The EPIC Ops guide, in usual friendly Red style, lists the pinouts and connector part number for the EPIC power Lemo mating connector. It even goes so far as to offer do's and don'ts for those of us fabricating cables.

Unfortunately when I speak to my rep at Lemo to buy connectors, I'm told that they're Red exclusive, and that I can't purchase them. It may just be an oversight, but there's a slightly conflicting message going on here. Any advice?

I talked to my sales rep at Abel and he said they also cannot get the Epic lemos. I may just cannibalize a 2b-to 1b power adapter cable to rebuild my AB plates.

The guy I get cables through here was told there's a 12 week wait from the factory on that connector - so they may not be "Red exclusive", but perhaps Red has bought the entire production run for a little while...?

It is a standard LEMO connector.. not unique to us. You can get them from your distributor when they have stock, but please, be careful. We have seen more damaged Epic-s from bad wiring on this cable than anything else.

Thanks Jarred - Lemo's UK office were convinced they weren't allowed to sell it to me. Alan Piper had the same info too...? Mind if I refer them by email to you, or someone else at Red HQ?

Don't worry about my wiring - I'm a professional ;)

To follow up on what Jarred said, yes you can place an order with LEMO, but I'd still recommend that you consider purchasing a pre-fabricated cable assembly from RED - even if you then chop one end of the cable off - as the smaller barrel of the 1B LEMO and makes fabrication significantly more difficult.

I appreciate the advice Stuart, I forget that not everyone has my experience with fabrication, electronics etc. More than anything I was just surprised at the message from Lemo. Thanks for the input though :)

I'm going to echo their recommendations. If one has experience fabricating cables... go for it. It's a LEMO. But if somebody is considering their first soldering adventure to be a power cable for their camera... don't do it! Pay a few extra bucks and have one made or buy a prefabricated cable. The Epic power connector LEMO has two small pins for communications that are very close to the power pins... and accidentally bridging them with solder would let all the magic smoke out of the camera. No bueno.

Wires, hah.

We do wires :)

Just heard the Epic DC Lemo is 'custom' not an off the shelf plug or socket.
And now impossible to get, lemo is out of stock or very low worldwide.

Really? Even Jarred said it was a standard one. Reminds me of when Lemo USA didn't have the double ended barrel connector that Lemo UK did have for connecting two Red One DC cables. It may not be a connector they sell by the millions, but it would make very little sense that it was a custom job.

Went through this in some detail with Lemo and Red a while ago- the connector is not proprietary, but its a special order low-volume connector. Last I checked it was a 7 week wait and a price tag equal to half what Red charge for an assembled cable adapter.

It's standard, no custom connectors on the camera.

LEMO is always out of stock on many of their connectors; typically the obscure ones and the ones that are in high demand. I wouldn't be surprised if RED has secured most of their production quantity for that particular connector. At least for the foreseeable future. They have a lot of EPIC-X cameras to build and ship, and power accessories to go with them...
