  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

3D is Dead...

Tonight, I was able to see the most amazing 3D stuff at RED Studios - Hollywood. Woah. It turns out that these were some tests done for the Hobbit. I was totally enthralled with what I saw.

I'll have to chuckle really big (even more so) when someone feels the need to claim "3D is Dead".

Of course, this is a picture of me without glasses (there was a limited amount of glasses, so halfway through the viewing we had to switch glasses with others). But, I think you get the picture. Hehe
 
A limited number of those Oakley 3d glasses?

The Hobbit is going to be spectacular, that's a given. The question is, will there be enough artful use of 3D to counter the garbage before we lose our patience. Happy to hear the tests were so enjoyable. I can't wait to see it in 3D.
 
So that will be Avatar and Hobbit as being the only 2 good 3d experiences out of all that I have seen so far... yikes.. the hit rate is a bit low.

Minus the reflections bouncing around inside the cheap glasses they give you when you walk in, and the finger between the eyes types of headaches all the through the film and the ridiculously slow shoot days using 3d... (i have mate working on the hobit and they are saying it's been a super slow exercise compared to Lord of the rings... , and massive post budgets needed to finish a 4k 3d film...

Lets hope RED 4k 3d saves 3d movie making in general and cinemas around the world project properly as you have just seen it. Sounds exciting.. because to be honest.. I'm over it at the moment. But Im sure If see what you have just seen, I'll be swayed back again.. :)

When is the Hobbit coming out.. 2013? ... thats a long wait to see something amazing from 3d EPICS.

I have not been to a cinema in the past 15 yrs, watched a few hundred thousand vids @ 240P on Youtube though...fuck 3D, the future is the internet?

Was 3D ever really alive? Very, very few have done it well. Most of the content has been horrible, just Hollywood trying to distract us from really bad storytelling.

Let's focus on making more decent 2D films before we move on to the 3D ones.
 
Ill be completely honest.


I'd rather see 4k 2:1 digital projection with REDray as the backbone for cinema experience going forward.

That experience is immersive, like a 70mm print of 2001. There is a lot of data to absorb.

More than anything else, I am starving for little films with great stories, great acting and great craft. Coming back to CARNAGE (a beautifully written stageplay written for the screen) shows what a director, cinematographer, four great actors and great writing can do.

Not enough small great movies, or, not an easy enough way to access small great movies.

Amazing Spider-Man will blow people away with 5K 3D EPIC footage in 2012. There have been other good films in 3D aside from Avatar. Coraline (I know animated, but photographed even so) Resident Evil Afterlife and many others. I am surprised to hear someone on this list say YouTube at 240P is better than cinema, is there not a FisherPrice 2000XL list somewhere? More surprised to hear praise for the 3D in Cave of Forgotten Dreams. Subject matter was fascinating, but technically speaking, from a 3D standpoint, that film had major, overt flaws.

There were issues with the 3D from time to time, particularly with the stuff shot on GoPros or whatever that non-SI2K footage was shot on, but overall, seeing the contours of the wall in 3D really helped you feel like you were at a place that most people will never be allowed to visit.

We've always had 2D. Are you saying we'll go back to B&W? Silent films?

The "new" thing is 3D, so that is what needs to win its place within the audience's mind.

And just to be clear, if that was in defense of 3D, I didn't say 3D was dead.
