Hi All

I thought I would start a thread on the Society of Motion Pictures and Television Engineers trade show thats on this week in Sydney Australia.

Its on every second year and its like a little NAB. If anyone wants to share thoughts and views on the show please use this thread.

Ill be there Thursday..

One thing I would like to see is the below...

Olympus Australia
Olympus is presenting the high speed video camera ISPEED which is able to capture images up to 1,000,000 fps. The camera is operated by separate control unit, making the system very flexible where software allows operators to analyse and enhance images. The ISPEED has been used to record high speed events in series such as Top Gear and Animal Planet.

Day 1 SMPTE just found the most amazing device for the EPIC or any other device.

http://www.atomos.com/samurai/

This is a small lightweight HDSDI recorder that takes 1080p and records PRORES in realtime for $1500 USD! Very cheap with a built in screen and works like a dream

The Ninja version is $1000 and records HDMI.

Sound Devices has a HDMI/HDSI version that records both Pro res and AVID DNX for $3K with analogue audio inputs!! Also a bargain. And the sound devices records native RED SDI so you also get the metadata!

Hey I am not a salesman but these 3 items I found very exciting.

I will be back at SMPTE Thursday so if anyone else found anything cool let me know so I can check it out.

I love the whole idea of the Samurai, When I first found out they were making these things a few months ago, I ordered two there and then.

Strap it on the back of the EPIC feed from the 10bit HDSDI BNC or even at the video village inline to a client monitor for instant playback. ,
I'll then be able to shoot RAW and REDLOG prores at the same time!!!!! YEHAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!
Aaaaaaaaaand. when play back is finally up and running from the EPIC, when you playback your 300fps clips through the camera, you press record and you have 300fps PRO RES as well.

These thing are going to sell like hot cakes!

FAN BLOODY TASTIC!

The Sound devices PIX 240 does, I am not sure about the Samurai...

Another great toy that I am going to buy is the steadicam TANGO. I am going to the Steadicam masterclass next week with Garret Brown who invented steadicam and we
are going to try and mount my EPIC M to it. This rig allows you to shoot from 1cm off the ground to 8 foot in the air within the same shot, allows you to shoot around corners and all other unusual ways. It has to be seen to be believed and just adds so much extra drama to scene.

I met Pawel Achtel yesterday also. Very nice guy..

Again if anyone else wants to meet up for a chat I will be around tomorrow walking around with a heap of people so the more the merrier! We normally meet up at 10am out the front and go in for a few hours, then go to YUM CHA for lunch, have a few beers, then back in again.. And after that... a few more beers.... So it will be a bit of fun.

Send me a PM or an email to adam at edenvideo dot com if you want to join us and I will give you my mobile number.

There are some now KINOFLO knock offs that looked amazing and pumped out so much light I couldn't look into the light! So I will share some more info about those as I have never seen so much light come out of a flourescent tube before. And if you can't make it.. let me know what you would like me to look at for you.

I will check in again to REDUSER tonight as I am out all day today

Gentlemen where was the stand with the Samurai recorder? I assume it records TC and audio as they are embedded but does it remotely trigger when the camera rolls??? I see on their website it has LANC control but that's a Sony Protocol and unsure that will help on an Epic. Wandering around SMPTE as I type so if I could only find the bugger.

I should add that only Pro Res recording is a concern with the long term viability of FCP at the top end of town in some doubt but hey its cheap.

What's that badboy cost and what's the right configuration for the Epic, especially since the Epic has its own monitor?

I believe it will be $10k for the jib, but you do need your own steadicam already. With steadicam you don't use the RED monitor at all, you use the steadicam one and plug the RED one in when you need to go into a menu.

I will take some pics of the EPIC on this rig next week on my course.

See below my EPIC M on my Archer 2 with G50arm.

Hi Tom

Its on the ATOMOS stand.. You can buy this from my mate Rob Floro at Videocraft for about $1500 + GST and you will need your own laptop drive or ssd. Or for $3K you can buy the Sound devices one from LEMAC and that records RED SDI with embedded metadata.. If you are really serious about PRORES from an EPIC the Sound Devices is the better option and had more inputs on it, and records AVID DNX also.

For me I need something cheap and nasty for the director to playback takes so the Samurai is perfect for me.

One last thing before i head off...

Also check out the Teradeck CUBE.. Its awesome.. Takes HDSDI and can run off a small battery and sends h.264 via wifi to an ipad/ computer for realtime video streaming.. Very cheap and the pics are OK.

They just need to figure out how to record the signal on an IPAD and play it back..

The stand is next to LEMAC and the company is called BLONDE ROBOT

It was good to catch up with you guys at the show.

There were couple of Epics, one on the Lemac stand and Mike Seymour was running around with one.

Did you see the Sony F65? When I approached the Sony dude and mentioned that it is good to see a 4k camera from Sony, he started bagging the Red One, saying that it is doing interpolation and does not resolve 4k. He also said that the Epic does not resolve 4k and no one managed to get it working without a problem for more than 2 hours. Anyway, I just ignored that and asked about some features...which Sony seems to be lacking, such as exchangable mount, compressed RAW, modularity, etc....he said that I had specialised and unique requirements.
Anyway, the F65 is huge. Did you see the size of it?

I have the Atomos Ninja with a Samurai on order as it's by far the better option. If it works as flawlessly as the Ninja does I'll be extremely happy indeed. The Samurai will record embedded TC which is a massive feature too I was told. Currently the included batteries let the Ninja run for over 5 hours recording and one 500gb drive lasts 5hr 45m shooting Prores HQ 1080p. It's tiny, self contained and bolts straight onto rails or whatnot, brilliant product. The screen is shithouse though and only good as reference and useless in sunlight, the Samurai is going to be substantially better. It's also not going to be available for at least another month or longer.
There's other great options out there like the sound devices unit coming but at 2-3 times the price...for one I'll be swapping out the Ninja for the Samurai and waiting to spend that extra $ on the Prores module from RED for my coming EPIC...but that's me.

I saw the epic for the first time today. hard to believe how small it really is. what an amazing piece of equipment.

Checked out the Samurai and Sound Services recorder and both look very good. Sound Services looks more robust with more input options and features. The downside is the Sound Services machine is a little heavier and larger albiet with a better screen but twice the price. The best feature for me is it's ability to read the Red metadata and name it's files the same as the cameras recorded R3Ds. Instant high quality rushes at the end of the shoot. :hurray::hurray::hurray:A fantastic feature for taking the wind out of the sails of Alexa.

The Samurai can also record the camera output including the Epic 108025p but presently not able to mirror file names but I spoke to the Atomos guy and he believed that the feature could be incorporated into future updates. Well worth giving Atomos feedback on how awesome this feature would be and how it would make it the logical choice for almost all Red users.

One near future update will be support for Avid codecs and the design of both machines create the possibly of other codecs being incorporated.

Another great aspect is that it's a Melbourne based company that should be responsive and fast for service.
