I have been focused on Scarlet for three years now, and since then I've been saving for a Scarlet system. Meanwhile I have been dealing with DSLR cameras in docu work and commercials, and I suddenly find myself not only with a lot of saved up money, but with a sudden burst of eagerness towards EPIC. I know that seeing real EPICs out there in the real world pays a heavy toll on many of us who have been patiently waiting for Scarlet: Is this happening to other Scarlet potential buyers or is it just me? EPIC is looking too good to miss

The Epic is becoming more viable an option for me...but I really don't want the Epic-S, either full on Epix-X or stick with Scarlet for me. I don't want (comparatively) limited frame rates in the Epic-S, and I don't have any built up collection of lenses that would require me to get any form of Epic. So it is either stay with the Scarlet (which is still awesome looking) and have extra dough to get some other equipment, or save up all the way for an Epic-X, plus a couple lenses, and all the necessary equipment to have a good starter kit for that. One of these days, I will be shooting with a dream camera...

Yeah, I was thinking of going Epic-S instead of scarlet, but...forget that...the Epic-S cant upgrade to RED DRAGON sensor when it comes out. For the price jump, im not too sure it is worth it. Might as well invest full out in an Epic-X or buy a scarlet for the time being and save up for an epic-x. (probably what will happen for me)

I agree with Chase, it's EPIC-X or Scarlet, I really need the 120 fps. I didn't really plan to spend so much money but time has made me save up more than expected and now I'm thinking: let's go the whole way. I've been buying 35mm glass for my T2i, and knowing that it will fit the Epic-X is tempting. Somehow I can just about see how the camera will pay for itself in over a year...

You can always just go Scarlet, then rent an EPIC-X body when you need to. All the accessories you buy for your Scarlet or Epic-S will work on the EPIC-M. If you can afford an EPIC-X then get it for sure. If getting a fully equipped Epic is going to strain your finances, then get an EPIC-S and/or a Scarlet and a crap load of accessories.

Go big or go home is my philosophy... Get an Epic. However....

If getting a fully equipped Epic is going to strain your finances, then get an EPIC-S and/or a Scarlet

I agree 100% here. Only get an Epic if you can actually afford to do so. (read: don't be irresponsible)

Enh, that's a little easier said than done. I know that is the whole concept, that all of these parts are interchangeable. But that doesn't seem to be 100% the case. Owning Scarlet and moving up to Epic for rentals, you'd not only be renting the Epic itself, there's also the lenses (understandable). But the part that is annoying for me is the fact that you need a separate adaptor plate for the modules between the Scarlet and Epic, as well as what seems to be different risers between Epic and Scarlet. This is just what seems to be the case with what has been released so far, of course it may change or not be the case. But with the old price sheets and info that has been mentioned, I imagine switching between Scarlet and Epic purchases won't be as ideal without spending extra cash...Scarlet and Epic rentals...Epic rentals may include it, so maybe that will be easier...who knows.

I always wondered, if for a "completely interchangeable" system, why the units were even in a different chassis, if the same one would make it more interchangeable. I'm sure they have their reasons, just curious.

I understand this is a strange thread, maybe I'm just curious to know if anybody else is in my position: almost 4 years have passed since I first heard of the EPIC/Scarlets project and since then my career has kind of consolidated: I would love to shoot some of my stuff with a Scarlet, but it seems like a temporary camera next to Epic. The money needed is almost there, just between an "irresponsible" and "bold" attitude.

I'm planning on getting a Scarlet, when it comes out. However, in 3 years time I'm qualifying, so I'll probably switch up to EPIC then.

Scarlet will be a great way to get to grips with the RED workflow.

+ The cost of EPIC goes beyond the camera itself, you'll need a far more powerful workstation to work with EPIC footage compared to SCARLET (I assume).

I understand...what do you reckon is the minimum workstation requirement for Epic footage to run on FCP, Mac wise...

Having never had first hand experience with any RED footage, let alone EPIC footage, I wouldn't be able to tell you. But if you do a bit of searching in the "workflow" sub-forum, there are loads of threads with "minimum requirement" lists.
