  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EVF and LCD at the same time?

Able right now with Bomb EVF.

I think he meant with the Red EVF and a Red LCD. Ideally a Bomb EVF and a Red Touch LCD.

Oh, and on a Red Epic.

You can use two Red displays with Red One right now. I guess you could use two LCD's or two EVF's but I've never tried that- you can certainly use one of each.

The answer I think Jay is after is that you need the as yet unavailable Pro I/O module for Epic to use both a Red EVF and Red LCD simultaneously.

I for one, would like to have two LCD's on Epic for studio use, and an EVF + LCD for outdoor work or anything else where the LCD might get washed out.

two LCD is possible today, although one runs through HDSDI, but i love the two red LCD idea.

Sorry, I suffered from the same imprecise language as the OP and first answer!

Yes ... you can use one Red LCD and one HD-SDI LCD ... but you can't use two Red displays on Epic yet.

This is a major bummer because I HATE giving up the touch screen when I need an EVF.

One solution is to use a low end EVF, like the Red Rock or some such, then you can keep your Red Touch LCD. The image isn't nearly as good as the RED EVF, but I'm usually just judging framing anyway.

I'm wondering what would happen if you had two touch LCD's on the Epic? Can it accept input from both simultaneously? Will it ignore one user? This could actually be a prickly problem.

I'd suggest making the AC's touch have priority over the operator. So, if both users try to use the touch interface the operators input is ignored until the AC is done.

I don't think you can use the interface while rolling, but it would be nice for the AC to be able to go pixel to pixel on their display while rolling without affecting the operator's display.

Can we use TouchScreen LCD Epic and RED EVF at the same time without using Bomb EVF ?

Its kinda frustrating its the 1 thing i have never understood about epic, as i really would like to have the touchscreen for my AC and use the bomb evf for operating, but attaching the pro I\O module just to get the second output seems excessive, since i love how compact the whole design is. i guess i feel like the extra size addition is somewhat inhibiting compared to simply using a 3rd party monitor/evf.

So i am in the line to get a 3rd party evf or even a SmallHD monitor instead of buying the bomb evf. its a shame as those two seem like the perfect match.

surely it would have been smarter for sales to include of their 2 Lemo ports on the brain like on R1, maybe even leaving hdmi for the pro I/O module, so it pays to stay RED with monitoring. i mean, most people do use the 7" and the red evf with R1 because its an easily accessible good quality choice.

I will still get the pro i/O module, but its a slight shame to have it attached just for the native brad evf. But maybe most people just aren't interested in this monitoring configuration.

My Epic M arrives on Tuesday, so I just read the manual for the first time. I was perplexed (ie. disappointed) to read that I can't use both of these at the same time. I'd hate to have to add a Pro I/O module, along with a larger battery module, just to make these two AKS work, and end up with a camera that's twice these size of the brain. Hopefully there is a simple cable/breakout box/pass-through solution...

There is only one port on the Epic brain, so there is no way to physically connect two devices. Soon enough the Pro I/O will give us what we want.

For now you simply use an EVF or Red LCD for operator and a HDSDI Monitor for AC and you dont have to add the Pro I/O

I don't have my bomb EVFs yet but I use TVlogic 5" HDSDI LCD for operating and the AC uses the 5" touchscreen. We loop out of the TVlogic or just split from the HD-SDI out of the camera to village.

On Epic you can use BOMB EVF and Logic TV 5.6" LCD (HDMI or HD-SDI) together.

But if you like new touchscreen RED LCD then if you need EVF you can use new Zacuto EVF (has also HDMI loop) that you can attach

something like an Atomos Ninja with SSD or AJA KiPro Mini with CF card ProRes instant dailies recording.

With that EPIC combo rig you can have a small system that can have EVF and LCD at the same time and also can do high R3D and low HD recording at the same time.

Oh boy...im only aware of this now. So it is not possible to attach EVF and LCD at the same time unless we have the pro module which is HD-SDI only (maybe no lemo port). Well...i need to prepare myself to see if there is other surprises.

Does RED decided to use such way because of complaint from some red owners in the past ? I remember some people is not happy due to the fact that red lcd cannot do HD-SDI input and have to stay strictly at RED port for the LCD without using HDMI
