  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

STOP COMPLAINING ABOUT SCARLET SPECS!

I can certainly feel the pain of people sitting on a pile of 16mm lenses - but the cold, hard facts are that as soon as RED starts releasing its electronic lenses, currently under development, guess what? My set of Zeiss Master Primes is quite likely going to be fish food.

Uh, yeah. That seems really plausible. Hey, Canon lenses are already "electronic"...you should buy a Scarlet and give away those troublesome German optics right now.

If this sounds like you, you have the answer to why you can't afford this camera and why your project is still vapor while you blame RED for pulling a fast one.

Yes, because anyone who doesn't think the Scarlet is the answer to all their dreams is obviously financially insolvent and self-defeating.

"You should be ashamed of yourself for not loving the new Wunderprodukt! Buy one, anyway!!!"

I, for one actually am financially insolvent and self-defeating. I had cancer twice. Ain't made a living since.

Would you like to buy another XTR+ package? It fits some of your lenses. Haven't used it in years. Got a few screenplays too.

True that. Though I suspect there may be other negative repercussions to the collapse of the Eurozone.

Yeah, mostly more important ones than me getting a deal on a shiny new Swedish camera. But the cheapskate in me wouldn't mind seeing the Euro at...I dunno...say, $1.19 (like in June of '09) when I place my order. ;-)

Unfortunately (?) Sweden does not use the Euro; they never ratified the Euro treaty. You need to keep your eye on the USD/SEK rate.

I also feel very depressed. I really needed the latitude of HDRx and the 120 fps on a 2/3rd sensor. Having bought the camera last night, I got none. 120 fps at 1K: not good enough, HDRx at 2K : I get a huge sensor crop factor. I don't understand what happened, but I bought it. Spent all night tossing in bed feeling I had made a bad decision. After an hour of sleep went to DOP a documentary with a 2/3rd camera, thinking "How would I pull all this shots with such a small crew with my new Scarlet?" Now, back from the shoot, I find I am not alone. I might pull the plug...I don't know

For me the 2/3" fixed was a perfect camera...Ted actually mislead us, giving us false information about what is coming from RED. I was here at reduser every day, waiting for my perfect cam, saving (have about $14.000 saved for camera, tripod, media and other stuff). I guess I got emotionally involved into something I could not control. Scarlet fixed was to be my first pro camera with which I wanted to start shooting ( I only worked in post previously). Well that dream is over I guess. RED is a great company, what they achieved in such a short period, took the industry by storm and all that...what bothers me is if you play with open cards as they did, or I thought they did, WHY they mislead us so much with the specs??? Scarlet X is an EPIC-S. No new technology, nothing revolutionary except the price for what it is. All I'm hoping is that they'll reconsider bringing the 2/3" fixed back...

Ah, sorry! Danged ignorant Americans! I'd noticed the pricing on the Ikonoskop was listed in Euros and just assumed Sweden was using the currency. Sorry.

I also think they should reconsider the 120 fps issue. There has to be a solution to getting this, at least at 3K, even if it means a higher RedCode.

scarlet x opens the market for indy 3D flicks,
red is a digital cinema company with 4k in mind and scarlet x perfectly fits
for indy 2D and 3D cinema projects.

people who are dissapointed by scarlet, well they are not the targeted customer, which are people wanting an alternative to Film, 35mm Film.

this philosopy was communicated clearly enough imho by red over the period of the last years.

I was unaware Ikonoskop lists prices in Euros; apparently I'm the ignorant one here, Robert. They use the Swedish Krona over there, but there's of course nothing to stop Ikonoskop from listing prices in Euros. Depending on the USD/EUR and USD/SEK rates, it might be worth your while to ask them for a price quote in SEK, then calculate which option results in a lower price for you.

Heres my take. If we are disappointed, think how Jim feels. How much R&D money did he put into getting a working prototype and engineering spec for that 8x lens? Thats not anonymous shareholders money, that is his personal funds.

And then, the tsunami happened, which probably turned getting the technology needed for that to be produced en masse from a knife edge proposition to a near impossible one.

Think how disappointed Ted must feel. Or Jarred. Its ok for you guys to be disappointed with them, but don't get bent out of shape with thm because they shot for Mars and only got to the moon this time out.

