Ok,

My epic came back from a job with a broken hdsdi out. I like the et breakout box peeps put on there red ones. Looking for a similar solution since my camera was down in repair at red for almost 2 weeks! Having a single point of failure makes me worried.

thanks,

j

Not able to answer your question directly, but my rental policy has a clause stating that if the client breaks the camera, it is considered to be on rental until it is fixed, plus they pay for all repairs.

Might seem harsh but it ensures people look after the camera (this is aside from me going with the camera to prevent such incidents in the first place).

Might be worth putting in your rental policy.

As to a solution, some kind of breakaway HD-SDI plug adaptor might be good.

Also, the AC should tie off the BNC cable so it can't be physically pulled off the camera itself. Rather, if anything it should pull on another, more robust component like a handle or tripod etc.

Cheers from Tokyo,

Paul :)

Are you using any of these Dave? Sync Bob Plus looks pretty awesome if it's built well.

Not yet. I plan on getting one though. If made by space cam I can't imagine it's not built well!

I found out about them from Perry Ho. He's using one.

Perry, If you are out there let us know how this thing works out!

thanks guys! beats building my own solution. The sync bob plus looks like the best solution for me right now.

I have the sync bob plus, works great. Very well made piece of gear.

I'd rather it get broken, than a piece if the camera.

Sounds good. Looks like I'm ordering.

Hey CJ, turns out we both know Beth Miles. Maybe we'll run into each other on a job!

I personally always make sure I have a short BNC cable that I tightly secure
to my camera.
I try to find a model that is not too sturdy - so when some genius
just walks away with the camera or whatever is plugged in they just kill
that little cable adapter and not the BNC port.

It also has prevented people from pulling the camera over in the past.

I had about ten of those little cables ripped within the last two years.
Each one of those 10 dollar cables would have been a potential camera repair
or even crash.

Thanks for the kind word on the "Sync Bob Plus". We have been getting excellent reports from the field on these and they are selling worldwide. Recently, we modified the back plate to lower the connector module to give more clearance for some top mounted accessories. This is now standard on the new units and may be user installed to the originals in the field. The "Sync Bob Plus" unit outputs time code, genloc, remote record start/stop as well as the HD SDI.

I just joined the club on my EPIC-X first day on a rental. Came back with dinged SDI port. Not sure when or how it happened.

Glad there is a thread for this! Not looking forward to a 2 weeks repair for a $20 part though.

Thanks for these suggestions!

The Sync Bob Plus from SpaceCam really will address the SDI connection problem very effectively. In addition to this connection the module provides Time Code, Gen Loc and remote record/stop connections from a small module securely attached to the right side of the Epic camera body. All cables are fully shielded and armoured. The module is very thin and permits close side by side positioning of parrallel 3D rigs and reliable connection of a time code generator.

Also have to watch the DC power connector at the rear. Not sure what the ultimate cause was or if any specific cause was identified, but my power connector on the back of my EPIC-M wiggled loose. Also the triangular dock for the REDMOTE wiggled loose too. That piece seemed a relatively easy fix, but obviously I don't want to open the camera myself and void warranties. Sent it back to RED, FedEx is supposed to deliver it back to me on monday. And yeah, Tim is right about the 2 week repair. From the time I handed it to FedEx to the time they bring it back to me, it will be one day short of 2 weeks. :-(

The power connector on my M was a tad loose when I received the camera, but not enough to make me think something was wrong. I actually didn't notice it until I had the camera a couple days. But it just kept getting progressively looser. Then the REDMOTE dock plate started getting loose, so back to RED it went...

My EPIC-X is totally solid... so far...

All those solutions are fine if you want sync / gunlock etc etc, I'm just after a simple 'breakaway' relocation (to a more practical place too) of just the BNC thats to. plenty of people have top or bottom plates with 1/4" along them to mount a very simple block to?
