Is it just me being a grumpy old man or is the white noise on the forum on the increase? Not that I've got anything against the scarlet users that have joined the Red Family but isn't the scarlet user forum the place for scarlet talk? I'm finding it harder and harder to use this forum for constructive purposes . I don't wanna rain on anyone's parade but this forum is going in a strange direction . Just saying !!

Plus 1 John....

The paint my camera black thread is a recent example....

Between that and bumping sales threads, the noise factor can get pretty high.

Cheers.

David

As one grumpy old man to another, I have to agree. It would be helpful to have some way for the users who are experienced film makers to carry on a discussion at that level of craft without quite so much noise.

Im a young guy but I miss the way it was before. I miss the informational posts which have been replaced by a hundred threads asking the same questions over and over.

I've said it before, I'll say it again - Red user pro. $25 a year, the mods can get paid a few bucks, and it can actually be a professional forum not a discussion of photography 101.

@Jon, I've been thinking the same thing over the last few months, REDuser is in a strange state... Great thread.

REDuser embodies the controlled chaos vibe and a specific marketing strategy of RED. It is clearly not a site that is designed or intended to provide users/owners official company answers in an efficient manner. It is a social site intended to be "sticky" in order to create a community of like minded people. More like Facebook than a factory FAQ source. This builds brand loyalty and a group-think following. RED has been very successful in this brand building approach over the years.

So . . . if you don't like the "noise" then you are in disagreement with RED's basic marketing strategy since Jim/Jared are certainly able to fashion this site anyway they see best for the brand. I think Jared knows a thing or two about forum design, intent and function.

The grumpy R1 early adopters allowed RED to get through the initial years of development to produce mature products. The noisy new kids (me and others) are subsidizing the Stage Upgrade program for those grumpy R1 users. One is not better or worse than the other - they need each other and should be respectful of their necessary contributions to sustain the brand.

For me, I scan down the topic list for Topics and Authors of interest. I don't spend must time in the Scarlet or Red One section. I read anything posted by my 8-10 MVP contributors. I learn something every time I log-in.

Peace, love and soft bunny ears my RED Brothers

Im so grateful for you subsidy. :)
im old, but I'm not grumpy.

I just want this place to be the best it can be and, after reading your post, I realize that means accepting it for all that it is.

It always impresses me when folks who don't seem to have any affiliation with RED know so intimately what Jim, Jarred, et al are thinking at all times; what their philosophy is; the clarity of their vision distilled to a few short but infinitely wise words. And, David, like you, I as SO grateful that they share such insight with those of us who are so much less competent in our thinking; so much less capable of discerning what others intend, since our powers of mind reading are so much less developed. Ah, 'tis a wonderful thing.

Well, even I found myself rambling on today in another thread about stuff that really had nothing to do with me, and certainly doesn't directly affect me. So, I guess you could say the noise thing is contagious.

To bring down the noise levels, I would suggest everyone considers the following approach.

- When an issue arises or you have a question about how something works, or perhaps just a curiosity the first thing we should do is perform detailed searches to see if the subject matter has been covered. Quite often the same topic is asked in multiple threads, sometimes even on the same day. Everyone should brush up on their web search skills, including me. :-)
- Always approach a thread with professionalism first. We can all get goofy at times, and I think sometimes that's okay. But we've seen the line crossed many times here, and it usally leads to nothing good, such as people getting banned. Mutual respect should always be a priority.
- This can be a cool place to hang out(most of the time), and we get comfortable. We should always respect who's running the show here, even when we don't agree with something. A lot of hard work goes into maintaining this site, and the moderators volunteer their time.
- Not every Reduser is the same. Various backgrounds and level of experience brings a wide variety of viewpoints. I love seeing young people and veteran filmmakers alike around here. I think it's good to have a balance. Again, approaching it with professionalism usually helps avoid conflict, noise, etc.

I think some of the best threads recently have been the ones like Phil Holland's thread about his Scarlet. He's out shooting, posting images, video, insight. That's the spirit of a forum like this in my opinion. More stuff like that and it will be a very productive place to hang out.

Just my $0.02

The title of the thread is really on the mark. We could use some better tools for filtering.

For many of us, the tool we are accustomed to using is the "new posts" button: come to Reduser, see what's new. Since Nov 3, that has become a less-than-optimum way to approach this site. For those of us who are not waiting for Scarlet, that just presents too much noise. Noise, of course, is different, depending on your particular need. I don't need to figure out how to get power to my Epic, but I love Evin Grant's observations on lenses. How can I get more of one and less of the other, and still be available for new users to ask about the stuff that I know something about?

I fiind myself going directly to sub-forums more than I ever have. But that isn't really as effective a way to interact with the community as I'd like. It's an interesting challenge for an interface designer.

Steve is right - search would help a lot. I've answered about 3 basic questions about a dozen times. I almost feel like a salesman for a couple of products. (I'm not.) They fill a couple of important gaps in the workflow lineup, and there really ought to be a place to find those basic solutions that are known to work. Audio kit and Nikon mounts come to mind, but there are others. Perhaps there could be a place to simply post solutions that work, regardless of whether the makers are Reduser Sponsors or not. Maybe these could be sections of the various forums: something for Audio, something for Workflow, etc. Or maybe it would be better as a separate "Stuff the Works" section. Heavily moderated, no discussion, just the facts. No shilling. Kind of an "Angie's List" for Red Aks. (Disclaimer: I've never actually looked at Angie's List, I've only heard about it on NPR's "Car Talk")

I also think that Red could help by being be more involved in anti-FUD patrols. The lack of official Red response to the Black Shading and Gate Flare discussions let them grow way out of scale. A simple, consistent response from Red to either of these issues would have quieted a lot of noise and nerves. Something like, "We're working on something, but it's going to take a bit, so in the mean time, we endorse Doug Underdhal's solution" would have done a lot of good. Or at least it seems that way to me.

OK, That's all I've got for now.
