ATTENTION: RED has found the cure to this problem and providing the firmware update very soon

Hi, it's emergency for my friend. He got an Epic-M on a job today and the Epic-M he rented stopped working (he should have rented ours from the beginning). No matter he connects the AC or battery, the Epic-M won't boot.

Is there any quick recovery to this?

Interestingly our camera would not boot off a battery but would off the supplied PSU...I started thinking current spikes but now it seems to boot off the battery OK....very strange...

I think they are not seeing anything at this point. Our camera is going out to the job instead.

I'm going to check on the LED when I get to the site this evening.

Just heard the update from the DIT, the LED is on and the fan goes on. I would do a force firmware update when I get there.

Our epic sometimes does not boot with fully charged hytron batteries... We ran into this issue occasionally with RED one... needing to have the "edge" taken off the batteries before the camera played nice. Could be an issue maybe?

The Epic will not boot using a >17v source. The easiest solution is to turn accessories on before the camera. The accessory draw will usually pull the battery voltage down low enough to start the camera. VCLX batteries are particularly susceptible to producing more than 17v.

Emergencies like this are best handled by contacting RED directly!

Contact RED.

Anyhow, the few issues I have had with the Epics have been battery/Voltage related, and sounded like this.
Good to know for later, as it gave me the scare the first time.

Too much or too little is bad for the stability of the Epic.
After knowing that: No problems.

Same goes for me.

If you know which batteries to take and when to
swap 'em, everything is fine.

I guess, it's always good to have the power adaptor with
you,it worked perfectly to boot it up after these
power issues... (anyway only once in 10 weeks!)

Hi Kaku,

Could you update this post if there is a resolution and update the first post in the thread?

Or a reccomended troubleshoot as Gunliek and Christian have posted.

This might take the sting out of the alarming title of your thread, which could freak people out a bit.

Morning,

I had perhaps a similar issue to this yesterday on a shoot. I did a system restore and when the camera rebooted it just power cycled. The fan kept starting up loud like it down on initial boot but the screen didn't power up, just kept cycling. I was told by Red Europe to take the side panel off the camera (the SSD module side) and try again. I was just about to get a bike sent with the correct Torx screwdriver then it seemed to sort itself out. This is after about 15 min of messing around. Kind of makes me worried that the same thing could happen again.

Also the end of the day I had about 20 "power spike" errors/reeboots... Sucks more than a bit as we were pushed for time already. I'll install the latest firmware but as it happened at the end of the day it'd be hard to replicate a whole day of shooting in the kit room. I'll also email over the log to Red to see if they can figure anything out. This is the first time my camera has played up this badly but it defo shook my confidence!

I've had two bodies in the past two weeks on car commercials that wouldn't boot up (just once each) with vclx batteries or red volts. I plugged in to AC (running off a Honda 2000) and booted up again fine. Sometimes I'll take off all the accessories (sidehandle and SSD as well as redmote and make sure it's powered down). Go back to the basics. LED was red and would blink when depressing the power button but go back to red. With red volt would be red but not come back, no LED after depressing. AC power fixed it. That's good info on the vclxs Brook and co-powering some accessories to take the edge off.

I agree with you, but the information you just provided the community here can help prevent these issues and take some of the load off RED.

As long as. These thread stay solutions based I think everyone wins.

Thanks for posting.

Hi,

Thank you all for your input. Our Epic-M saved the shoot (it was big shoot, there were over 30 people there) at least, even RED ROCKED accelerated Mac Pro served to playback Epic footage in realtime for footage inspection.

Unfortunately the client needed to return the problem Epic-M to the rental house as is, so I couldn't call RED to go through the problem. I will ask them later and if I find out, I will post the update.

So far, ours never had problems like this but I remember once I had the similar problem on my RED ONE MX.
