I'm curious as to what people are planning in terms of purchasing the SCARELET.

Are you buying the camera as a personal purchase? Or are you buying it as a company purchase?

I have an opportunity to purchase the SCARLET as either a personal one or purchase it through the company I own.

I'm not sure if one benefits the other.

My purchase would be personal - with small use through my "business", which is just myself - and a pc in my room. Ha. But for the most part I won't be seeing much return on it for a while - It's almost entirely to produce my own content to try and make some bad ass shorts, and a feature soon enough.

Are there more benefits for a company to purchase equipment rather than an individual to purchase?

Are the tax right offs of equal amounts?

If it is a company purchase, I could take advantage of the insurance coverage. If I purchase as an individual, then what coverage do I get other than the warrenty?

Whoa whoa whoa.

Guys first off a Scarlet system is going to cost over $10K. the scarlet system is going to be based on the DSMC design, the same system Epic works on. Check out the Red Store and take a look at the prices for the accessories, which will come to roughly $5,000 for what you might want, and then add the body which will be $4k-$7k who knows. Anyway, after $10k you're expected to report certain purchases as far as insurance/taxes/laws are concerned.

For example, your homeowners policy does cover you for personal items that you own, but once they find out you own a $10k camera, they will say that its for business use if you did any gigs for $$$ (EVEN IF YOU DON'T OWN A BUSINESS) and will deny coverage in the event of a claim. Alternatively, you can order camera insurance through any of the carriers that you choose, but they don't care whether you own a business or not. its the same coverage to them.

As far as a tax write-off. Of course if you set up a business you can write it off and it will be a great tax writeoff. If you don't own a business, then i don't think you qualify for any write-offs unless you can prove to the IRS that you need this camera for work (as in the company you work for requires you to buy a camera like this).

Your accountant could be very helpful of course with taxes, but they are also excellent at offering general business advice and you can ask him this exact question and I'm pretty sure you're going to hear him say to run it through the business.

Good luck guys, my best guess is that Scarlet won't shipping in large numbers till May 2012, and by then the tax laws may be completely different

I'm lucky enough to have a accountant for a mother. In discussing my soon to be Scarlet purchase, I was advised to set up an LLC (limited liability company), and purchase it through that. Yes, there are more tax write-offs for purchasing through a company as opposed to a private purchase.

+1 Ditto!

Objection your honor... speculation!!

I'm sticking with what Ted has said consistently over the past 9 mos or so, $6K for an operational package (although perhaps without the redmote). This is assuming a 2/3 sensor is still the Scarlet roadmap and they don't whip out an S35 to cannabalize existing Epic sales (very unlikely IMO). Jim's enthusiasm about providing folks a really good deal also seems to weigh in favor of the earlier reports on price. Just my two cents.

From my perspective the only reason Red would want to sell these for more $$$ than originally advertised would be to make all those folks begging to pay twice as much ... happy.

Thanks Jason. That was the answer I was looking for. I was very well prepared to make purchase over $10k, I just wasn't sure about how to handle the taxes. When you buy a car, I got tax benefits, so my confusion was being able to buy the camera at a high price. When I bought my first $1k and $3k camera, I did it as a personal purchase.

Thanks for the advice. Glad I came to the right place! :)

That's my plan as well. Even if you don't know anyone or anything, you can get the paperwork sent through (yay Internet!) by many companies out there in under 7 days for around $100. Totally fair for planning and making sure to separate your personal financial liability from your professional liability. It'll give me some added tax benefits, as well as a bankruptcy buffer. For someone just starting out (as I bet a lot of people drooling over Scarlet are in the same boat), it seems like a no-brainer to me.

I too am hoping for a price point closer to the original 3k for $3k. That being said, if it is as amazing as we all believe it to be I have funds ready for more hehe!

Military Bonus, meets Summer savings...meets small loan...meets selling Canon 7D...meets selling my Jeep....

That should cover it :)

I'm gonna miss my jeep though :( But I'll forget about it when my Scarlet arrives :)

Oh man. I have a 7D too that just collects dust. Maybe I should get rid of it before Canon replaces that camera with their announcement.

What they announce and how much it costs really is the factor here. Would love an interchangeable but not sure I can swing that if it will be $10k brain only, esp if it will cost another $2k for a Canon mount like Epic.

My current job stops existing come January first, so I'll be focusing full-time on my one-man video production/photography/multimedia business. I plan to make the Scarlet my first major purchase after the Sony PMW-EX1 I bought a few years ago, which served me pretty well.

Three years ago, I did the 'responsible thing' by investing my savings into a $5k IRA. 3 yr. ROI = -$400. Whoopee.

Since then, I have taken the money that I would have rolled into investments and invested it in gear that has since paid for itself. ROI = knowledge and happiness. Whoopee!

Next step, Scarlet. Expected ROI = WHOOOOOPEEEEE!!! <- sound of me blasting off into space.

It'll be $5999 for Ted's Scarlet, including the Redmote., but without SSD.

And that is one sick deal.

+1

If scarlet is 6K without sdd its afordable ... Other wise over 7K its kinda hard for me to buy ... Then i have to wait and see if there is any other good option available ... or stick to my t2i /550d + sony HDV handycam
