  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Vincent Laforet on the future of Still Photography...again. :)

Very interesting article. Thanks for posting it.

Laforet has a lot of followers, he's really helping educate (and shock) the photo-rati as well as the budding DSLR cineasts. I'm sure a lot of pure still-ers are shocked to hear that Weber, Liebovitz et al. are now using this camera - for photoshoots. That's reason #432 why Jannard is right about resolution being important.

All you Epic owners, get out those production contracts and add in a clause about paying for any stills pulled from your footage by the client! Vincent might have just paid some bills for you there.

I can really see Epic and the larger format cameras really changing wildlife still photography. Being able to not worry if your a frame or two off and just pull the exact image you were looking for from the motion sequence would be a huge bonus. I know for landscape still images the 617 is going to be great for me.

I get it that he wants to shoot video to capture the decisive moment for a still.
But a lot of talk about pulling stills from video seems strange to me - maybe someone can explain?
Because pulling frames from something shot as a moving image would seem to be a very different thing to
shooting video with intent to use as a still. ie 180 degree shutter angle and motion blur would be chosen
very differently for each.

Just depends on the shot; obviously shots with a lot of motion shot at 24 won't work too well. But stills could be pulled from a lot of shots more practically than from film or video, and at a higher resolution.

That's a good point Steve!

I can definitely relate to the part about carrying around the Epic in a backpack. I keep my entire camera 100% built, including the battery, inside my backpack, along with mattebox, fliters, spare batteries and one spare zoom lens. I can carry it straight up the side of a mountain. And the quality blows S35mm film out of the water. With a good lens, it's like carrying a 65mm film camera in a backpack! It must be, what, 1/10th the size of a 65mm film rig? Not to mention that it shoots endlessly to SSD cards, instead of massive and expensive 65mm film reels, and I can process the process at my house on a $3500 gaming PC.

One possibility is to use HDRx to have best of both worlds: video at slower shutter and lower ISO, stills with faster shutter and higher ISO...

Nice interview, thanks for sharing... ;)

Well said Tom, and as you have seen when I came over to do our first shoot together on M8, I roll on a Back pack, and very happy, problem is I roll with MP's in it so not so light any more ha ha.
