  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

What lenses would you get if you had 10K for a Scarlet-X AL-Canon mount?

Do not get a Fotodiox mount adapter, or any other cheap ones. Tons of play in them. Spend $350 on a Novoflex, it's worth every extra penny.

And whenever you get Red's Nikon mount, you won't have any trouble selling it on Dvxuser.

Nick:

I checked the ALLSTAR webpage, and I'm a little confused. Do you need a Camera mount base for the SCARLET-X, then a lens adapter per lens? Please clarify. Thanks!

Hey Marcos, I COULD use Contax to EOS adapters on the Scarlet, but I don't plan to. The truth is, though these adapters work perfectly well, they do tend to slip off. I've had a lens or two almost fall in my hand more than once.

I plan on using the ALLSTAR mount. That way I can swap in both Contax glass and PL glass quickly without a hassle.

Yes. The way I understand it, you TAKE OFF the Canon Mount the Scarlet comes with (we got the Canon Mount package). Apparently, it's pretty easy. I've heard stories on these boards of an AC taking off (on an Epic) the Canon mount on a moving boat, and putting on the PL mount, in under 2mins.

So you take off the Canon mount. You ATTACH the Allstar Mount. And they you buy SEPERATE couplers for the ALLSTAR. I'll buy THREE CONTAX couplers so I can always have lenses ready to swap in. I'll also buy a PL coupler so I can prep a PL lens as well.

Does this make sense?

It's a UNIVERSAL mount. So the ALLSTAR MOUNT is just a hole, and you can attach any lens you want as long as you have the right COUPLER to plug in. They sell CONTAX, M42, NIKON, LEICA, PL and other couplers.

Hope this helps.

Nick:

Ok. Is there a different mount for the EPIC/SCARLET platform than the "A-Mount for RED ONE"?

http://allstar-cine.myweb.hinet.net/html/red_accessories/A_Mr.htm

I don't see it.

I'm not sure of the exact mounting, but I DO KNOW I've seen ALLSTAR post pics of an EPIC equipped with the ALLSTAR MOUNT. And I've know on these boards I've seen ALLSTAR confirm that their mount will work on the SCARLET.

I wouldn't be surprised if the RED MX, EPIC, SCARLET all use the same mounting layout.

Just call ALLSTAR directly. I know their system works on Scarlet, for sure.

Thanks Nick. I send ALLSTAR a PM here, hopefully I get an answer soon.

Just wanted to let you guys know that after MUCH deliberation, I decided to get a set of Zeiss ZF.2 glass (21mm f/2.8, 28mm f/2.8, 35mm f2.0, 50mm f/1.4 and 85mm f/1.4) with an Optitek Nikon mount. I just liked the manual everything approach from Zeiss and the built-like-a-panzer feel to them. I decided to ZF over ZE after speaking to Michael Duclos, and althought I lose some speed and interactivity with the RED Canon mount, I just loved the final output images they produce. I also will get to keep my Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8 and my 24-70mm f2.8 zoom lenses, so in the end I just decided to stick with what I'm comfortable with. Canon L glass felt good in my hands, and Nikon G series was tempting, but Zeiss has the feel factor and I need that when I'm pulling manual focus and controlling the camera. The least thing that bothered me was the focus direction.

Anyways, I just want to share where my lens direction is at the foreseeable future. I might change all next year, but I'm comfortable with this decision. All in all, 7K (with the mount and Zeiss custom case).

Marcos

Also, the 24-70mm telescopes a lot, making it really inconvenient for matteboxes.

According to the blurb on B&H about the Canon 24-70 zoom...

"The internal focusing mechanism allows the front of the lens to remain stationary and to easily accommodate specialty filters, such as polarizing filters."

All the lenses in my signature work well.

The ($400) 85mm F/1.8 works very well and is less prone to lens flare than it's big brother. Also the 85mm L needs power to focus, so it won't run on a 'dumb' mount like the Allstar.
The 50mm L is my go-to / must-have lens.
The 35mm L is also very good.
The ($400) 28mm F/1.8 is good, but I'd rather own the 24mm L.
The 10~22 is a little dark at the corners on the wider settings at 4K. I really don't like it for anything indoors.

