  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Is there a Quick Release/Quick Mounting system for the EPIC LCD?

I would say the only design element that doesn't thrill me (yet) with the EPIC is the fixed mounting system of the LCD - the way that the LCD has to be screwed in directly to a plate or mount with mounting screws - I much preferred mounting to rods via a clamp and being able to move the monitor around a bit on the noga arm.

I can't quite get my arms around what all these rosettes and various bones do - is there a solution there?

Anyone have any interesting mounting solutions for the touch-screen LCD?

Or are there any in the works that I ought to be paying attention to?

It would be great to be able to whip this thing on and off the camera without an allen wrench.

Zucuto's quick release system is pretty awesome.

You don't happen to have a link, do you Tom? I always find their mounting accessory product line a little confusing: Z-this and Z-that. Or even better, a link to one in use on an actual EPIC?

I've looked at all of the QR mounts for the RED LCDs which I could find, and the base of the mounting structure for the EPIC LCD is different from the RED ONE LCD, it's multi-screw, not single screw (though you could use a single screw, it's not that stable). I'm hesitant to buy any of the RED ONE QR systems for an EPIC without seeing them actually used/applied to an EPIC LCD. I like the CineLock suggested by Dan, it's inexpensive, but it seems to fall into that category of single-screw mounting.

I'm hoping something pops up specific to the EPIC design in the RED accessories thread today - something that will let me mount this bad boy directly to a plate using two screws, without a wrench.

We've got the Epic LCD bolted to the top handle which then goes on the swat rail. I believe RED will make available soon what is basically a cheese block that goes on the swat rail... So you can fix the LCD to it with at least two bolts and have it slide onto the swat rail. That's the official product anyway, I'm sure there's at least half a dozen third party ideas - the Hydra clamp is a great starting point.

Meryem -

I'm with you, both on the specific need (although I've only played with an EPIC, will not own until I get my X) and more importantly, the general overwhelm of different parts, pieces, jargon, acronyms and buzzwords to describe them. As we prepare also for our X, we're selling off old accessories and pieces and buying new and the accessory and mounting department is pretty darn dense! I am also pretty hesitant to buy accessory systems without physically holding them...or seeing enough images and descriptions to really get my head wrapped around them.

It would be more than awesome if we had a thread with people posting in some detail photos and descriptions of the various parts and pieces they are using, perhaps.

well, as soon as I get my extra battery plate rigged properly, I will post pics of my lightweight set-up...

the only thing it will be missing is, ah, a quick-release LCD system

Plus 1 on that idea. I too am not thrilled with the mounting system on the LCD.

I use a magic arm for the LCD. That way I can position it anyhow I need.

BTW that's the magic arm I got with my SmallHD DP6.

Then I will stop the pestering and be patient...very excited to hear this. You da man, Jim!

While I have your ear - as I've been re-building my EPIC for a documentary project (still waiting on a few deliveries of items), I have one other teensy weensy request - can you all build a smaller, lighter top handle in a t-bar configuration that runs horizontally/perpendicular to the camera, rather than the fore/aft design that currently exists for all RED handles - this would let me top mount a wireless mic and an onboard light and would even remove a bit of weight...

When the camera is this small and light, I don't need my whole hand on the camera handle, I just to "four-finger" it (which is what I find I do anyway, with my old RED ONE top mount)...a smaill t-bar would allow more room to top-mount essential doc stuff and put the weight in the center of the handle, rather than at the end.

The current fore/aft handle design doesn't allow me to mount anything on either side of the handle, so it chews up all the mounting room on top.

In another random tidbit, I did receive my RED mattebox yesterday, and it is absolutely perfect for this application - it's super light and functional for what I'm going to shoot. Excited to pound on it a bit.

Just a couple more widgets, and I'll never ask for another thing. This camera is so sweet. The images blow my mind daily. Seriously, even mundane things look amazing.

Meryem, Z-I Don't know why zou have trouble with Zacuto zaccessories. Zhey seem pretty z-traightforward to me... (my favorite one is the "Zangle" or "Zeddie Wedgie." Come on guys...)

The simplest thing to do is to have the universal top mount and then you can attach the viewfinder to the top rails...then you can slide the monitor back and forth to a desired position (you need a longer EVF/LCD cable though)

I've mounted the LCD to the side handle - holds well, 360 degree rotation. M
