  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED 17-50mm on film camera -- not focusing!

Hey jeff,

I just bought an Arri 435ES package. Do you know if the 18-85 RED zoom will clear the mirror? I'm currently looking at the 18-80 Arri Alura zoom but if the RED zoom clears that's a major savings. I just assumed it didn't but thought I'd ask :) Good to hear that the 17-50 will clear the mirror.

I don't know about the 18-85. I want to think it will clear, but don't have a way to check as I don't own the lens. The 17-50 seems to clear, but like I said, I didn't shoot it. But it mounted up and we could peer through it via the OVF.

RP7 17-50 is one of my favorite lenses on the Alexa.. HA! That and the Optimo DP zooms and my beloved Duclos-modified Tokina 11-16. :)

Thanks Jeff. Gonna have to inquire further about this. Maybe Duclos will know. Sure don't want to risk it :)
 
I tried the 17-50mm on an ARRI BL3 and it would not fit that PL mount either, same as my camera. Sent it back tonight with RMA. I hope it can be corrected.

Once you resolve this issue you will be very happy you bought this lens. The versatility is excellent and you can use it as a macro too, the close focus is something like 8".
 
I can't wait to not to have to think technicalities and just make beautiful images!!

i can measure the rear end today with some verniers if that helps. PM me.

Edit.

The distance from the seat of the PL mount, where it mates to the PL mount of the camera to the rear end of the lens projection is 18.5mm.

Aha... I never would use these rubber foto zooms in a "new housing" on a film camera since they never keeps their focus during zooming... I've shoot with these lens 3 times from different owners and they always had these focus move by zooming issue...
But it is what it is! A 3000buck cheap lens for digital cameras and ac's who pulling focus on a monitor...
