It is quiet now. It will be quiet for a bit.

We are shipping EPIC-Xs now on a fairly good clip and that will accelerate as we move along.

REDCINE-X Professional has released and there will be regular updates. Lots of cool stuff coming. Free as usual.

We are letting everyone else get their announcements out. Letting the dust settle.

Then expect an explosion. A really big one.

I have to chuckle with some of the releases coming out now. You thought we were a "hype machine"?

If you bought a RED ONE in 2006 (for $17,500), you got many free firmware upgrades and then a paid sensor upgrade (MX for under $6K). So you were in a 4K camera (same one that shot The Social Network) for $23,500. If you had a Sony 950 in 2006 and tried to stay current, you would have bought an F23, an F35 and soon an F65. Total well over $500K with recorders. Or you could have bought an Arri D20, then a D21 and then an Alexa for the same amount. And you wouldn't have a "future proof" camera until you took delivery of the F65.... a few months from now. Did I mention upgrade program to EPIC?

Sony's newest claim is that they "Aim to achieve the absolute #1 position with CMOS sensors". Good luck with that. I guess we should be flattered because it implies that they are not there now... and maybe we are just sitting on our hands. Sounds like a challenge. We accept.

While I have committed to not announce anything until it is ready, please expect us to have your back and be ahead of the pack.

Jim

hahaha nice to hear that...
come'on
what a ride

Sometimes a bit of rest and quiet is a good thing. Time for family, for paying bills, for watching backlogs of tivo, and editing reels. But not too long oK? The IBC announcements are pretty lame this year.
Looking forward to your tsunami Jim!

Haha.... Well said Jim......

Does JVC's little 1/2 inch 4k prototype mean Scarlet might be upgradeable to this seemingly impending new standard?

Makes perfect sense

There are things Sony cannot do, Jim. Even if the new Sony sensors are somehow more capable, we will be talking about minor differences, like how a Ferrari 458 arguably handles better than a Mclaren 12c. The big difference between Red and these other manufacturers is this passion and care for its product and costumers. I'm not a Red owner (yet) , but I can truly identify with your commitment to produce the best products' because all of you are, somehow, passionate about filmmaking. And by the overwhelming support you get from your user base, it is obvious you don't let you costumers down.

Having said that, I can't help but feel a bit disappointed I will not be able to "enter my ring" with a Red product this year, and will probably once again have to use obsolete equipment- and have to resort to flashy workarounds to at least stay "in the race" with the big boys , who at the "straights" ("pure image performance") just pull away and I can't catch up. I'll have to, like I've done for the last 3 years, try to catch up "in the corners", were its much more about skill- but damn would I love to at least be competitive on the straights! :) As part of the sub 20K crowd, I will wait for your "explosion". Its the only way to go. I'm passionate about filmmaking and about my own productions, and Red with its unique, passionate and proud approach give me the confidence to "join the team". I feel I won't be let down, because Red is passionate about being the best and giving us the best, and, above all listen to us. This gives me confidence to invest, even if I know some bugs need to be sorted out in the early stages. When buying Red, I believe everyone feels part of a unique team that aims trough passion for the art of video and filmmaking to achieve excellence, beyond elitisms- just true passion.

I think you have to remember that we are only a 5 year old company... just getting started. Our library of information and capability is growing. Our commitment to the industry is clear. You should expect a lot from us. You should expect us to lead the industry just as we have done since the 1st day we entered the market. Nothing less.

Jim,

RED developed EPIC, the smallest and lightest 4K camera on the market that Sony or who else is not able to do in the next 3-5 years.

RED could do a bit more and faster in a sensor field of development and also push more at the research and development of HDR in a way I already proposed here before.

That means with development of 14 stops of DR native in upcoming RED Dragon upgrade and maybe 15 stops of DR in possible HDRx2 mode RED could claim enough motion usable DR

and with that be safe in terms of sensor development for the next three years.

But never lose this "Ferrari" quality you guys have. I hope you understand what I mean. I'm not saying on a non affordable, elitist perspective, but on the passionate approach to your products. I don't know if you follow Formula 1, but last weekend showed what passion and motorsports were all about. I'm more of a Mclaren fan (Because of Senna), but Ferrari is an Italian institution because its built around this passion for racing and motorsport excellence. Red feels, to me, quite similar in concept. Jim, you're probably quite comparable to Enzo Ferrari!

Sony didn't want me to shoot anything with their cameras before...why should I be impressed with them now? They made the wrong bet when they placed their attention on the elite and the studio system instead of guys like me. Too bad the studios and their elite customer base have already started jumping ship...

Thanks for being the first company that wanted my business without insulting me with junk nobody wants to shoot on.
