  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

TOTAL RECALL shoots EPIC

Am glad to know that more Cinematographers can´t get enough of EPIC Buzz, lay down the hat get addict to the Buzz and to It, and Get evolved to The Grand Savior of us (indie or biggie) and Shoot with.... These Guys are "NOT THE GREATEST" but are some Guys to say... "Glad that u relize ealier"... Love F******G EPic...

What are the pixel dimensions and recorded sensor dimensions of 5K ANA?

I'm going to make a wild guess and say something around 3102 x 2585 or 3282 x 2735 pixels?

3296 x 2700 (~8.9mpix)
~17.8mm x 14.6mm

HDRX is really what seperates it from film. The abilty to take a second exposure real time to maintain detail in highlights 6 stops over is something i believe will make a lot of cinematographer thrilled.

*Happy dance*

I can say first hand HDRx is so useful...we shot an interview last week inside The Hyatt in Montreal shooting through ND glass with the Contemporary Art Museum in the background (a very white and bright building) under a sunny sky.

As we only had a Diva kit, Kino Bar Flys and a redhead 1K we were able to properly expose our interview subject inside, but naturally the exterior was blown out...so we switched on HDRx and dialed in 3 stops and whammo! We had a great background for our interview.

Looks great, and this example instantly converted my camera assistants who had not yet worked with the Epic on the spot.

Thanks Jim and everyone else involved with this innovation -it truly rocks.

As I take it through the paces I am finding it possible to render a very tactile filmic look. On this picture I am using Panavision C Series Aanamorphics and going for extreme flares and halation in areas of the frame. The more I deconstuct it the better its looking.

Game on.

Nice ! Jarred, you forgot to post the picture... :)

BTW, any news about the RPP Ana ?

What would be the difference between Hawk V-Lite and Panavision C Series Anamorphics?
Wouldn't Hawk bring more resolution as a bigger part of the sensor would be used ?
Could the Epic be able to desqueeze the 1.3x images of the Hawks?

Yeah for sure, but so what if you get more resolution. The Panavision anamorphics are obviously the look that Paul is going for... I havent compared the Hawk's to the C series myself but I'm told that the Hawks dont give off the charactistic anamorphic flare as much - which is what Paul said he wants.

no plans to support 1.3x anamorphics.

I never really understood the whole 1.3x movement...

I agree with everyone, the extra resolution is going to make Epic + anamorphic truly a visual treat! It's going to be fun next year and 2013 going to all the Epic shot movies .... :)

The 1.3 squeeze Hawk V-Lites are awesome, ALTHOUGH the overall anamorphic feel is significantly less present with the lenses. With less of a compression factor, the anamorphic distortions and focal-length/depth-of-field properties are also correspondingly toned down... STILL it's a great idea... you can turn standard 1.33:1 into 16x9 (think what you could do with BigTV negative in a film camera...) OR you can take a 16x9 aspect ratio and turn that into 2.40:1... This is a great benefit for all of those 16x9 imagers out there... However, the PRICE of those suckers makes the idea almost entirely unusable. No rental house in the states has purchased them since it's such a specialty aspect ratio versus the cost (something like 50K Euro EACH LENS!) Though if you buy a whole set the price would come down SOME...)

I bugged Camtec about getting a set for a few years... didn't happen... BUT, they DID end up buying some standard 2:1 V-Lites and I'm going to be using them next month on a feature I plan to shoot 5K Anamorphic on!

Hey guys the camera tests we did with the Epic and the Panavision C series lenses looks great. After switching from 35mm to EPIC weeks before we started shooting, Paul is getting the hang of setting looks right off set and likes the process and camera a lot.

I think Total Recall is in great hands:

Camera crew on Total Recall is an experienced "A" crew with anamorphic backround, I know that the movie will look like million dollars, or maybe couple hundred millions dollars :)

Let the show begin :)

Well, now we know what RED will release if they do end up releasing an anamorphic lens set. :D
