable tool in the hands of very good film makers.

I watched it at a cineplex theatre and the 2k picture wasn't good. I wanna blame it on the projector. Story wise, it is exactly same with the original which makes me wonder why the remake in such a short period of time.
