  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Anyone want to test some film stock emulation software for RED?

Very, very nice.

Thank you Nigel.

Windows version???

Do you plan to emulate discontinued filmstocks? I have been looking for ages to find a way to emulate Agfa XT.

Rocket support and storm rcx plug in. Thank you sir.

Perhaps Kodak will assert that they own a particular color space and gamma,
and therefore they own certain looks.

We would love to add discontinued film stocks.

To do it accurately we would need images of color charts all the way from underexposed black to overexposed white. I'm sure that these would exist somewhere...

Failing that, we could possibly put together a version from a single color chart. If anyone has any feel free to let me know.

The only thing I have access to is some very old unexposed Agfa XT 160. Could shoot a color chart, but I am sure the age of the film (17-18 years old) would affect the color chemistry?

My only experience with this is film that was 3 months out of date, which the lab tested strips of and found it to be fogged.

Having said that, maybe it would be an accurate representation of a 17 year old film stock :) Which could be really cool.

At the very least there would be grain information. If you're interested, PM me.

Wow...! That's a good one, Russ. Red RAW controls, and the use/update of the RMD will be a killer.

Thanks for the feedback Jake, it's constructive and appreciated.
We know that a stand-alone product will not just slot into everyone's workflow. This is just the first release of FilmConvert.
If there is sufficient interest, we'd love to make a plugin version using the same underlying technology.
Of the 4 plugin platforms you mentioned, which do you think would be the most important? And what did you think of the grain / color of the actual algorithm?

The samples I see are quite phenomenal in quality - the best I've ever seen. My vote is AE plugin, Resolve plugin and Windows compatibility.

Thanks Dave. Unfortunately, the most requested plugin in formats RCX and Davinci don't have plug in capability. It looks like Adobe and OFX are the front runners at the moment. FCPX when they add red support. And yes we'll be working on adding other camera support. Canon has been the most requested so far.

But when push comes to shove most DSLR shooters don't have $500 for a plugin - we Red and Epic producers do. Something to think about - I mean the plugin would cost more than half as much as a 7D. Besides, the line skipping would make correct texture nay impossible, and the low DR would make color matching impossible.

Hi Nils,

We are working on making the software available as various plugins... hopefully it won't take too long to do this. Black and White is coming, as are some other cool surprises :)

I agree that grain should be last and should be separate from the tonal portion - so we can, say, composite 3D renders with live greenscreen footage, THEN add grain to both.
