Alright, this movie was beautiful in many ways... saw it in the IMAX, which was incredible. From a visual standpoint, I enjoyed the effects and the grading the most.

I've also decided that I don't have a big problem with stereo-3d for blockbuster films...

Anyone else have thoughts on the closing of the series?

Uggh. It's a conversion? I thought they were going to shoot this in S3D from the get go ...

I saw it in 2d, because conversions don't warrant seeing it in 3d.

That said, loved the movie, great finale.

Both part 1 and 2 were shot at the same time I believe, with Arri cams and Kodak film stocks.
Then the Avatar success came and they wanted to convert the 1st part, but i believe that because clash of titans had so negative regarding the conversion, they wanted to make it right and not rush it. So part 1 didnt had time enough to make it good and they aborted. But they said that part 2 was still on track to be cOnverted.

I am sure it also has a lot to do with the DOP, Eduardo Serra, a great DOP. He is a personal friend, and I hope one day he shoots something on an EPIC... My EPIC...ehehehehe

I will go see the 2d version. I don't like the 3d picture window look like in Avatar. I find it distracting. I go to see the 3d version when it's something like My Bloody Valentine in 3d, or Piranha in 3d, where they are going to throw stuff at you in 3d. THAT makes the 3d worthwhile and fun, otherwise I prefer the 2d version.

I actually have to disagree Shawn. In some of the tests I've seen, conversions have at times been superior to captured stereo. While it plays a BIG factor who and where and for what price it is done, if it's done "correctly" it can give you a whole lot of control over the stereo image that you'd never have, and obviously eliminates quite a bit of hassle and such on set. Course some of the stuff that gets outsourced is garbage, but what isn't?

There's been a lot of you-know-what on this subject passed through the professional loop. I remember reading articles praising captured over conversion and using converted shots as examples... That being said, there is obviously a difference in the two approaches, and I'm not necessarily recommending one over the other because there are a lot of variables. I just hope that stereographers don't discount it's true value to fix problem shots and do things that are either impossible or impractical for a project.

You might be right Paul, but the science of shooting in stereo is young and advancing very rapidly ... and maybe the same can be said for conversions, but I've just never yet seen a conversion I've been impressed by.

Maybe this one looks good, but in general it's been disappointing. So have some of the 3D "shot" films I've seen, but I guess I'm forgiving about that because it will be the primary way of doing 3D going forward and evolving fast.

I have seen almost every Potter movie at the midnight showing except for this one. Im waiting for my trip to Chicago to see it in Imax at Navy Pier.

Should be worth the wait.

I'll see it tomorrow.

All cinemas in Zürich have it only in 3D. The conversions I've seen so far have been terrible, but I'll wait and see.

Matt

Hopefully that Harry Potter serial is virtually DEAD or the last one can roll out anyway but...

Rest in peace Harry .... :biggrinjester:

Saw it yesterday with the family (2D) and loved it! Does not disappoint. 8 films, what a ride!

definitely worth the wait... imax is awesome.

This confuses me... IMAX 3D is a 2K digital projection like everyone else.. Can't stand the linear-polarized glasses, where your can't tilt your head very far. Only advantage to IMAX I've seen is the larger screen in some instances, but it's usually not much larger and many films get cropped to take advantage of the height of the screen.

Sorry.. Just venting a bit.

I watched Batman: The Dark Knight on a 70mm IMAX print. The opening scene was breathtaking. The aspect ratio switched during the movie. The Blu-ray has the same behavior.

Can anyone spot the scenes in Avatar where they used 2D to 3D conversion? ;-) I suspect every 3D movie has done it. If you are not happy with the way a scene turned out, use one eye and create the other through the magic of software.

It was such a dark movie... I couldn't see hardly any detail with 3d sunglasses on! and the 3d was... well... not really there. There was a couple of shots that stood out, but what a waste of time to be honest.

Went and saw it again last night n 2d, (because I disappointingly fell asleep at the end of the first viewing) It was so much more satisfying see it without stressed, sore eyes and the ND on the glasses not stealing so much light.

Overall: Fantastic art direction, best dragon effects ever, bit slow as movies go... and the ending was well, very weak for a 7 part movie. But over all not a waste of money, still worth seeing, but do yourself a favour, save your money and see it in 2d. You'll see more with less eye stress.

I still haven't seen a 3d movie that surpasses AVATAR for 3d excellence. Other than true 3d animated films like toy story. But live action 3d seems to be so.... nothing unless the makers of the film put some 3d objects in it.

Is 3d really worth the extra 25% of the cost of the film to make it.
Full 3d animated films, YES!!!
3d live action movies... I personally say, save your money and put the extra 25% of post and shooting costs into better actors, better locations, better art department and make your movie 25% better!

my two cents worth.

yep... like i said, there was a bunch of disrespect even among professionals towards conversion techniques and projects until someone started to realize it wasn't completely worthless...

and every time i've been to the imax it's been awesome. bigger screens just call to me, i love the field of vision.

Just came home from a showing today. I liked the flick, and the audience seemed to like it too. The emotions of the audience was kind of in harmony, like collective sighing at the break :)
The 3D conversion has been done nicely, they have done a great job avoiding a cardboard effect and other headache-inducting stuff.
Still, many scenes aren't very 3D-y so you´ll not miss much if you're going to see it in 2D IMO.
I feel that they kinda had 2 separate endings, but it's the same in the books and it's handled quite nicely (trying to avoid spoilers here ...)
