Has there been any thought of offering an optional body upgrade price of ($????) to Stage 2,3 and 3.5 for those that would prefer a machined Epic-M brain in place of the Epic-X?

How many of you would be interested?

Nope.

If I wanted M I would buy M.

I bought X I am waiting for X.

my bigger question is:

Why would RED even do this? It seems like work for them.
They make and M they make an X you can buy either.
Pick.

Aside from how it's made, there will be no visible or functional difference in the cameras, aside from the 2 year warranty. I'm sure they'll stop production on Ms once the X program starts...

I wouldn't be so sure.

The chance to upgrade the brain to a more durable housing would be attractive to some. Especially those who intended to upgrade to the Red Dragon sensor in a year or two.

Buying an Epic-M package is not necessarily worthwhile for those of us who already own SSD drives and a Bomb EVF. However, upgrading the X to an M brain makes sense to me. :001_smile:

No difference in durability worth speaking about; they're pretty much the same material, just machined instead of cast AFAIK. Either way they're tough as old boots was my impression on picking one up.

And yes, why would RED entertain such a notion? You want M, you buy M. You want X, you buy X.

Now there is a first -- I have never heard an Epic likened to 'old boots'. With all my respect Mike, I think your analogy is off a tad.

Jon, maybe it's 'two nations divided by a common language'; in British English, 'tough as old boots' is a very common expression meaning 'very tough indeed; practically indestructible'.

I could use the equally common expression 'built like a brick shithouse' which means exactly the same thing if you prefer :)

Mike

Mike is right, though... No difference in durability between M and X. In fact, X will look and act the same as M, no one will know the difference unless they flip it over to look at the serial # and go, "oh, it's an M!". Well, it does say "EPIC-M" on the top plate, just over the lens mount.

Jim said a while back that they will continue to make the M's as long as people want to buy them. Once EPIC-X is shipping on demand and all back-orders are fulfilled, there really won't be any practical advantage to buying an M over an X. But I guess they will continue to make and sell them if people want to buy them...

Warranty on the M is 2 years. We don't know if the X will have a 2 year warranty or not, I've always assumed it will be 1 year, like the RED One, but we won't know for sure until RED starts selling them.

Peter,

When you say you have the bomb and other parts it helps me understand why youd ask about this.

It might not be to hard to get your side plates made in machined aluminum.

In terms of durability. If it's what the R1 is made of then it's going to because very rugged little box. I actually think that material is more rugged than anodized aluminum which can wear a bit differently.

I think you mean the X won't have a 2 year warranty. M does -- it's in the sales contract / purchase agreement thing and still says so on the EPIC-M product page where you order. :)

Mike

And it carries a completely different meaning if you are talking about a bad steak you had in a restaurant.
:)

M is for those who want it now and not stuck to the Japan supply issue...

My guess is that once the Epic X run is done up to and including Stage 4 and the Epic S and Scarlet go into production, Epic X cameras purchased after January 2012 will be handmade. The announced price increase along with the experience acquired by the current builders should make this more feasible for lower demand type manufacturing. I suspect those same technicians will be the ones doing the Dragon sensor upgrade.

The Epic S and the Scarlets will be the large volume cameras in the future and will require the higher production assembly lines, IMO.
