If you are thinking of upgrading to 10.6.8 and would like to use Premiere Pro and Davinci Resolve or any CUDA enabled app please don't. NVIDiA has released a new 10.6.8 driver for the Quadro 4000 card but the CUDA driver is what's broken under 10.6.8 not the GPU driver. NVIDIA is aware of the problem and they are working on it. Hopefully we'll have a solution soon.

Update (temporary solution):
"Here's a direct link to the March driver: http://www.nvidia.com/object/quadro-macosx-256.01.00f03v7-driver.html

If you need to roll back, you have to manually install each package as the installer will say "No Driver Update Needed" ... Here's how:

1. Open the package in Finder (right click and "Show Package Contents")
2. There will be 3 packages inside, Display, Driver and Opengl, install each of them reboot.

Visit the Nvidia thread http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=203839 for more info. I'd also like to encourage anyone who sees a similar performance hit to post their findings both here at Adobe and on Nvidia's site. I'd test more, got to get back to real work for now. Hope this helps everyone out so we can all get back up and running. - BC" --- http://forums.adobe.com/message/3765129#3765129

Brice,

Unfortunately I found this out the hard way. Had a Digital Cinema meet up today and couldn't give a good demo of Premiere Pro CS5.5. Luckily was able to work around it... but it would have been better if I wasn't on the cutting edge of software updates. Sometimes I have to restrain the geek in me. Hopefully they solve the issue soon. I guess I should post the same thing n the Resolve forum.

;-) You can always try FCP or FCPX.
Sorry but I had to write it. I know you are a big fan of Adobe Premiere Pro. I've seen many posts of you telling people to use PP.

I hope the problem will be soon fixed.

I do have both FCP7 and FCPX installed on my system and I'm learning FCPX. I prefer to use Premiere Pro CS5.5 because it best supports my red centric workflow. Unfortunately I can't use FCPX for anything right now other than trying to learn the interface. I also chose not to waste hours of my day transcoding footage for FCP7 that Premiere Pro CS5.5 can import immediately. FCPX on the other hand does not support my Blackmagic Decklink Extreme 3D+ and hence no way for me to preview a broadcast signal on a color calibrated monitor. I also can't natively load any red clips into it. I do like the speed and coloring tools... but it's an isolated island that is very hard to reach.

Nvidia drops the ball again

Wow. These Nvidia guys should have posted something at least
i.e. "Don't do 10.6.8", but they failed again to be on top of things.
Very strange.

You're assuming Apple gave them some advance notice!

Did Apple do this on purpose to try and put Adobe in a bad place?
Because they can see how many are moving over to Adobe Premiere 5.5, it looks like an easy code to just destroy parts of the support for Adobe and make them look like a "no-go" on a mac.

I smell corporate warfare and Apple shooting their own foot again.
Would love some insider to spill the beans on this thing, would become a nice little fleshy story on top of this FCPX shit.

Apple never tells anyone anything, so it's impossible for other companies to be on top of things before it's too late. Apple do what they want and I have never been a fan of having my reliable system on a mac. I love their phone and pad and macbook air, but seriously, their way of things can screw up your company.

Yeah it's kind of strange. Especially with NVidia releasing the Quadro 4000 driver for 10.6.8. Hopefully it's nothing that nefarious and we have a quick update soon.

Not the first time with the Quadro 4000. My first jump was too early and had nothing but problems. I was told that I got my card way earlier than the fix that wasnt there yet :P
Thanks Andrae for the heads-up.
Oh and as far as your "but it's an isolated island that is very hard to reach", would you say that your in "Lost" islands?
LOL! sorry had to get that in there :)

Luckily I can still navigate by the stars back to mainland... which is now called Premiere Pro CS5.5. The exotic island comes with a real bad cannibalistic side.

I always keep a practice of never updating my OS, unless it's been out and qualified for at least 2 months or so. ever since the 10.6.7 update broke the nvidia drivers and they needed to release a new one that required you to remove you card and put it back in, i swore to myself i'd always wait a few months on updates. granted latest version offered more "stability" for FCPX, but with OS Lion around the corner, i see little point in breaking the system now.

the next worry is how much lion is gonna break the system, and how long it's gonna take for everything to work right. Reminds me of the snow leopard days desperately looking for a esata card that worked...

The debacle with the Quadro 4000 to me was more problematic than installing FCPX.
Reason is that FCPX was purchased for testing (for future) and not as everyday use.
The Quadro problem when it first came out was brutal.
I couldnt even open my computer.
I had to swap cards in order to see if it was the drivers or the computer causing the problem.
Eventually PNY send me a driver that made things work temp.
Now after two updates (not 10.6.8) Its been somewhat stable.
Only problems occur are switching from two MacPro using Gefen DualLink DVI (running dual 30's).
Have to boot up the Quadro MP first and switched (Gefen) before toggling to other MP.

The Cuda on 10.6.8 with MacBook Pro is working. It seems to be affecting certain GPUs.

apple has been such severe fail as of late. new mac pros better make my eyes explode from their sockets...
Haha Ive been around since the first PowerMacs PPC, you know the drill...strap on your belt, your in for a roller coaster ride of your life ;)

When I heard the new that FCPX was in development and that it would be awesome I kinda figured it would be the time for me to change into a Mac workflow.
Then it came out and I realized it was shit so I gave up on that idea. But I still think of switching to a Mac hardware base for Avid and Premiere Pro...

Now I'm not so sure again... maybe I should stick with my PC workflow, at least it never failed me.
