I bought my camera used and I never upgraded it to MX because I'll have to ship to US. Now I have my Epic and I'm on the fence. Should I upgrade?
Is there any reason not to?

Thanks

No, unless the Nov 3rd announcement implies, or there is some other indication that you can upgrade to Dragon.

I never upgraded my Red One and regret it. The MX is so much better.

If you are shooting along with the Epic it will match much better.

If you sell the R1 it will be worth a lot more as well as being in greater demand if upgraded.

Dragon is the next generation sensor. Epic will be upgradable when it comes out.

With the Red one upgraded to MX, it will match pretty well so it would be an effective B-camera/spare body. That's our plan with phase 3, to keep our MX Red and trade in the older one.

I am rather fond of the looks of the M when exposed within its boundaries...

You should do a comparison. The M and the Epic look very differently. Sometimes that might be good.

I've got a Red One MX and an Epic-M, they match well and working with 800 iso as a reference for both cameras is also a plus.
You should do the upgrade, you won't regret it.
I really don't know about the Dragon upgrade but I can tell you that I've bought the Red One with the M sensor just before they start shipping only Red One with MX sensor and in the end, including shipping, my camera costs me less money than buying a brand new Red One MX.
Red people always treat their clients the best way possible and I think you don't really need to wait after November 3rd to upgrade your camera... anyway, it's in 5 days now so up to you.

Upgrading to MX is like having a brand new camera. The next best thing is dumping the CF module and adding the SSD.

I shot a very special commercial on M sensor when the RED ONES 3 to 4 years ago.. still to this day it looks as good as the EPIC stuff I shoot now.

We all know that the latitude of the MX sensor is better, but if you shoot the M sensor a little more precise... then there is no real need to upgrade if you cannot afford it.
Here is that AD.

and also... this was also all mastered from the Proxies!!!, not the RAW files! so high light information was even worse then... but still did not concern me.

So don't worry. :)

Happy shooting.

Mark, this looks really good. Better than anything I shot on the M sensor. Do you have any tips?

+1.

I agree with you Mark, but only if you have the light.
The MX sensor allows you to do work at night like this: http://vimeo.com/23894008
Without the MX sensor, this wouldn't be possible.

We just shot a piece at Sing Sing Prison in NY. It's a dark, maximum security prison that doesn't hand out passes to camera crews very often and bringing lights inside was totally out of the question. We ended up shooting at 2000 iso which is higher than I've ever pushed the MX sensor and the footage turned out great. My Epic arrives in 2 days and I couldn't be more pleased with the RED MX. In my opinion, the MX upgrade was very much worth the $$.

Secret is... that i never look at the histogram.... If the sky looks hot.. then it is, pull it back. If the blacks look to heavy or the shot to dark, lift it up... Just keep rocking the aperture ring until both a perfectly balanced by eye.

DONE!!!!... It's as simple as that.

Then process your files to RED COLOUR 2 or CAMERA RGB - using REDLOG FILM. then grade away to your hearts content....

MX is better in low light. so the secret of shooting in low light, is over expose if you can, set your camera to 200 ASA.. use super speeds. Just remember, id the shot is dark.. then it will be noisy. if the shot looks good in the EVF or the RED monitor.. then it's good.

Thats the simple way to shoot M sensor.

Heres another one we shot with the M sensor... in low light some shots... no noise. :))))

First time I've seen it, but that is a REALLY well shot commercial. Massive kudos. And it's impressive what can be done with the non-MX proxies. Which means it can only look BETTER from there. o_O

Mark Toia,

You are one gifted *ucker!!! :) :) :)

Nice. Was that the video we showed to the committee to try and get the world cup in Australia? Haha, good ol KRudd.

One reason not to upgrade would be if you got bit by a poisonous snake and the antidote cost five thousand dollars and with out it you would die!

Another reason not to upgrade is if you are eligible for stage 3.
I'm regretting the upgrade cos i only had it done 2 months ago, and that $5,000 would have been half the cost of the upgrade to Epic.

We shot our movie with an Epic M as A camera and a Red One MX as B camera. They match really well. For the exterior shots we preferred to use the Epic for its HDRX capability.