I've also used the 70-200 L, which works & looks great. And I've read that some of the 135mm Ls 'image shift' when focus pulling changes direction. Pot luck on wether or not you get a good one. The 100mm Macro is supposed to be the bomb for photography, not sure how it would work on a Red camera.

Have you considered a Red Pro 17-50mm and an 85mm Prime?

Bob

+100

take these two lenses and you wont be dissapointed.
why?
real pl glass.
able to pull focus
best bang for the buck under 10k
really i have the 17-50 and its my private favorite lens for run and gun.
for working in a production enviroment (1.AC etc.) i would go red pro primes if you dont have enough money and if you arent interested in renting out gear.
if you want to rent out. save and get some ultras/cooke/masters or leicas.

I'd have to agree with everyone about the Contax Zeiss glass. I've owned, and some point or another, the 21/2.8, 28/2, 28/2.8, 35/2.8, 50/1.4, 50/1.7, 85/1.4, and 100/2. I use them on my 5D2 and they will be going on my Scarlet when I get it :) They are all great lenses- some better than others, but all are excellent for the cost. I REALLY regret selling the 21, one of the best WA lenses I've ever used. The 28/2 is awesome and has a very short MFD, which is fun to play around with. 50/1.7 can be had for VERY cheap and is sharp from 1.7 on - its even sharper at 1.7 than the 1.4 is stopped down. The 85 was nice, but the 100/2 is the crown jewel to me, it's my absolute favorite lens. I used to own Canon's 85/1.8 and then 1.2 L... and even the L couldn't compare to me, so I sold it as I found 85 and 100mm similar enough focal lengths. I might pick a few back up when I get my Scarlet - I'm down to the 28 and 100 right now. Great lenses overall. The focus action is a lot nicer than any of the canon lenses as well, and they are built like tanks.

Question for the Canon L-Series Zoom users: How are you generally supporting your zooms while attached to the Epic / Scarlet (what mounting hardware, etc.)? Also, how do you configure your matte box to accommodate the telescoping (as with the 70-200mm)?

Best,

- Jordan

The 70-200, even the L2.8 IS II version does not need support with the Ti Canon mount, however I would look in to it for the Aluminum one, especially for prolonged use.

It's so hard to decide on lenses. Every time I think I have decided on a set, another post gets published with other options. The wealth of knowledge on this forum is astonishing, and I'm so happy to be a part of it. :-)

I have to say I'm still deciding on a lens set. I've got a 20k budget and have done extensive research (mostly on this forum), as well as lens tests, etc. Currently I'm looking at a Zeiss CP.2 lens set encompassing the 21. 28, 35, 50, 85, and 100 lenses (Combo CP1/2 set to get it around 20k). Also still looking at the RPP's. I know they are basically the sharpest lenses for the price, however, I would prefer smaller and lighter lenses that have true focus marks.

Then someone talks about the Canon L's...dang to decide between 2 lens sets was difficult enough. The thing that worries me about these is the sharpness and limited focus throw, but maybe I could do a set of L primes and get the 2 RPP zooms (17-50 and 18-85).

Don't forget that Zeiss is preparing to launch the first one of their new CP.2 Lightweight zooms. I'm eagerly waiting for the specs on that one at NAB 2012.

What hardware do you recommend for 15mm Lightweight support?

Best,

Its a bit more tricky to support Still glass on Epic/Scarlet as neither the lens can weight on to the body or viceversa, so the support pushing on the lens needs to be precise.

A good solution is to have a bottom plate screwed in to the lens Handle it self, and adjust the hight of the Screw till proper pressure brings the lens to same level of the Epic mount.

There are no purposed solutions for this that I have seen, and each of the lenses have different hight, some research will be needed, in truth I never use any support with this lens, but I have the Ti Canon Mount, and some times don't even use support with the 300mm, 400mm, or 600mm but I'm definitely getting a support bracket build for my new 800mm.

Might be slightly more than $10K, since used Zeiss glass prices have gone nuts. But, here goes:

Primes:

Zeiss CY 21/2.8
Zeiss ZF 28/2.0
Zeiss CY 50/1.4
Zeiss ZF 100/2.0 (macro)

Zooms:

Tokina 11-16/2.8
Zeiss CY 35-70/3.4
Nikon G 14-24/2.8
Nikon G 24-70/2.8
Nikon D ED 80-200/2.8
