  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED ARMOR

- RED Armor covers both hardware and service labor for your EPIC-X brain from any of our RED certified service centers.

Excellent news. Especially this bit.

This I imagine wil be especially appreciated by those that buy a Epic-X and at transfer of ownership gets 90 days... Now there is the option of TWO more years to that and the price sounds really GOOD TOO!!

This program does not apply to transferred purchases. This is only for original owners that have the standard 1 year warranty. We may introduce a transferred program down the road, but this isn't it.

Cool Jarred, just finished reading the all the details on it... But GREAT to hear that you guys might do introduce such a program for Transferred cameras, form which of course
I imagine also the Evaluation fees must apply before the Extended Warranty can be sold... ;)

WOW... 3 years of coverage? That's pretty amazing...

Dear Red, you have a certain way of getting in my pants without me even realizing it. Thanks for taking advantage of my wallet once again...

Cheers

The RED bean counters must HATE how loyal you guys are to your customers. This warranty just seems to be madness from a business standpoint. Though I suppose it also shows how solid the team sees Epic to be.

A great idea as it gives a new choice to the customer in how to handle part of the risk of owning kit.
I suppose in theory these premiums will underwrite the service centers.

If I've got my facts straight, perhaps a similar plan that Sony implemented in the 90's where their dealer received a set $ fee on the sale of a camera if they were a service center, in return for servicing the camera under warranty. This was set figure regardless of how many times a camera was returned for repair.

Problem for some customers was that the dealers in my view, seemed not be proactive in telling customers about know faults and issues because their engineers would then be tied up on these warranty claims.

The difference with RED of course is this forum! where hopefully known faults will continue to be reported to the masses and also there are fewer moving parts in a RED camera :)

The best warranty bang for buck in the UK was mechanical breakdown insurance, it covered hired in equipment and expenses associated with the breakdown, for instance it covered the cost of a replacement Sony camera to be hand carried business class to Italy. The insurance premium for all risks and mechanical breakdown was around 3% per annum.

Hard to find this cover now, but given reliability of solid state devices perhaps local Red offices could offer mechanical breakdown (on all Red products) in conjunction with a local insurer? Would encourage some to buy RED lenses and accessories, you could provide replacement kit. A one stop shop.

So what does that mean for EPIC-M transfer of ownership? From what RED has told me to sell my EPIC-M I need to pay $1000 for transfer + $100 for evaluation services, and after all that the new buyer only gets 90 days. So can I buy or NOT buy an extended warranty for the new buyer so they have 2 years of coverage for EPIC-M? And if I do buy one am I paying the RED Armor price + $1000 + $100?

As a point of note. I called Arri and AbelCine. To transfer an Alexa is 0 (zero) dollars and the warranty is decreased 0% (zero). That is great business. Please tell me you have a system in place to protect buyers of used EPIC-Ms beyond 90 days.

Jarred said earlier in the thread that a separate 'M' extended warranty product is coming soon and also "We may introduce a transfer program down the road". So it looks like something to cover that situation might be in the works.

Will there be extended warranty for scarlet (fixed)?

Would be good if warranty up to ten years was possible, but then again with great creaking sounds from my wallet, I would probably want it for $200, and I'm not even Scottish ;)

Yup, that's why I'm asking for clarification. I would like to hear from RED how this will work, or if it ever will. Right now if you are the seller or buyer of a used EPIC-M, RED is punishing both of you for reselling which is questionable practices. Their competitors do nothing of the sort. So again: Will they offer EPIC-M armor to non-original owners, and if so does that mean we are paying $2850 for Armor + $1000 transfer + $100 eval price? Again, ARRI allows non punished transfers and charges zero.

If your EPICs are reliable, (which mine is so far) your going to make a fortune!... Very cleaver :)))) and good product.

Thanks Jarred.

So go buy an ARRI chris... simple solution.

I'm trying to Jarred, trust me. However, I feel I need to be fair to the buyer of my EPIC-M. That's hard to do when RED is being unfair in the first place. Please let me know how under any cost I can have my buyer have a warranty beyond 90 days. If you want money from me, I'll pay it. But how can it happen. Right now, RED is banning warranties longer than 90 days. Does this seem reasonable to you?

There is nothing we are doing unfair. We do not build the cost of providing a warranty transfer into our product. We don't induce those costs to everyone because the majority of our customers do not transfer ownership, so why should everyone pay?

The other guys may do it for free.. but they also charge $30,000 more for a camera that is 1/4 as expensive to make. Figure that one out....
