Debate is healthy, but we need healthy debate.

Threads are getting derailed fast around Reduser so I thought I'd offer up some simple tips toward a pleasant online experience.

When posting....

1. Be polite.
2. Try to contribute
3. Reread your post before posting
4. Leave personal comments aside
5. Stick to answering the thread title
6. Try to stay on topic
7. Be useful
8. Don't drink and post
9. Treat it like you are in a room with actual people
10. Be respectful of opinions and present valid arguments
11. Don't be an asshole
12. Use smiles or say "I'm joking" or "satire" when kidding
13. Be honest
14. Respect the forum rules
15. Avoid replies like "awesome" except in extreme circumstance
16. Be a good reduser citizen
17. Ask the question, "am I giving as much as I am getting from this forum"
18. Don't be a hater, it's boring
19. Don't be a fanboy, it's boring
20. Try not to shout
21. Use polls sparingly
22. Post in the apropriate section
23. Don't triple post your stuff for sale
24. Be part of the construction crew, instead of the destruction gang
25. Know that we all want useful information
26. Try to post one useful thing per week
27. Rumors are bad
28. Try to be factually correct
29. Exercise restraint
30. Have a considered opinion
31. Resist the urge to self-appoint yourself to tell everybody else how and what they should post on an internet forum
33. RED can defend themselves and do often, there is no need to rescue and defend RED from healthy criticism.

Search reduser using this link to see if your question has been answered:

For urgent/onset problems the best thing to do is file a support ticket and contact RED directly to solve the problem.

Posts like:

HELP!!!!! Urgent!!!! Camera died!!!!!!

Creates problems.

1. It may be alarming the community unnecessarily.
2. It's not asking the people at RED who can help you directly.
3. Can lead to misinformation throughout the community.

Good thing to do in these threads is report back as to what and how the problem was solved or could be prevented. That doesn't happen often enough.

That's it I think.

Please continue to enjoy REDuser. It's a rich community full of some of the smartest kindest red owners from around the world.

Peace
David

Excellent post. I totally agree.

Please add that the best way to get urgent technical support is by contacting RED directly, not by posting on REDUSER. If you want assistance from the community, file that support ticket first.

Hé hé, good one. :-)

Awesome!!! Just kidding David. Great suggestions and hope they are implemented.

I think part of it is the influx of new blood from the broader interest and launch of Scarlet,
with individuals who are new and unaccustomed to the policies/etiquette coming in and
getting crazy.

Your list will help that a lot, thanks for posting.

Very good idea but I'm pretty skeptical just because I know well nature and character most of the kids and others that would like to be like kids here at the forum and in reality.

David reminds me on one Fellini's narrator, a famous professor sort of character that appeared in a lot of his films.

He mostly pretended to be a polite one, make nice stories and tried to make a certain order but was always during his speech interrupted and disturbed by violent, nasty and naughty kids and their jokes.

Have look at some of Fellini's most famous movies: Amarcord, Roma, Satiricon, etc, just to name a few...and you can find him there all the time...

Ciao Fellini... Come sta il signore Batistella...Signore e signori, buonanotte!!!

Thanks sanjin.

I doubt I'll ever be compared to the master, but it reminds me to watch those films again.

We want all those young people here. It's important.
I just like to see a constructive positive professional experience here. It's like that when it's at it's best. We need everyone to contribute. Those young guys have a lot of passion.

Debate is healthy, but we need healthy debate.

By and large...it can be found here.
But there's an undercurrent of anxiety on these boards.
..and it manifests itself in various ways.

The last new film camera has likely already been made.
There are rental house auctions left and right...
Stuff that used to cost tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars
goes for practically free now. DaVinci Resolve is free.

People can't hide behind layers of tech gear anymore.
Everyone is on an even level now...even Francis Ford Coppola
is pretty much self funding his films.

What is pro..what is not..?
2K for film projection...? shoot 4K for internet..?
It's all up in the air right now...

i agree that this is an excellent post and about time i might add that it has been said...here is to making it a sticky. great suggestions for contribution frequency and on that note it should also be the other way around. sometimes it appears to me that some like to post as if it is a competition to see who is paying attention the most. it isn't.

thanks for the great post.

Dear David, would you please scratch No. 8 from the list. Thank you very mush.
And while your at it, would you mind scratching my... oops, almost fell into that No. 11 category.

This is a much needed thread. I have wanted to post a thread for some time with respect to the rampant Fanboy posting on Reduser. As much as the bad attitude posts are annoying this too has become an issue. This forum is very much filled with an incredible amount of talent and knowledge from industry titans and that was always in the past able to generate a wealth of incredible technical knowledge and wonderful insights. But now this has become diluted with blind Fandboys and cocky posters who some how do not seem to grasp that they are fortunate enough to sit at a table that would otherwise not exist without these leaders in the world of film. They spout without thinking, defend without first listing to constructive criticism and fill threads with noise that collectively drowns out the clear voices of some of the best tradesman, auteurs and filmmakers in the business. I have waited long to say this and have only hesitated because I fear that my writing is a pour vehicle for my point, which is at its heart only a request for all of us to listen as much as we speak least we talk over the very people we come here to learn with.
