A 4k 9Mp Scarlet based on the original R1M sensor size and format is all that is needed to meet any of the current or anticipated competition from low end large sensor production cameras. Especially if Red can keep an entry level shooting package under $10k.

Dare we hope for such an incredible possibility?

The trouble is for Scarlet to be a genuine DSLR killer and full on video machine the camera needs to shoot much higher quality stills. 9Mp stills are just not going to cut it if after the shoot a client decides to make 2m posters. I'm hoping for same stills capability as EPIC but the filming capability reduced ie lower film rates etc otherwise as a dual machine it does not cut it. I think in reality I will be still placing an order for EPIC stage 4...........can't bare the wait!

Hi,
Either way it will be a one way war....you know whose side I am...rather we are..
I think you guys have everything covered and ready with all your plan A , plan B etc etc
Canon will be surprised on Nov 3rd.......

I agree. I'm a photographer that has been doing films (event/docs/indies) for a couple of years with HDSLRs, and still resolution is important as photography clients still make the bulk of my business. I'm sorry if this was covered before, but do you know what the EPIC still resolution is (equivalent to MP)?

I'm expecting Nov. 3rd to be the biggest announcement in the history of RED.

Jim

than i hope that will not be just scarlet , because saying that "will be the biggest announcement in history of red etc..." ..than announce "only" scarlet would be a disappointment (we don't know 100% of the details but we pretty much know what scarlet is)...so hope also that will be a about new products , But "ready ship" (or at least just couple of months away " (according to your new policy )...

Approx 14MP. Unless Scarlet has a S35 sensor I don't see it having this amount of MP. Even then it prob wont be near this.
It's a tricky situation, it's great that we might get 4k and everything else, but at 5-9 MP it means it's still not a DSLR alternative, for the moment !
However if we get interchangeable and electronic lens on the Scarlet it will be an amazing feature. For me this is the future, along with the remote and wireless streaming possibilities and auto focus / tracking.

Cammon, guys!:)
Look at Jim and look ar Canon!:)
It is impossible as for me for Canon give to us something very good and not expensive!
Of course Canon has to give us 4K camera (under pressure of Scarlet) but price...one thing is 4K camera for 5-6k USD and another 12-14K USD!
I am quite patient about my future Scarlet!:)

Canon will not bit it!:) Like Sony F65 will not bit Epic!:)

I love Garage Bands!

Being real, it's a big day for both, I am excited to see what Canon and RED release. This shows someone finally woke up. I've chosen my side though, Jim, You have my faith in your release. I'd rather be a part of something progressive and built with passion, where each person loves there job, instead of a Camera factory so to speak.

It shoots a 14mb RAW still. So I'm presuming when thats processed it is probably coming around 42mb? To be honest I am not 100% sure myself but in terms of what I've seen still wise it's good. It still is never going to replace say some of the lingerie stuff I shoot because the client wants that at 63mb minimum because of holding intricate detail and the ability to blow up to huge posters.

However I was in a meeting last week with a major UK high street chain who is really keen to shoot both at the same time because they will be replacing all their POS material in store with plasma screens so motion is going to be key to them. As much as I love the 5D for some of my stills and yes I've used it a lot for video, for the same clients, the video has really been a throw away aspect. Partly because aside from online they don't really know how to use it. What the EPIC gives you is film footage that can be used anywhere and because of the latitude, that stills guys know only to well, RAW allows you to match the stills much better even if you did use a different camera for the stills. One of the problems with any other camera out there is no RAW capability - for DSMC work there is NO competition for EPIC.

Can we imagine, just for a moment, what it would mean if Canon released a PL mount, or even Canon mount, series of rehoused L series glass?

I would LOVE to put that I my new Scarlet / whatever, lol. Assuming, of course, that I am allowed to buy one before something ELSE comes out.

4k Red 1 stills, approximately 7Mp in magazine cover format, have been used for high end glossy fashion mag covers, so while it may not replace a higher resolution still camera for very large poster blow-ups it is more than sufficient for many purposes. One of the reason higher pixel count still cameras are needed for large prints is to eliminate visible aliasing as much as to get higher apparent resolution. A large scale blow up from a Red has a much smoother more film like look to it than the same image from a still camera of similar resolution.

Yup, people are crazy if they think this is going to rival an Epic. I'm still hoping S35 will be an option for Scarlet. I think having a 2/3 fixed and S35 interchangeable with similar specs would be the best for everyone. Hell, I don't care if it is 3K (or 2K for that matter) I just want Redcode on a somewhat affordable S35 camera! (around $10,000 would be amazing)

I would be willing to sacrifice high frame rates and possibly HDRX as well.

If something similar to this happens I will be on Cloud 9!!! Then again the 2/3 Scarlet model was pretty bad to the bone in the first place :)

Has anyone seen any really big still blow ups from an EPIC. Where I see small sensor stills camera problems on large blow ups is always on skin and hair. Fine hair always just clogs. You can blow up much better say landscapes and get away with it. Also bare in mind where I have seen the best stills fashion from EPIC is where the camera is rotated to shoot 'portrait'.

Canon on the red carpet in Hollywood and RED from the garage. Head to head.

Jim

Can't help but think the 'we're the under dog card' gets played a little more than it should.

Spiderman, Captain Jack Sparrow, Peter Jackson and I think James Cameron would agree if you asked them.

Regardless of your production pipeline, you are mainstream Hollywood now... Welcome! Have a cigar. Take it in and look around.

You are an inspiration to every man with a dream.

I'd say they are in pure comparison of company size, they are the under under dog. Most likely even the division that makes one camera is larger from Canon, but that's not taking away from either company many different ways to accomplish things and many people out there who desire one or the other. I happen to like the Red way of doing things, but who knows some others might start to change so we'll see what happens next.

Exciting times indeed!

Ray:

This is what I was fearing regarding the Nov 3rd announcement. Next week (Oct 18th) Nikon will announce their long awaited D800, which will have a confirmed FF 36MP sensor, and will have HD video (full specs are not known yet). Obviously, for a guy like me who is looking for high res photography and cine quality video, I will be forced to either keep my DSLR and buy a Scarlett, OR buy a D800 or similar while sacrificing video quality but will have one body to do both....hmmm

Jim I hope…

Whatever Canon puts out you will buy it and put it on the Graeme “Frankenstein” test bed? The Rumored MBPS seem scarily restricted…and I wager that the Canon Mo if its 4k will skew like sh*t.

But hay maybe they release something that actually does the job??? (honestly who knows). Hopefully it’s better than a “shitload” of bubbles and popcorn, (on the RED carpet) ?

Ta.
