After what felt like quite a wait since being announced (a mere blink of an eye in 'REDTIME' tm :wink5: ) - the new lightweight benchmark has been updated.
Head (D) / here (Ds)
Tripod

The tripod appears to be the same as the Sachtler ENG 2 CF HD with the mid-level spreader and feet.

I was told by OConnor that the prices for the head will be same as the 1030HD and 1030HDS. The sticks I don't know.

I'm not aware of prices or timing. I'm keen to place an order though if any dealers want to chime in.

Sachtler, O'Conner and Vinten are all (owned by) the same company now. I wanted black aluminum cine legs instead of the usual silver. O'Conner only come in silver, Sachtler in black. Literally the ONLY difference is the sticker.

Are you kidding me? They may be all owned by Vitec but O'Connor is in a class by itself. In fact all three companies seemingly have independent designs and features. Having owned all three at one time or another, O'Connor tripods are flat out the best made and performing. Virtually all major features and commercials use O'Connor, exclusively. It's not because it of its brand name. Their tripods are like Arri gear. Nothing has the smoothness, build, zero backlash and adjustability. Oddly enough, the only tripod IMO that comes close in terms of smoothness are Millers. But they lack in other areas for the kind of production I do (Features/Commercials). Saying the only difference is the sticker is like saying Panasonic and JVC are the same (after all they're owned by the same company) or that Volkswagon and Porsche are the same.

PS. Take a look at Ronford tripods for legs. I currently own an OC 2060 with Ronford Medium Duty two stage legs and they are the best legs I've ever used. No twist at all. Completely rigid. Can get as low as babies (we don't take babies on jobs anymore) and up to close to 6'. Unlike Sachtler CF's they don't stick or twist. All the parts that would most likely break are die cast aluminum. Everything can be adjusted with a phillips. They make a two stage lightweight which would be perfect for a 1030. It's 11lbs, goes as low as babies and up to six feet. Genius. Can't say enough about them. The price is great too.

Actually Paul was just talking about the legs and he was absolutely correct - they are identical - the only difference is indeed the sticker. That's not a bad thing though as the Sachtler legs and spreaders are great - you're right about the heads though, they are, of course, entirely different, and I do agree that the O'Connors are a class above.

Incidentally, can anyone who has the 1030D compare the drag levels to the old 1030S etc.? With the 2060HD having the ridiculously light drag as a "feature" I wondered if these were really light even on maximum drag too?
