  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Vincent Laforet

YES, but I have read Vincent said that EPIC is making too clear picture for him in comparation with ALEXA, that ALEXA make more noise and it is more preferable for Vincent and Vincent estimate Alexa is making more qualitative picture for him then EPIC so it is interesting why Vincent buy EPIC and not ALEXA only because of money?

Yes, I'm sure that Pulitzer-prize winning photographer/videographer/director, Vincent Laforet, has to watch his pennies when he's buying camera equipment :)

Congrats Vincent!! Enjoy! :)

I knew he'd get one ! I can't wait seeing what he's gonna do with his new toy... ! ;)

Congrats Vincent.
Welcome on board...
really appreciate your work keep coming.
cheers

Thanks Luigi - the camera really is something pretty special out there... I had to get approved by admin to post and it took a few days.... sorry for the delay in getting back!

:)

Congrats sir!

I suppose this means we'll be seeing a lot less DSLR video from you then?

Less - sure. But every camera has its place. Once you shoot Epic it's very hard to go back to HDSLR in terms of dynamic range and image quality. But some jobs will require HDSLRs still. There is no perfect camera for every job. The Epic is close though.

Congrats Vincent!!! Really loved all the content and experienced you shared on your blog, and after seeing all your posts about the Epic -- was thinking it was only a matter of time before you got your M. Congrats and can't wait to see what you produce with it ....
I'm looking to make a post at the end of this week... we shot 10 days of footage w/ the Epic and it takes a bit to go through it all ;)

Congrats Vince, It was great shooting with you on our Epic here in NYC.

Looks like you caught the bug too :)

Jason

I definitely caught the bug at NAB when I saw the Epic in person... then when you guys let me play with yours it was game over... you are pretty much definitely partially to blame!

Haha, welcome to the cult, Vince!!
You too are responsible Tom - those clips you've been shooting made it hard to ignore this camera! I'm not sure I'd call it a cult - I'd call it a movement.

It was great seeing you here at the open house tonight, Vincent. Happy that you are enjoying it so...
Same here Joseph - I am definitely enjoying every second of this camera. For those of your waiting - worth every painful second of the wait for sure.

Nice one Vince!!

At list now we don't have to be worried about ours, he he, great seen you, and see you in Italy next... ;)
Thanks Ketch - I think your camera is the first one I ever held in my hands... I owe you a bottle of good (French) wine! Just kidding - I love Italian wine over French any day ;)

You can always add noise in post as someone else said in this post - absolutely true. I think I'm not used to seeing such clear images at such high resolution. It's going to take some getting used to. I must admit I will likely add a bit of noise to my final Epic footage - but that's totally a preference thing. I thought long and hard about the Alexa. But I realized that ultimately I'd need a crew to go with it at this point and at that point I might as well rent it with all of the other gear that would come along with it. It's a fantastic camera. But the Epic is the only camera that I can literally travel around the world with and that I can produce footage that is just draw dropping - all by myself. As a former photojournalist where the one rule was to "always have a camera with you ready to shoot" - going for the Epic was a draw that I just couldn't ignore. The size of this camera when configured w/ a small lens and handle w / EVF - is just spectacular. And then you see the image - and it's game over. Then comes the post - and you wish for a computer system that doesn't exist yet ;) But some RAM and a Redrocket later you are OK again, and buy hard drives like they're going out of style ;)

The goal is to post some footage by the end of this week w/ the Schneiders etc.

Pulitzer prizes don't pay THAT much ;) Money played a maybe 5% role in the decision. The size/weight of the camera played 70% of a role, and the last 25% went to the 5K resolution and what it opens up for post / stabilization etc.

It's easier to add noise or grain to something than remove it.

Sapphire film emulation ?
Yes going to try Sapphire and a few other things I've heard about - you're right. I think Jim gets a little upset when I tell him the image is a bit too clean. In retrospect it's a bit of a silly comment on my part as you can always add grain... removing it is not easy! You have to admit that you've seen few images this clean coming off any camera on any screen...

Congrats Vincent :-)
Can anyone tell me what base plate and top mount and battery attachment is in that picture? I like the look of that set up!

All of the add ons are from Element Technica. They will be releasing the attachment plate/cheese plate / base plate/spacer etc soon. Excellent gear - highly recommend it. The handle is awesome too - but I found it a bit of a tight fit w/ the LCD on there. I don't have a right handle yet so I have to work w/ both the LCD and the EVF for now (I borrowed the EVF from a good friend who posted on this thread;) Thanks man!)

Congrats Vincent.
Welcome on board...
really appreciate your work keep coming.
cheers
Thanks Raphael - things are looking much CLEARER and CLEANER than they once did ;) HDSLRs have their place for sure. But once you shoot Epic footage it's very hard to go back to H.264.
