  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC scouting video.......

Was this graded at all? I find it ridiculous that this is your "scouting"/"testing" footage. Seriously. This is an impromptu, 'lets see how it looks' type of deal? And it looks like that? It's a slap in the face to anyone who has ever spent a boatload of money filming in a hospital. In fact, I bet if you walked in with the actors, you could have just shot the scene and the audience wouldn't have even noticed that it was essentially a point-and-shoot.

I think you just sold some EPICS tonight.. Hahaha. I did some CC in RCX but that's it.. Honestly I see sunken eyes, etc, but yes, it's definitely acceptable for many.. Thus convincing this low budget show I'm about to shoot we still need more lights was a bit difficult!
Thans agan for the highest compliment, I will pass it on to my EPIC ;-)

Take a mono pod with you... youll be amazed how that little stick saves the day...

And do some tests for yourself later in AE 5.5 using the Stabilze funtion... That will blow you away. It will look like you have a super techno telescoping through the hall... it's crazy good.

Also Borne idendity is famous for shakey hand helds... It added alot of excitment to scenes.
I will have a handheld rig and an easy rig on the shoot.. Will be more steady, but thanks for the heads up.. I loved your 300fps video with the surfers!

I'd call this a bit of an exaggeration. Any location with the right available light can look awesome. Epics don't magically make everything look Hollywood-professional. Justin is simply a talented dude with a location that is perfectly suitable for available light shooting. As a DP, if one is more inclined to film scenes with available light, you will quickly develop an "eye" for places with good natural lighting. One shouldn't expect to simply show up, crank up the ISO and everything will look like Roger Deakins shot it.

Thanks Jonathan, very true, the EPIC is not just a point, shoot and it will all look good.. Lens choice, and framing are just as important as lighting.. Also remember I just showed what looked good.. Not the shit that looked like shit that I also shot..

Lights are you friends, there when you need them.. Don't use your friends just because they are there.. Hahaha what a bad comparison!
Start shooting OCT 4th.. I will try and post some grabs when/ if possible.

I hope hope hope that My BOMB squad will be able to get me the Canon Mount for the show.. I'm dying to use my 70-200 for some shots, and couldn't see any PL lens doing what I need in that size configuration..

That looks great for very little grading. I get your sunken eyes but for a ruff walk through and just sort of seeing whats there what a great camera.
Wish mine was here.
Thanks for the post. Answered a few questions I had be wondering about.
Did you just cradle the camera for the low stuff and shoulder hanging on to rods or maybe??? I get it it was a walk through.
Also everyone asks me why do you need more than 2K, 4K,5K what is it all for. If you shot this just a little looser you could use a motion stableizing software and get to pick how much shaky organic look you want or dont want later in post.

Thanks Russ,

I basically had it rigged in the most uncomfortable way you could imagine, with the RED BRICK on the back and no rig at all. I had no idea I was going to shoot as much as I did.. it was 100% cradled.. For the shoot I will be on a doorway dolly being pulled/pushed down the hallway for those shots, with an easy rig. For the interiors I will also have the easy rig on.. It will be stable.. I'm not a fan for stabilizing software. If I can be stable enough for the shoot then I will find someone who knows what they are doing..

As for 2k, 4k, 5k,.. I think resolution is a big thing, and I want as much as I can get.. I also like the ability to shoot full frame and 2.4:1..

Is that Lee I saw there at the end?

Looks like a fun shoot!

Yep thats Lee.. He's directing the feature I'm shooting next month
