  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Anyone want to test some film stock emulation software for RED?

In terms of a plugin, I would think it makes sense to consider this as a tool used in the last stage of post and probably should support something like Resolve. Then again, some people finish in their NLE, so you probably would need to support those as well if you want to access the most people. But if I had to pick, I would say Resolve.

Hi Nigel, had a play.

Pros - Very easy to use, distinct effect, relatively fast
Cons - Direct from R3D means we either grade properly, using the vast controls of Resolve, RCX etc. or jam our beautiful R3d through Film Convert and that's it.

As Jake pointed out and you responded to, this really needs to be a plugiin that can be used at the end of a proper grading process to be of true use. Having said that, I was able to get a pretty good look very quickly.

My understanding is that RCX will have a plug-in structure. For me RCX and Resolve would be the top 2 successes for plug-in sales, simply because at FREE and $999, RCX and Resolve will be on the most workstations around the world very soon!

Keep us informed, really like what you're doing here.

+1

I would also suggest a plugin for RedCine-X and Resolve. Most people who are finishing in a NLE probably use rather a Sapphire or RedGiant plugin. Of course it would be great to have FilmConvert also in Premiere Pro or an other NLE, but that should have a lower priority.

PLEASE make this a plugin for Eyeon FUSION.

Also, a Windows stand-alone version should ALWAYS be available too.

My only question.

Why three different choices for R3d files. If you work with R3D does it mena you have to know (or remember) what sensor the footage was shot on?

Hi David, that is actually just us collecting data on which platforms to support. Internally, FilmConvert will detect the type of RED footage and apply the appropriate LUTs. Ie there is only one RED version of FilmConvert.

I should mention that we had not anticipated anyone wanting to process non-mx Red one footage, and so the software is not optimized for that. It will work but not be 100% accurate. I guess we just assumed everyone was on MX sensors. We will be adding non-mx support asap.

interested in stocks from earlier periods , 60's , 70's
we'd love to do that. however we'd need to shoot some charts on the stocks...

if anyone has a set of scanned macbeths going from blown out to black in old film stocks, we could do it though.

I bought a copy of Monkey Extract and paid good money for it.

I never got a released copy, it was always in beta.

Now you guys want more money for an upgrade?

Any things you guys make from now on?

Please count me out.

I really feel like I got scammed.

The 'beta' tag is something we never removed from Monkey Extract, but is a fully finished product used in hundreds of post houses around the world.

If you think buying a copy of a product entitles you to free access to all future products form that company, you're entitled to that opinion :)

When I downloaded it I didn't realize it was for MACS only.
Perhaps you should mention MAC only on the download page.

Also, what about system requirements info?

Just trying to be helpful.......because I love film grain. :)

People are asking for an ability to use Film Convert as a Resolve plugin or for this matter other plugins as well. Unfortunately BM so far hasn't provided any type of framework for the plugin architecture on Resolve, so until they do so, all this talk of various plugins for Resolve is just an idle talk. Right now the only way to introduce any type of grain structure in Resolve has to be done with something similar to Cinegrain.

So far we have the following votes for plugin platforms:

5 - Davinci
3 - Redcine X
1 - Scratch
1 - Eyeon Fusion
1 - Baselight
1 - Lustre

If you do an OFX compliant plugin, you should be able then produce plugins for Nuke, Toxik (Maya Composite), Fusion, Sony Vegas, Scratch, Baselight, Film Master, Mistika...

Thanks Jake, I will look into OFX.

hey martin, good call, I will add that to the download page.

Downloaded it - LOVE it! Want more film stocks :) I really understand and appreciate the concept. The grain looks very realistic. I own and use CineGrain a lot, but I like the curve and color characteristics imparted by FilmConvert.

Putting my vote in for RCX and AE

Nigel,

The results on your site look pretty good. I've guess I've been conditioned to appreciate the look of film, and while digital color looks great in it's own right, it's never quite lived up to my expectations. Having this flexibility is a step in the right direction.

It's been getting steadily better with the new sensors and color science, but your last example in broad daylight shows where film still shines. Look how the skin on the girl is more white and the pink of her shirt is more white as well. And look at shadow saturation in the man's face. Color stays rich into the shadows on his skin around the eye sockets.

Graeme did something pretty important with RedLogFilm, that addressed some of these issues. RedLogFilm was a huge improvement. Are you building on that color, or are you starting from RGB from the sdk... point being that I think Graeme did something pretty low level with RedLogFilm to address the highlight/shadow saturation issues and building a transform on top of that one might be something to look into.

+1 for resolve, and integration into all NLE's and compositing software would be nice too. not sure how you would get it into resolve though, but ideally I think it should function as a tabbed window in your color room where you tab between hsl, curves, etc. there you can choose "camera, film stock, etc" hopefully maybe you guys can contact BM and work out a deal to integrate this. would be a stellar feature.

also when you guy start releasing more processing for different cameras, are you selling those as individual license, or if we buy a license, it's good for all camera versions?

As it is, tabs in Resolve are way out of hands. BM really need to rethink the whole interface thing. Lustre has the same one window philosophy, even older design, than Resolve, yet, it's way more efficient.

I don't mind paying for working released Software, and paying a little more for future upgrades.

Monkey Extract Beta never work for my long form "Features" projects.

I was hoping to get a working release version that I paid for.

I never did.

Customer support is next to none also.

Yes, My opinion is you guys scammed the money from me.

No one here should be scam out of more money on software that never get finish and release.
