Hey All,

Just looking for some Audio Recording device recommendations.

I have been looking at the Sound Devices 744T to connect up to my EPIC-X (stage 4), but not sure if there are any other recommendations. Main work of the kit will be for short films, low budgets projects, corporate videos, etc.

Anyone with any additional recommendations?

Can't go over the price of the 744T - thats my limit.

Certainly looking for it to be linked via Timecode to the EPIC for ease of sync.

Thanks in Advance

Steve

I think the 744t is the best bang for the buck. Bear in mind that it's everything else that kills you in terms of expense: multiple wireless mikes, boom mikes, a mixer, power supplies, backups, and so on. Having the expertise to use all this gear cannot be stressed enough.

I have two other recorders, but the 744t is my first choice on a run & gun project for bag systems. I'm not a fan of mounting the mixer to the camera; you're much better off hiring an audio mixer and keeping that separate from the camera. In a perfect world, you can use a wireless connection between the mixer and the camera to at least give you a scratch track for syncing later. You'll also need a TC generator like a Denecke SB-T as a timecode source, jammed from the 744t, so that everybody has identical sync.

The Nomad is an interesting machine, but is only in its early stage at the moment. Much discussion about it on Jeff Wexler's Sound Mixer group.
