  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

TOIA & EPIC kill a spare 5 minutes.

I've been mounting my EPIC to a monopod but with the 50-150. This is way cooler, Toia is going to sell a lot of 300mm lenses for RED, I think.

At the end of the day. you only need three lenses, the 17-50 the 50-150 and the 300.... you can go shoot an awesome movie with those 3 lenses.

So true. But what is this mythical 50-150 of which you speak? I have heard tale of such a creature, but have never seen one in the wild.

The RED 50 to 150 f2.8 has been discontinued. Optically it's sensational, but mechanically it was a bit average, if you zoomed, the fstop would move slightly with it due to tight tolerances.. thick grease? i don't know...
But for the money, who really cared. I'm so glad we bought one before RED pulled it!
I'm just hoping that if they bring it back, they don't make it so damn heavy like the have with all there other lenses.

I tell you what I would like, a (short, small, light) 80 to 200 ZOOM 2.8.... that would really smash the big boys. I have that size lens in a CANON... but I don't want to be stuck with that shit manual focus system canon has, and having to swap mounts when ever I have to use it will eventually drive me nuts.

Wishful thinking :) If they don't then no big deal.

Playback is all i want now... Then I'm done. Extra done... I wont want anything more after that.

The NIKON mount for the RED One would have bent like a willow with the kind of weight on it.

This is why the deal for the titanium mount on EPIC -X was so generous.

It's also why I am glad RED is making Nikon and Canon mounts.

Thanks again Mark. Looks like you are having a blast...

I love what you can get with a motion camera on a monopod. This is my setup of choice. Can't wait to shoot an epic this way.

Beautiful footage Mark!

The closeup of the guy at the 2:20 mark is what sells the lens - it's tack sharp, even on the web!

Also, nice job on the focus. You just used the Bomb EVF to judge focus, I gather?

For adventure shooters it's a dream camera at 300 fps.

Having an adjustable iris is so overrated. Or self-adjusting for that matter. That could make for a new cinematic experience.

I hear ya about an 80-200. Have that in Nikon at 2.8 and it's great, which is why I am so wanting that RED Nikon electronic mount. Then I can use my 17-35, 28-70 and 80-200 the way they were meant to be used. Or, just have RED come out with some spectacular electronic glass that is portable, unlike the 18-85 beast.

This was badass Mark, especially so impromptu, thanks for posting. And yah, that lens performed admirably ... very impressive :)

Nice work. Jep, sometimes it is fun just sticking with one lens. You have to move a lot and work out the shots.
I did this today with my RED and a Canon 135mm F2 lens. All wide open and boom there is the mojo. Pulling Focus is hard as hell but when you nail it....

So keep your stuff coming. I'll back you up with my Epic in September mate.

Cheers
Tim

wow! amazing Mark! I really appreciate you posting this. Makes me salivate even more for my Epic :-)
Since it's "only" 2k in original size, would you post a 2k clip of it, even if it was like a 30 sec excerpt?

And yes to what Jim said and what you were saying...the 300mm is so underappreciated and awesome!!! Like you, I've owned it for years and never really used it, then finally a few months ago I decided to shoot a little short film entirely using the Red 300mm, on every shot. The result was pretty fun, you can see it here if you want http://4kfest.com/the-rook-moves/

The Nikon/Duclos PL 80-200 T2.8 is a BEAST! It's small, short, and light