Firstly, the announcement of Scarlet alone has caused innovation to be released by these other camera companies, thats awesome for all shooters, everywhere. Jim has never told anyone to hate Canon and love Red, Jim loves Canon himself (the glass and the sills caeras), he just clearly thinks that they can be more competitive in some areas and aim for more than just incremental increases in technology.

But Jim never lied to you guys, he never deceived you, and most of all he never put profits ahead of innovation. The same goes for all of RED. It wasn't marketing dreamed up by some agency, Joseph Hutson isn't some paid speaker with an agent and manager taking a piece, this whole community has been about dream an aspirations starting at Jim and ending at us. What RED have announced is incredible, almost impossible. Anyone else would have said it was impossible and just left it at that.

The fact that a billionaire threw his hat in the ring, and his own money, and tried everything he could to make the camera YOU wanted is something to be applauded, EVEN if for now he hasn't succeeded.

You don't have to thank him for trying, or even for dreaming, but you have to respect for it. Repsect him for what he's trying to do and what he'll no doubt continue to try and do. Jim probably still wants that camera that you wanted, and the thing that he has shown if down the track there ends up being a way to make it he won't be looking at whether it's a prudent release on a 10 year road map of incremental gains - he'll get it out there and selling as long as it can find enough owners and pay for itself.

And if he can't, maybe someone else will, but the only reason they will have dreamed thst big is because Jim had the stones to dit with Red One first, then Epic, and now Scarlet-X, so if Canon, Sony, Panasonic, Arri, Silicon Imaging or any new players come out with a camera that fits the performance and price point you wanted, thank Jim, because none of them woukd have even tried if he hadn't tried first.

Sad day for what Scarlet was going to be, great day for Scarlet-X, great day for RED. Scarlet is dead, long live SCARLET-X and all that comes after it.

They decided to merge the products and put out an entry level camera that is designed to steal the entire market dominated by Canon DSLR's and prosumer cameras. That's music videos, corporate videos, live gigs etc. while at the same time giving indie film makers a fully fledged DSMC camera that produces a picture that equals that used in Hollywood.

Are you seriously expecting to do live gigs or corporate videos with a Super 35 mm + lenses, where every shot needs to be planned, with marked focus, measured lights with a full dedicated team ?

I can see very soon people selling their Scarlet-X, because they were expecting using it outside of the cinema sets.

a good follow-focus with a cam assistant and many other things to comply with.

I do understand your point, but neither of these are required for every scenario. I have shot a lot of EFP on both the RED ONE, and EPIC, and have never used a follow-focus. Sometimes I throw the EPIC(s) into a backpack, hike, and shoot nature by myself.

Good suggestion. I just wish I could suggest that they use RedCode RAW. ;-)

Throw a canon zoom on the damn thing and call it a day. It's fucking amazing that it's under $12gs to have a camera that beats the quality of the $70g Alexa.

Just only one question left there how many old Reduser members BANNED today after the announcement of Scarlet lol perhaps jimm got busy in that now, anyways 4 years of waiting over here just over which started from $3000 end up with & $14000 (without lenses) lol great work RED team appreciate your dedicated hard work to make a movie camera which most of Red fan boys can't afford but also it was a nice business trick to make them wait for years....

Good Luck Jamse jannard

^ Didn't you post that exact same thing earlier in another thread?

Why does it need to be any more planned than the current DSLR users?

I can work with the S35 sensor instead of a 2/3". I can work with the increased price. I can work with interchangeable lenses instead of a fixed lens. I can work with a larger and heaver body. All that is fine, I have no problem with that at all.

I can not however work with 120fps @ 1024 x 540. RED says 1080 isn't enough, but 1024 x 540 is? That confused me a bit. I not sure what you can do with 1024 x 540?

I had the money sitting on the table, I was signed into RED.com. I was ready to go. But as soon as I saw 1024 x 540 I knew it was over for me.

If the sensor upgrade can bring 120fps to at least 1080p I'll buy the Scarlet. But for me and my needs the Scarlet-X is useless.

Is it a good camera? Sure
Is it a good price? Yup
Is it the camera for me? Nope

I'm not mad, just disappointed that it didn't turn out the way I though. Its not RED's fault, they did what they could, But in the end it just wasn't meant to be that's all.
