I just got my new Epic, and I love it... Here is my problem I got the Arri MMB-1 with 143mm back for my Red 17-50mm lens and it clips on great. But at 5k FF I am seeing huge vignetting on the edges, I have to push into almost 25mm to get rid of it. Is there a solution out there for this, I really want a clip on Matte box for this lens. I got the Arri MMB-1 because I thought people said that it covered this lens. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Adam

It'll be difficult to find something perfect because of the 5K resolution and lens selection. The RED mattebox does a great job and is very light weight, but you'll have issues with combining lenses with mattebox choices because not all lenses will cover the 5K area and maybe too wide for certain mattebox selections, you know what I mean?

I haven't had the chance to test out matteboxes myself, I hope you find something worth while, knowing that it all isn't dependent on the mattebox.

That lens will vignette slightly at 5K FF without the matte box. I assume you are saying the matte box makes it vignette more?

If you are looking for another clip on try the Arri LMB-15. No vignetting on my 18mm RPP with this mattebox. Not sure if it will work with the 17-50's front diameter though.

We've had that same issue with the 17-50mm. The lens itself vignettes at both 5KFF and 5K2:1. Is there a list of lenses and if they vignette on the Epic-M. I know we've also had issues with the Angenieux 24-290.

You can get a 143mm back for the LMB5/15 - we have one, and it covers the 17-50 just fine. Still need to check if it vignettes on the Epic, though.

I recently ran into this as well. Using the MMB-1 and the 17-50 zoom. The MMB-1 is fine for the RPPs though on EPIC. I found the 17-50 to vignette pretty much over the range at 5K 2:1. We went with it though as we needed the filters. We'll just be pushing in a bit in post.

Can anyone confirm if this lens (17-50) is suitable for epic?

Really sucks that the MMB-1 doesn't work...

Was hoping to not have to move up to a 6x6 mattebox

I also wanted to get the mbb1, but after reading this, it seems a problem. Did anyone test the O'connor mattebox with a 17-50 on epic, any vignette issues there?

The O-Box vignettes with the 17-50 on Epic up into the low 20s. I think for 5k with that lens you'll need a 6x6 mattebox because the hood is pretty deep. Also the 17-50 vignettes at full frame 5k up to at least 19 or 20. The 18-85 vignettes even a little more than that, according to a post by Jim. Don't know about the 18-50.

Is anyone successfully using a mattebox on the 17-50 & Epic without any vignetting? (More than the vignetting from the lens itself)

How about the new Arri MMB-2? LMB-15?

Adam, have you considered there's nothing to stop you shooting 4.5K or 4K - it was high enough a resolution for all the Red One and Red MX feature films to date.

Personally, I think I'll be shooting a lot of Epic stuff at the slightly lower resolution - solves vignetting problems which gives me the widest choice of fine cine lenses, and cheaper EF-S lenses for personal use, maximises recording times on media, and is still plenty of resolution for 99% of work.

Has anyone pics of how bad the vignetting is when combinging the RPZ 17-50mm with the mmb-1 and/or o-box? I'm intrested in the 17-25mm range.

And is there still vignetting after croping the sides of the FF5K image to a 16:9 ratio?
