  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Poor Man's Epic S: RED Scarlet 2/3" with 35mm Adaptor?

I didn't read the entire thread, however I would like to say that I don't think the question should be about a "poor man's EPIC-S". It should be about a poor man's EPIC-X. Remember that the EPIC-S should have about half the horsepower of the EPIC-X. That means that the Scarlet will exceed the EPIC-S's framerates capability.

With that much being said, I think it will come down to how bad the individual wants to do his/her thing. Just because some people think it's not wise to shoot a feature with a DSLR, others are willing to sacrifice image quality and a whole lot more so they can have shallower DOF in a small package (whil,e still more, care not about the size of the rig and build it up to yet another ginormous rig).

May not be ideal, but not everybody cares about the ideal when a few more bucks are in question.

At the same resolution and REDcode settings?

Since we of course know that the Scarlet is not 5K as is the EPIC, I am only referring to the EPIC's abilty at 3K resolution and in this, the Scarlet seems to be proving itself better at 3K than the EPIC-S according to the projected tech specs...

Yup, 3k on the EPIC-S was what I was referring to as well... intriguing... as much as I follow this place you always pick up something new. I always sort of expected the EPIC-S to perform similarly to the Scarlet @ 3k, granted that I didn't have any particular reason to expect that. The specs seem to flow in and out of my brain freely.

No problem. That's why I'm here to help... :)

Just for reference, these are the frame rate specs for EPIC (all shown widescreen except QuadHD and 720P).

5k 2.40 = 120
QuadHD = 120
4k 2.40 = 150
3k 2.40 = 200
2k 2.40 = 300
720P = 360

Frame rates and data rates in combination with project sizes will be the primary compromises in comparison on the EPIC-S with the big brothers (EPIC-X and EPIC-M). You can anticipate about 1/2 the overall data throughput...
Jim

If indeed, everything above is true, the EPIC-S will have about 100fps of 3K.

Everyone is (or should be, at least) aware that the Scarlet has been said to be capable of shooting 120fps of 3K with "possibly bursts up to 150fps".

Heh. I certainly read both of those statements at one point in time, but I didn't put them together like that. Just another potential incentive for me to stick with Scarlet :) Although, on the other hand... I have to admit that my HVX doesn't do anything higher than 60fps and I've been quite happy with that for most, er, lets say very many shots. Which I suppose knowing this place requires some kind of disclaimer stating something to the effect of "given my subject matter and style".

When it comes to the adapter my opinion would take a cot in the "Scarlet Cinema is a better choice than a Fixed w/ adapter" camp.
