  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

best way to mount evf on epic?

Check out this thread:

http://reduser.net/forum/showthread...F-mount...So-is-my-Custom-CLUTCH-Shoulder-rig!!

The trick is to find a way to get the EVF lower than the Top Mount.

The Spinner EVF Mount should work out great once Brook / VFS ship the side rails.

Yup, EVF spinner mount plus adjustable top mount will be one of the best solutions (see image). But that is the beauty of Matt's accessories - a lot of options. People are running with this, for example, with the Accessory Attachment Bracket:
* Put this on top of camera: DSMC Top Mount (Rod Compatible)
* Put rod in it
* Attach this to rod: Rod-to-Rosette Bracket
* Attach any number of dogbones (Dogbone A, Dogbone B, Dogbone C)
* Attached to end of a dogbone: Accessory Attachment Bracket
* Mount EVF

I'm sold on the spinner. May I please give you my money now? :patriot:

Gee, Brent, that seems like an awful lot of stuff to get the job done. And with it, a lot of extra weight.

I think I understand how that would all work, but it still doesn't seem to give me the ability to quickly re-position the EVF that I get from the ET device. Or rather, it seems to allow for quick re-positioning only along the axis of the SWAT rail. (I may well have that wrong.) Does the guide clamp on the Spinner fit the ET L-bracket? Or does Matt have a similar thing on his list? That would be sweet. It would save a lot of weight and complexity.

...funny you should ask that. I was planning on attaching the swat rail to a rod since we know it fits and I doubt ET will sell you that part separately.

EDIT: Looks like at one point Ketch was able to buy the L bracket by itself so hey, maybe it's possible.

I thought I should mention that Wooden Camera is producing a small and lightweight Universal EVF Mount. It will be finished in two weeks and accept an original Red EVF, Bomb, Zacuto, Cineroid, or any other LCD monitor within a certain weight range. It is a functional blend of many existing concepts and will be very affordable and configurable to many shooting styles.

That sounds like an option worth waiting to see.

I have to say that I love the flexibility and configurability of the Red aks, but for a few things, it seems to me that a really specific, great design is worth paying for. I think EVF mounting is one of those things. Look at the difference between the Zacuto EVF mount and the ET mount. They get you to a very similar place, and the Zacuto take on it is cheaper, but the ET design is far quicker to use. It's just a more elegant design. But of course, its parts don't work for anything else.

I know ill probably be laughed out of the room for this, but the Bomb is so lightweight that Im finding a single manfrotto hydrostatic arm works just fine.

Just saying there are options. Like I mentioned, we think the Adjustable Top Mount in combination with the spinner is a great solution. Two parts...

Got it. Yeah, that's the best I've seen so far, though Greg's swat rail rig looks interesting too. Do you miss the ability to adjust the height of the EVF? It seems like adjustment front-to-back or side-to-side works, but vertical seems harder to get. Maybe that's less important with the form factor of the Bomb?

I think it is very important for handheld.

With all due respect and no offense intended, this picture of Ketch really shows how important height adjustment is. Why would you want to look straight up to see into your EVF? (He seems happy though :) ) But seriously, imagine how far back he'd have to cock his head to angle the lens toward the ceiling with this setup...

I've got to agree with both Jonathan and Curran. Being able to put the EVF in the right spot and then lock it in place to me is critical. Handheld particularly, I use the subtle pressure between the eyepiece and my eye as a sort of third brace, and when shooting I am always looking out of my free-eye to look for hidden opportunities. To to that requires a nice comfortable eyeline that matches the EVF angle.

So far, I've seen several very cool configurations, but I haven't seen the perfect configuration for me. I like the spinner, but it really needs some form of a movable rail to attach to so it can move fore-aft on the rail, angle up-down on the spinner, and then with the mystery piece I haven't seen yet, move left-right and up-down. Has anybody worked something like that out with the erector-set assembly of parts that Brent is coming out with?

It really shouldn't be something that is ungainly large and heavy. Need an elegant solution.

EDIT: by EVF in this post, I am referring to the Bomb EVF on Epic.

A simple U bracket that bolted to the bottom of the bomb to provide 1/4" threads on the top would be a nice simple option too. Then yes a Hydro arm off that would give some flexibility.

Ketch ALWAYS looks happy. Smiling all the way to the physio tho in that pic :001_smile:
