  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Full menu control with only EVF/SSD on brain

This should allow you to switch to the secondary top menus.

is it easy to go back to the original presets? Do we need to back up something before uploading this presets? I don;t have my EPIC yet so i don;t know how it works.

Also, does it work with the old EVF?

But it sound like a great tool.

There are multiple ways to get back to the original key mappings:
1. A factory installed preset
2. A factory reset
3. A force_upgrade
4. Create a key mapping preset of your key mappings before hand to save the current setting.
 
I have still yet to find a way to enter/exit 'playback' and 'format' mags without the touchscreen.

You can use the side handle or REDmote to navigate the menus if you don't have a touchscreen.

Enter Playback:
SETTINGS->PLAYBACK

Exit Playback:
SETTINGS->RECORD

Format Mag:
MEDIA->FORMAT...->FORMAT
 
Thank you for this! Just installed it using a friend's side handle and it works perfectly. It is actually very easy to use the camera with the buttons as you have them set. Looking forward to our first shoot with our own Epic M tomorrow!
 
they should just installed a wheel on the EVF - if not evf needs to 4 buttons to navigate . 2 buttons short

Right, but i still have to be looking at a Red Touchscreen or into the EVF so see which items are 'highlighted' when using Redmote. As the Menu HD-SDI feed does not 'highlight' in real time (by highlight i mean the little red underline that tells me what i will be selecting).
(This is operation without the Sidehandle as no one seems to have it..)

Operators do not like me having to poke my head into the EVF every time i need to change something, and it is annoying having to unplug the EVF and swap in the LCD.
 
The great wonder is, if RED are shipping cameras without any means to control them, why aren't they making this work-around known and shipping cameras pre-configured this way? I'm lucky enough that I can easily put my hands on an LCD or REDmote, but not everyone is. There are surely people with RED bodies just sitting there doing nothing, when the only thing stopping them from shooting is this knowledge and the means to set it up.

I'm pretty sure that was the point of the original post. A pretty ingenious key mapping preset that let's you navigate the menus (and thus perform any action on the camera) using only the buttons on the side SSD and the EVF.

The only problem is how you would initially load the preset if you didn't have any other input method. Luckily we added a feature in 2.0.8 (currently beta) that lets you automatically load a preset file on boot up by placing it in a folder named "force_preset" on the SSD.

Hopefully that answers your question.

I ordered redmote but should get it after the epic so I wanted to know if I will be able to shoot without any of the three.

So, I understand by your last reply that is ok including playback and format, right?

Yes, you can enter/exit playback and format media using this preset. The reply I gave with the menu trees to access those features may have been a bit confusing because I explicitly mentioned the side handle and redmote. Instead, I should have said those features are accessible using the menus (and not just with the touchscreen).
