  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I gotta say I'm with Billy on this one Thomas. There is an art to pulling focus that can no more be duplicated than Pro Tools instruments can be used to replace a live recording of Kenny G on the sax. A great focus puller can hit the eyelash instead of the pupil on a Master Prime close-up. Do you really think those nuances can be duplicated with electronic focus controlled remotely via Wi-Fi?

you are way behind guys. It's already happening-pulling focus off monitors. You still need the skill to pull focus- you just get more help. I don't think the pullers will be replaced by SW but they will be faster and more precise with the aids. Guessing from the emails I get about the Nikon mount a lot of guys can't wait to start....

We know it is already happening Jacek. Our comments were addressed to how well it is being done considering the obvious limitations. There are latency issues, resolution issues, UI issues and on and on. It's not even close to being where it needs to be yet for great work.

Also, there's a big difference between pulling focus "off of a monitor" an trying to pull focus on an iPad over Wi-Fi.

Got my Epic M today, many thanks to the guys at Pinewood for helping me out - looking forward to shooting.

Jarred watch out for my Epic M pic, i've told Alan Piper what i was planning and he said you'll love it. ;-)

Pulling focus is an "anticipatory" (is this a word?) operation so even with zero latency is too late.. unless we can advance few seconds into the future... who knows what's cooking in the Red labs

Been discussed in a few places already. Trade-in as part of Stage 3 is $17,500 irregardless of the sensor installed.

You can see EPIC-M at Pinewood and we can show some footage, but not projected 4K - we will be showing that at REDucation here in September...

Babelsberg is nearby (where Tarantino shot 'Inglourious Basterds', Polanski

And there's a building in the middle of the city which is empty and would be perfect
for studios, the Airport Tempelhof! (1,2 km long!!! Hangars up to 40 m in height
and a building area of 307.000 m²) And they are still looking for investors!

$12,335 Additional Cost to match M which does not include an additional warranty. But if you stick with X, then you get the Pro Battery Module and the Module Adapter for free, along with everything else.

So buy an M today and pay $58,000 or wait for your X and pay $30,585 for the same package minus the additional warranty but plus the 2 modules. (this is with the RedOne MX $1250 discount applied)

FYI, the Epic-X Stage II cost is $48,050 if you BOIL out the free accessories. To match the M package, we can remove the Battery Pro Module ($1250) and the Module Adapter ($300) so actually it's $46,500 total worth of gear. A $11,500 difference between the M package...


If you're a single shooter, it might make more financial sense to just wait for your X camera but if you want an Epic TODAY and anticipate having 2 cameras in the future, then it makes sense to get an M today. The 2 year warranty and being able to have it RIGHT NOW may be worth that additional $28,000 difference

I wonder what will happen when all these X cameras are out there in the wild. Right now rates for an M package are around 1500-1800 per day. I imagine with all those X cameras, rental rates are going to drop quickly but then again, the cost of the X package will remain high. Stage-2 buyers are getting the best deal so we should keep that in mind when we charge our clients. The camera system is not a $20k camera.. It's a $40k+ camera and rental rates should be adjusted as such.

You can send money to RED to be held in your RED account at anytime. But we cannot specifically allocate to a Stage 4 purchase until we start the reservation process Jim says will start by end of year.

Question: If one orders the Epic-M package now, what sort of wait time is there on some of the included (but perhaps backordered) accessories?
Such as the Redvolts, Bomb EVF, Side Handle, etc.

Jarred posted in another thread that if you order M package now, you should have your BOMB EVF by Sept. The REDmote and DSMC side handle, much smaller queue so sooner than that for them.

Brent,

I've had a BOMB EVF on order since January. My stage 2 EPIC X will hopefully ship in September, so will my BOMB EVF be available then or before then?

My understanding is that BOMB EVFs were shipping first to those who ordered the original EVF, then by order number after that. I don't understand why EPIC M customers would get their BOMB EVFs before other customers.

Or will all back orders be filled by September?
