I am ready to buy the best rig for the Red family now (Epic, RedMX, Scarlet). But I don't have enough information to make the good choice.
When you get the products in your hands, it becomes evident. But when you look at the pictures on the website, you can't understand all that you really need. And when you have to deal with long overseas distance and stupid customs people, you prefer to get all what you need in the same time.
- The ET mantis is a gold standard but, you need to buy also a lot of others accessoiries that are not mentionned in the Mantis pack like Arri Dovetail, bridge plate (wich one ?), studio kit (??) and I don't know what other products.
- The Red Clutch seems to be very nice and easier for having a full working solution but it is more expensive and I hope this new line has nothing to do with the first RedOne accessories like the Red handle.

What I need is :
0) Of course, being comfortable and stable
1) To be able to put any Red Camera on it (Epic, RedMX, scralett)
2) To be able to change very easily from shoulder configuration to tripod configuration (so i need some options for the tripod too)

So, to people who tried both ET and Clutch, and RedMX and Epic, what are your advices ?

Best regards,

Olivier

I love the most teh CLUTCH system, but the Shoulder pad does not fit my shoulder at all well, so I am looking for a Pad replacement now, either the
ET Mantis Pad or the Allstar Shoulder Pad, but IMO there is no equals to the modularity and flexibility and choices of mounting options of the RED CLUTCH,
I just am having a problem with the Pad, and with two Movies coming up that I will shoot a good portion of it on Shoulder rig, the Pad needs to fit me perfect!!

Hi Ketch,

What is so different with your anatomy ? ;-)
Do you have some pictures ?

Check this one - works with all camera types and is fast and light:

Actioncam products seem interesting and light. I am trying to be sure of what I need for rapid change between tripod and shoulder.

From my poor understanding, I shall need :
Basic shoulder mount but also 1 bridge plate that stay on the Red or Epic or Scarlett (as many as cameras) and Arri Universal adapter plate (as many as tripod or shoulder), so for 1 tripod and 1 shoulder mount, I need 2 Arri Universal plate.

So here is my budget :
Shoulder mount : 1 032 USD
Universal Arri adapters x 2 : 570 USD
Bridge plate : 630 USD

Am I right ??

Seing the picture again, I am not sure to need the bridge plate.

What don't do Action product, Red, ET and others manufacturers a little youtube video with a poor iphone 4 that could explain how to mount all that mess ?

It is not my anatomy that is that different is thenstate in which my body is that is different form most also suffering form Osteoporosis...:(

Just my 2 cent, how about replacing the foam?! Most foam used in shoulder pads are just bad.
You could replace it with something like Tempur (used in expensive mattresses) it molds around your body while stay stable.

Making a custom shoulder pad could also be a solution, let a metal worker help machine the right curve and choose the foam that suits best.

Yeah..."that mess"...so true !....they seem to do not want to sell anything :)

A simple assembly instructions for a few alternatives would help us so much.

...and would help them to sell their stuff so much also :)

Yeah I tough of it as well, but no time, so I ordered an ET Shoulder Pad with dovetail and will be attaching Clutch components to it to make fit for my needs,
wil post pics in the next few days... ;)

Great I hope it all suits well! And I'm curious at the pictures of the final configuration.

A custom pad might cost a lot and something you can always do in the future.

I'll try to clear this mess:)

We believe the only true camera mounting standard is by using the Arri style dove-plates. So all you need to get from tripod to shoulder are:

1 x Bridge Plate, either ours or any Arri dove plate compatible Bridge plate.
1 x Shoulder mount
1 x Universal Arri adapter plate to go on your tripod (unless your tripod already has the Arri-styl dove plate like Ronford Baker does)

That's it:)

In case you missed, few bits and pieces still coming from RED to make the handle a bit longer and even more configurable, so I ordered few more Dog bones,
oh and still can't find the 140mm Swat rail for lowering the EVF, and will have a custom Foam pice to rep[lace that which comes with the Mantis, but here will be easy to adapt... ;)

He Ketch that is a great rig! I am glad you figured almost all out (accept the evf mount, but i am sure you'll do).
It is good you point out that one rig doesn't fit all, and for health issues important that all is set well and good for the operator.

I love when people create there own stuff, some time for need some time for new solutions.
Thank you for sharing!!
It make me want to get that old tool box out and work on some rig solutions.

He he, yeah I can be very resourceful when I want something really bad, eh he, the EVF pice will come soon to view and will be set, but again, I use most the EVF on Sticks and Dolly shots,
last thing I need is to trip while filming on a Shoulder rig looking thru the EVF, he he.

haha yeah looking up to view through the viewfinder ain't the most practical solution.
As i read you will doing a feature film, you don't whant to end up with trouble in your neck and back.

But in the end it is all part of the art, everything it takes to get that shot.. haha

If you read on, you will read that this pictures didn't need the extra missing piece of Swat Railing, as they were for pictures,
and aI could not find it, when we go out to shoot trust me, I'll have the rig set to be just fine... ;)

Even so most of the time I will use an LCD with shoulder rig and not the EVF, so I can see were I am going... ;)
