  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Playback options for EPIC-M as of now??

Maybe it's just me & my clients but I rarely check playback on set. I actually prefer not to do playback since it tends to slow production down. We never had playback when shooting film, only video dailies. I treat the Red the same way. Cover all your bases in pre-pro and shoot on through. There's something magical about reviewing what you shot afterwards. You either get it or you don't. I like that...

I just did a 6 day shoot with my Epic and we used the Nano Flash in case the client wanted to see playback. They were so impressed with the footage in the client monitor they never asked once.

We also built a hackentosh with Redrocket so as needed we would view the footage between set-ups.

Playback is definitely nice but there are many alternatives and workflows to work around it until it's functional.

Just got the BlackMagic Hyperdeck. Runs playback to client monitor. Cheapest, most effective solution I've found @ 400$

So the hyperdeck plays back quickly? ... no hassels.. Uncompressed files to big? does it make pro res.. or some other compressed play back file. How many drives do you go through per job.

Hyperdeck records uncompressed 10-bit 4:2:2, the data-rate should be 132MB/s (463GB/h) for 1080p 25fps. I also want to know if playback is instantly... Right now we are using the KiPro mini.

How do you power it?? I want to use it with red bricks. is that possible. And yeah, is the playback instantaneous.

I checked with Atomos for the Samurai, I think they have started shipping.

Play back is instant, the files are huge though. It is ac powered and has a built in rechargeable battery. Haven't had it on a job, only tests, but I anticipate having at least couple 128gb drives in rotation, quick reformat. It eats up gigs quick but if you're just using it for playback its not to big of a problem.

Yes, shipping. Limited at the moment, most dealers should be through back-orders and have stock next month.

I'll try to get hands on the hyperdeck to see if it playback footage on the go.

Between AJA and ATOMOS, I'll definitely go for ATOMOS Samurai. Sep 1st shipping.

i have a pix 240 on order and should be awesome knowing Sound devices, but one thing that Ki mini has going for it is file names are read by the ki from red so everything matches up

If we go at Normal speed, ( 24fps, 25 fps ), AjA's is the leader ( as of now ). BMD's also great for an option ( despite of its Uncompressed and also SSD ).

What about Highspeed ? Manually Up-Speeding ?

Pix240 is also worth to waiting for. More pricey than KiPro Mini ( around $ 2.5K ), but its have monitor On-Board. It can be an optional monitor for us to shoot with Epic.

Samurai, will be a great Video Monitoring, and also recording. Price around $ 1.6K.

For AjA's, no monitor on-board makes me think twice to purchase it.

I agree with Mark, stick with Transcoding files from RAW.

Just my 2cents.

Blackmagic Shuttle sucks....Had terrible problems on second day of use on set....It just refused to record...

That's a good question. Also, curious to know how it handles over- and under-cranking. Aside from that, the Ki Pro Mini seems like it could be a great solution for playback on set as well as getting quick dailies to edit with right away, bypassing the need for transcoding or having a Red Rocket handy during production.

Guys- the KI pro mini simply records the HD-SDI feed from the camera. It doesn't handle over or under cranking any differently than a tape deck. In other words, it records the real-time picture output of the camera. Timecode will only be good for shots taken at the project frame rate.
AJA have said that when playback is enabled in camera, the KI pro mini will be able to take the play/ stop flags in the HD-SDI stream to trigger recording also, so that is how slo-mo shots will record slo-mo to the KI Pro mini.
Hopefully it will be easy (one touch) to toggle the record trigger on the KI Pro Mini from the camera record flag, to playback flag, and back, so that the KI Pro Mini doesn't make a new file every time a shot is played back...
