I just got my Epic this week , and I'm wanting to get a backpack that will hold an epic and 2 or 3 RPP lenses. Along with batteries, cables, LCD, etc. Any suggestions? I'm looking for the best of the best since it's going to be quite an expensive load. :) This is so I can run around grabbing 5K cinema wherever I go!

That might be a bit heavy with all that glass - I worry for your back! But I've certainly done it with just one lens, handle, batteries, travel charger, SSD reader and laptop. That's certainly do-able. I used my Kata DSLR bag, and that is one strong and long lasting bag, but not quite right for your purpose I think.

Well, I'm thinking of just having 2 lenses, might be getting a RPZ, and throw in one of my RPP's. I don't plan on putting a laptop in the bag, but just Epic gear.

I've got the Kata DSLR bag and have used it heavily for the last couple of years. It stands up to a lot of wear and tear. I've use it to carry (no boos now) my Canon 5D HDSLR kit. It hold the body, two lenses 10 batteries, FF, filters, loupe, sennheiser transmitter/reciever, and a bunch of other odd items. Epic just about doubles the body size from the 5D, but I still think it would probably be one of the best choices out there.

I'm going down to LA on Tuesday to pick-up my Epic-M, so I can let you know how well it fits on Wed or Thurs. However, those are BIG-ass lenses.

I definitely recommend the Kata line of backpacks. As Paul has already said, they hold up. They stay comfortable. Their support is terrific. (Incidentally they make Israeli army gear, including armored vests -- their military spec experience carries right through to the civilian line) I've own 7 Kata bags, some for over 12 years -- and every one of them is still in use. I used one of their backpacks (I think it was the 206 rucksack) for my light weight Red setup which is not light weight.

I suggest going with still lenses. I recommend Nikons 14-24 and 24-70 both f2.8. Or the 17-55...just one lens

Yeah, that would be nice Jacek, except this if for an Epic and they are not shipping a Canon or Nikon lens adapter for that yet.
Or do you have some inside info we all want to hear?! :bigear:

I don't have any Red inside info, however I do have quite reliable OptiTek inside info...:wink5:

After lots of looking, testing and going from store to store....i ended up equipping myself with the WALLMART soft cooler for $17.88 I can keep my epic fully rigged inside of it and use foam at both ends to protect it....i looked at everyrhing that was at the local shops in San Diego....from $100 to $400 and think tanks; lowpro etc....nothing quite excited me for a pack around case in a boat or hiking like that wallmart cooler.
...oh, i did pick up a lowpro backpack for my dslr though that was perfect for what i wanted it for.

....now i could have found a nice case that would allow me to pack the epic in pieces...but i wanted something that allowed me to store the camera fully loaded and equipped to shoot....see an event, pull it out, turn it on and shoot.

Ive searched high and low.

This is what ive gone with and I like it very much.

What rocks is
I carry my Laptop in a specific pouch for it.
My EPIC with a RPZoom 17-50
SSD cards LCD, cables
laptop cables small portable drive for dumping to
and has space for another 2 lenses small to possibly medium lenses.

Also positive about it is it has a rolling function.

I will admit that its a heavy load and not very fun to backpack with but doable.

Good luck.

I have been flying and traveling with all these bags for over 20 years. Kata zippers fail. It has happened three times so far. Tenba, zippers also have problems over time and with heavy use. Tamarac, for consumers, don't bother. Porta-brace generally hold up, but a real target to thieves. The best of the best...THINK TANK....very very happy with all of their gear.

I roll with a Couple of think tanks bags, one for my shoulder ( holds three master primes) and a Rolling bag ( I'll get the names when land, flying high above the USA right now.). The rolling bag has two epic bodies, a 5d mark 1 ( I already have video covered), some canon lenses, red station (base, cf, 1.8" x 2), and a red 18-50 old school zoom. Plus the laptop and iPad. The shoulder bag fits on the rolling bags pull out handle so I don't have to lug it in the airport ( I lug it enough on guerrilla shoots). Both fit easily in the overhead compartment of just about every plane over 100 seats. And the rolling bag has a set of straps to carry it on your back if you happen to be in the NFL and have a strong enough back.

I thought I posted about this before, but I couldn't find it.

This is my pack that I've used for the last 5 years for various different pieces of gear. I've traveled to China, India, Bali, and Australia with this pack for months on end. Mostly for my DSLR's and 4 lenses. Plus it fits as a carry one quite well. Even better than some Kata's will. In China I've packed my Red One and a Panavision Lens up mountains and other diverse terrain. It was only used in a pinch (when my other cases would be too cumbersome. It definitely pushed the limit of the backpack.

I've done some tests with the Epic and sized it up and I believe the Vertex would work quite well. Even better then the Red did. It's a pretty damn comfortable pack and I lugged 35 pounds up and down a village traversing 1k in elevation for 12 days at 8 thousand feet.

Some pictures from that shoot:

It would work even better with some custom inserts. I will probably do that when I get my Epic.

What I use is the LowePro, CompuTrakker to also fit a 17" BBP, for the Epic camera kits single or Double as in the pic below, and the Think Tank for Lenses and other gear.

Whoo! Sweet!

This gives me a much better idea of size / compactness and how much I could fit in those bags.

Thanks, Ketch!
