  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

What is EPIC?

Sorry... I don't buy that. There weren't any other companies that were saying that they were releasing a 4K camera in 2006 when we announced. We were alone at the time.

I don't think you can name one company, let alone 10.

Jim

It's fun to point that out and all but it's also important to remember that most of those claims were made back when there were like 10 other groups saying they were making cameras like the red one, it just so happens red was the only company that wasn't full of it.

This should be know by every one.....

I feel EPIC-X is just around the corner....hummmmmmmmm.....can't wait

EPIC is being built by an American company that was initially called a scam.

EPICs are built in the USA (California actually).

EPICs have more resolution than any digital motion capture camera... at 120fps.

EPICs have more dynamic range than you need natively... and HDRx if you need more. More than any other camera including film.

EPIC is the size of a Hasselblad... which shoots one frame a second BTW.

EPIC is upgradeable. Actually... it is also the upgrade.

EPICs are shooting most every major budget feature film for every studio.

EPIC is shipping. It is not a figment of the imagination. Almost 1000 EPICs are in the wild.

EPIC is not finished. And EPIC customers don't bleed when things get better. Most every upgrade is free. As is REDCINE-X.

EPIC footage looks like 65mm film on the big screen (without grain).

EPIC costs less to own than any other professional motion capture camera.

EPIC is the least expensive professional motion camera to shoot. Thanks to REDCODE and SSDs.

EPIC is the least expensive and easiest professional motion camera to post.

EPIC is the smallest and lightest professional motion camera. By a lot.

You can extract "Getty worthy" still images from an EPIC motion stream.

EPIC images are IMAX capable.

I like EPIC. I love the EPIC development team.

Jim

EPIC-S will initially be available from RED... Lake Forest and Pinewood, UK. We will add resellers as we go.

Jim

Oh, hurrah! My RED FedEx package ist arriving today - RED sent it 10 days ago.
And I'm not at the southpole, I'm in Germany.

Mr Jannard,
I know that building & delivering EPIC-X, EPIC-S, Scarlet, along with new accessories - are currently top priority.
But what about the promised RED Dragon sensor?

But what about the promised RED Dragon sensor?

It was stated at NAB 2011 that the RED Dragon sensor was just being announced and that all other details wouldn't be released until they are ready to ship. All we know is that it will be available late 2012 and all EPIC-M & EPIC-X cameras will be upgradable to the RED Dragon sensor for a small upgrade price. That's all that has been announced.

Public info we have regarding the DRAGON sensor:

A new sensor available as an upgrade to your EPIC-M or EPIC-X brain (one of the few instances where a RED upgrade is not free). It is currently set for a release in 2012. No detailed specs released for the sensor. The NAB announcement was merely to let people know that RED is already thinking "What next after next?".

In short: The DRAGON is to EPIC as what the M-X was to the RED One.

I'm not talking 4k specifically but rather affordable cinema cameras.

At the moment I can only remember that one with the hand crank that started with a k, 10 may be an exaggeration if one were to research my claim but I also think the idea that Most big budget movies are being shot on epic is also an exaggeration.

I switched from Sony to RED three years ago, which feels like decades: so many improvements, upgrades and options and Epic being the biggest and most anticipated amnong all of them. I'm glad for making the choice back then as this allowed me to achieve superior images and save money.

Well time only can tell them the future is 4K. Eventually there is no choice/room given by Red to settle less isn't it?

Jim, I look forward to finally peering through my Epic-X. These threads help the wait and remind me of early Red One days right before the storm hit . Thanks

My BAD your right
And it blows me away its the best handheld camera you can find anywhere.
2D and 3D

Luis

Big Lu,

It probably looks about the size of a sugarcube in your hands buddy. :)

BBBBBBBEEEEEEEERRRRRRRLLLLLLLLIIIIIIINNNNNNN (Berlin)
please!

I 2nd that. Berlin really needs to get RED support and a RED distributer!
Actually we´re shooting the first german feature film on EPIC. A lot of people told us not to shoot on RED, because of problems with support. Germany is conservative minded ARRI Land. You can get support from them 24/7, whereever you are. RED should offer service like that in Germany...

Still proud of you. And and proud to be part of this family.

Dito. It was a long long wait but always worth it. I feel like 3.5 years ago, when I got my first RED. Checking out the Forum every day and getting goosebumps of the new stuff.
RED changed a lot in my life. I will never forget that.

Happy to be a part of it.

Tim

Tim,

You are right. RED in the hands of everyone. Everyone capturing the same quality.

But it is more. I found that RED got people interested in and talking about making films. It creates community. RED helped me get to know some really great people in my own city and beyond. I have met many REDusers personally. It's opened doors (for people like Tom Lowe for example) and it's always an interesting discussion. Not just "techie talk" but film talk.

The whole idea of owning a RED is being part of a new idea. That is the interesting side effect of getting involved in this technology.

I'll be part of the RED family as soon as you tell use RED Scarlet Fixed is available...

When you buy RED, you become part of the family.
