PIX 240 with Red Epic Camera

Been ask B&H, don't have delivery date yet...

They are available in Australia VIA LEMAC. I am still waiting for my Samurai to turn up. Been weeks!

AbelCine is taking pre-orders. We have demo units in our NY & LA offices and we are expecting a very large shipment any time now. We believe in this product and put in a large order early on with Sound Devices.

Having been a Sound Devices customer in the past, I think I can say with confidence this product is going to be a rockstar on set.SD builds their stuff like tanks and they listen to their customer base quite a bit. So expect a similar path that you would get with RED in terms of updates and additional features. They are always fine tuning their firmware, and almost always for the better.

that's awesome. curious what are pix240's monitoring capabilities like, say compared to tvlogic?

The panel on it is pretty nice, but there's no image control and no scopes or other such tools. If you want a really full-featured monitor than this isn't it, but if you want a secondary screen that will work just fine to let you see the image, then the PIX240 will work for you. Of course you could never set it to show you menus from the camera, as these would then be recorded!

One of my favorite functions of the PIX240 is its ability to perform on the fly cross conversions. We fed it a 720/60p from an old Varicam and it removed the 2:3 pulldown and uprezzed the image, recording 1080/23.97p to the SSD. All it took was a simple menu setting -- record signal this way. I can imagine this would be very useful to the RED community where production asks for ProRes or DNxHD files for dailies and basic editorial. This would allow the live output from RED One and RED EPIC to match, either in 1080 or 720 (whichever way you wanted to convert to send out). Very versatile.

Yes, Mitch...This feature is awesome...Up/Down-Conversion...

Hmm, will it works with IDX's CamWave ?

Very good point. Have you tried on a R1 yet?

I have a Sound Devices mixer and it is a work of industrial art. If the PIX 240 or 220 is anything like their sound products then these guys will be major Players in this field. Def on my Must-Have list. Just hoping their SDI connection will trigger with RED record-button...?

Yes it does trigger recording with Red record button through SDI.

question is, is epic's output a scaled full debayer output? without that any of these outboard recorders have limited use

No sure, but I can tell you the quality is exceptional. We just completed a project where we finished the entire project from the AJA KiPro mini prores 1080p files. Although this won't be our primary use, I was surprised by the results.
I think most will use these for off-line or dailies, so it won't be as important.

keep in mind neither of these record the highest quality 444 prores or DNXHD files anyway.

Mitch,

The realtime cross conversion feature was something I have been wondering around ever since they announced the PXI240. Thanks!
So what about the metadata?

I have asked this question in several threads, as well as starting a new thread specifically to get an answer as to the debayer quality of the Epic SDI out. Additionally I have PM'd Stuart English. I have not received a response on any front. It would be useful information as a slew of these devices seem to be coming to market.

Actually, the Pix can record in DNxHD220X (175X for 23.98 fps), which IS the highest quality available using Avid's codec. Neither one currently records the ProRes4444 codec, at least to my knowledge, but they both will do ProRes422HQ, which is a 220Mb, 10 bit codec and relatively equivalent to DNx220X (some might say a copy of it - not me, though.... ;-D ). If one wants uncompressed recording, there are solutions for that, too. Among those are the Convergent Designs Gemini (about $6K last time I checked) and the Blackmagic HyperDeck Shuttle, which is considerably less costly than any of these devices, at around $350. Even with the required SSD's running more than that (about $450 for 250GB), it's still a very economical device.
