  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Anyone using GTX 580 with DaVinci Resolve?

and not OS X? Why? Surely it's all CUDA/CE/QI processing so why can't all Nvidia GTX cards work with Resolve? They must be programmed NOT to work...but I can't think why.

There is no card which is programmed to not work. We only display a warning for unsupported cards, but even then we attempt to use it at your risk of course! Does this card work with other CUDA apps on OSX?

But there's no warning in v8.01 for the GTX 480 which isn't officially supported. I don't have the GTX 580 yet, but I assume other CUDA apps would work with it ok just as the 480 (same driver I believe). Will 4xx/5xx support come soon from BMD?

In my opinion you are assuming too much... But is only an opinion

I'm wondering about support for Windows cards in Lion and other places. Basically, I can't afford a Quadro at the moment, but I want to get my hands on a single slot CUDA card too.

I also want to use it in an actual Mac Pro, not a Hackintosh, if that matters. And yes, Resolve and Adobe products is what I want to use it with.

Where is a good place to read up on all this?

Geforce 500 cards are not supported on Mac OS X yet. Good news is that there are workarounds/hacks to get them to work in Lion. In fact, it is much simpler in Lion than in SL. Bad news is drivers and particularly OpenGL is broken and some apps (Resolve included) will be unstable or extremely slow. Lot of information at netkas.org forums - a member called Rominator has posted reports and guides for GTX 560, 570 and 580 on Lion. There's information on tonymacx86 too, although it is more Hackintosh oriented. Anyway, I don't think anyone will recommend using GTX 580 on OS X yet - better to stick with an officially supported GPU.

By the way, these cards are not "Windows cards", although they do work best on Windows. They work fine on a variety of OSes, including Windows and Linux distros. There's just no support for Mac OS X.

I thought the 5xx series is natively supported in Lion (via NVDAGF100Hal). You have to edit NVDAGF100Hal.kext and add the GPU device ID. See here;

But I'm still hesitant to get a 580 until someone has ACTUALLY had success with Reolve.

Don't waste your time and get gtx480, or wait luigi and gtx590.

Gtx580 is about 15% faster than gtx480 only.
